Physicists Quiet the Quantum Whisper to Improve Gravitational Wave Detector Sensitivity Gravitational wave detectors have opened a new window to the universe by measuring the ripples in spacetime produced by colliding black holes and neutron stars, but they are ultimately limited by quantum fluctuations induced by light reflecting off of mirrors. LSU Ph.D. physics alumnus Jonathan Cripe, postdoctorsl fellow, NIST, and his team of LSU researchers have conducted a new experiment with scientists from Caltech and Thorlabs to explore a way to cancel this quantum backaction and improve detector sensitivity. In a new paper in Physical Review X, the investigators present a method for removing quantum backaction in a simplified system using a mirror the size of a human hair and show the motion of the mirror is reduced in agreement with theoretical predictions. The research was supported by the National Science Foundation. Louisiana State University Ph.D. physics alumnus Jonathan Cripe has conducted a new experiment with scientists from Caltech and Thorlabs to explore a way to improve gravitational wave detectors’ sensitivity. Credit: LSU Despite using 40-kilogram mirrors for detecting passing gravitational waves, quantum fluctuations of light disturb the position of the mirrors when the light is reflected. As gravitational wave detectors continue to grow more sensitive with incremental upgrades, this quantum backaction will become a fundamental limit to the detectors’ sensitivity, hampering their ability to extract astrophysical information from gravitational waves. “We present an experimental testbed for studying and eliminating quantum backaction,” Cripe said. “We perform two measurements of the position of a macroscopic object whose motion is dominated by quantum backaction and show that by making a simple change in the measurement scheme, we can remove the quantum effects from the displacement measurement. 早年聆聽實體專輯有些儀式性的小樂趣：仔細拆開包裝，好奇的品味設計，將卡帶或是CD放進播放器...之後就是專心地把專輯聽完。身為製作人，總是花很多時間編排曲目，就連歌與歌之間的空白時間，都要反覆確認，有些歌要接得緊才暢快，有些歌要多留半秒鐘才有餘韻。和現在聽串流音樂的習慣不同，不會突然被紐約歌手亂入，被冰島創作人攔截（笑） 小時候聽卡帶，因為A/B面長度的關係，有人會在專輯最後藏點什麼東西，「四季末的唱遊」發行當時，卡帶在市場上也差不多即將走入歷史，我在最後一首ft.刺客主唱國國，搖滾曲風的「超速」後面，藏了一首短短的清唱的Hidden track。大概是因為當時音樂做得很快樂，但是宣傳上通告與世界溝通的時光異常痛苦的緣故，曾經有一段很漫長的日子：電台主持人翻著新聞稿自顧自地用輕柔嗓音對麥克風說話，與坐在對面被訪問的我沒有任何眼神接觸的機會，上綜藝節目不會玩遊戲不會搶答與人搭不上話，被執行製作到主持人輪翻嫌棄叨念，帶著一把吉他去校園唱現場被嫌不是對嘴很麻煩，去勞軍場合被滿心期待軍中情人上場的阿兵哥丟水瓶。再想到小時候看過的存在主義小說，卡繆卡夫卡鑽進腦海裡囉唆了幾句，就在錄音室大聲的唱完了這首歌。 為了維持原作品的完整，還是維持原本的時間，並沒有把這首歌拆開收錄，現場專輯也都保持所有的talking沒有刪減。 它沒有歌名，我也不確定究竟有沒有人發現過這首歌，在「趁記憶消失之前」加演場的尾聲，以同樣的樂趣，但是更近的距離，送給現場的朋友...by 公主 《四季末的唱遊》－〈超速〉 Spotify： https://tinyurl.com/y3x8ufrt Apple Music： https://tinyurl.com/y58529kv KKbox： https://tinyurl.com/y3wtdtt9 MyMusic： https://tinyurl.com/y2vzplwf friDay 音樂 ： https://tinyurl.com/yyzzdeqm 📀全專輯數位收聽： https://orcd.co/sandeechan #趁記憶消失之前 - @sandeechan on Instagram

When we came up with the basic idea of a video for a guy “who just can’t go fast enough”, I wasn’t expecting @pukapla (director) and @andyhoffman.x (cinematographer) to actually just drive to Utah and buy a Fiat to film 🥵, but they did and came back with these amazing shots. And super neat watching how they and the very talented crew made the additional studio shots happen here in Oakland. Feelin a little guilty that I chose a turtleneck and leather jacket for Mac’s character, it was pretty hot those 2 days. At a certain point I put on the backup turtleneck and leather jacket ready for action in case something went down. Very happy with how it turned out and thought everyone who worked super hard on it did a great job of matching the mood of the song so thanks again, this was a ton of fun to do with y’all. Repost @fullrange_audiowebzine ・・・ [리뷰]야마하의 고집스러운 순결한 음 만들기 - Yamaha A-S3200 인티앰프 .....(중략) 자문해본다. 디지털과 스트리밍의 시대에 A-S3200 같은 아날로그 입력 전용 인티앰프의 레종데트르는 무엇일까. 더욱이 헤드앰프까지 동원한 MM/MC 포노스테이지를 달고, 베이스와 트레블 톤 컨트롤까지 마련한 이 앰프는 무엇을 지향하는가. 지난해 5000 시지를 들으면서도 느꼈던 것이지만, 그것은 결국 ‘지고지순한 음’을 위해서였다. 이를 위해서는 각종 노이즈를 없애는 일이 급선무이기에 메카니컬 그라운드로 진동노이즈, 플로팅 밸런스 출력단 설계로 접지노이즈를 잡으려 한 것이다. A-S3200은 또한 입력단부터 출력단까지 풀 밸런스로 설계했다. 케이블을 타고 들어오는 커먼모드 노이즈를 처음부터 추방하겠다는 뜻이자 신호의 다이내믹 레인지를 보다 높이겠다는 의지다. 좌우채널이 거울처럼 대칭인 것은 양 채널 신호를 최대한 똑같이 출력함으로써 정교한 음상과 드넓은 사운드스테이지를 얻으으려는 고전적인 수법이다. 여기에 섀시 내부의 황동 플레이트와 황동 풋을 통한 인슐레이팅 효과도 마다하지 않았다. 맞다. A-S3200은 200W, 300W 이런 식의 대출력이나 스트리밍 DAC 같은 요즘 트렌드에는 관심이 없다.
