Without any siblings, Hensleigh relies a lot on me to be her playmate and entertainer. So a nice relaxing day at the pool quickly turns into an energy-draining episode with multiple recreational activities—bordering on abuse—inflicted upon me for hours. One of her favorites is Dad Surfing: I hold my breath and lie flat on the pool floor for as long as I can while Hens stands on my back and tries to ride the wave as I wiggle and shake to try throwing her off. For a full minute I prepare by breathing very slowly and deeply to coat my lungs in oxygen. Then I hold my breath and prepare for the onslaught of gouging toes, digging heels, and oxygen deprivation. It often times still hurts; I still fight for air; I’d still rather read or write next to the pool. BUT, the preparatory breaths allow me to last longer underwater, to calm my frantic mind, and to tolerate the discomfort in order to accomplish something for Hens. Life is hard. Don’t compare. YOUR life is hard. Prepare your mind, your heart and your body for what lies ahead. When trials arrive—and they will—you want to be ready to act. Pretty crazy to think this photo was taken 6 years and a day ago. @carissa.waitforit.bell & I had been talking long distance for months online and through text at this point and I’ll never forget how nervous I was to finally meet her. I still remember it like it was yesterday and I’ve spent everyday the past six years counting my lucky stars knowing I probably don’t deserve somebody as amazing as her to call my queen. She was a server/manager at a restaraunt and I was just another chubby white kid with a dream of being a rap star. It wasn’t until shortly after that we were living together and I packed up my stuff and moved a province away from home under the same roof she had already been living under and our journey really started. She would put in her hours at her job while I was at home all day making music. That’s the thing about love, they say it makes you do crazy things but I’d rather be crazy together then sane alone. She’s been right beside me holding my hand from the beginning till now. I attribute a ton of my success to her. When I’m falling apart she always finds a way to put me back together and she’s one of the only people in my life that will show me right from wrong instead of being enabling. I just wanted to take a moment and thank this guy right here. It’s been a rough couple of weeks but he has been by my side through all of it. He happily agreed to watching 20+ hours of NCIS. He let me show him the same 200+ of stinker and tell him the same stories without batting an eye. He never judged me and always supported me.
