Según la lista roja de la IUCN (International Union of Conservation of Nature), el estado de conservación del jote de cabeza colorada se encuentra clasificado como una especie de menor riesgo, lo que quiere decir que su población se ha mantenido estable a través del tiempo. A pesar de esto, esta rapaz es considerada una amenaza para algunas personas que viven de la ganadería, ya que se dice que se alimenta de animales recién nacidos y que difunden enfermedades como la peste porcina o el carbuncos. Sin embargo, es todo lo contrario, pues su tracto digestivo tiene ácidos que destruyen estos virus. Lo cierto es que el rol ecológico que esta rapaz cumple dentro de la cadena es tan importante como el resto de las rapaces, ya que es considerado un purificador, esto es debido a su conducta alimenticia basada en consumir animales en descomposición. El jote de cabeza colorada está protegido por diferentes leyes y tratados internacionales alrededor de América, tales como el Tratado de Aves Migratorias de Estados Unidos, país en el cual se puede cobrar una multa de hasta 15.000 USD y cumplir sentencia en prisión de hasta seis meses; la Convención para la protección de Aves Migratorias en Canadá y México, la Convención de Especies Migratorias de Animales Silvestres que ha sido ratificada en 115 países, entre los cuales se incluye Chile. El periodo reproductivo de esta rapaz varía dependiendo de la zona donde se encuentre; en la parte norte de su área de distribución, este periodo inicia a principios de marzo hasta junio, en cambio, al sur del área, éste comienza en septiembre – octubre. En el área norte de distribución suele nidificar en cuevas en los cerros, a diferencia de la zona centro y sur, en la cual la nidificación se encuentra en lugares de abundante vegetación, donde coloca 2 huevos blancos con pequeñas pintas rojas que serán incubados entre treinta y cuarenta días. Para llegar a este punto, el ritual de apareamiento puede constar de dos maneras: primero, realizando vuelos, en los cuales se persiguen o lanzan entre sí, y segundo, siguiendo un cortejo que comienza en el suelo, donde los machos se juntan en círculo, rodeando a una hembra mientras abren sus alas a manera de pavoneo. Los polluelos presentan una condición altricial, es decir, nacen ciegos, sin conductos auditivos abiertos, de movilidad limitada y desnudos. Durante las primeras 10 – 11 semanas los polluelos son alimentados a través de los padres: regurgitando. Estos se mantienen en el nido durante el periodo de alimentación y en caso de verse amenazados por algún suceso externo, se defienden silbando y regurgitando, en cambio, los adultos fingen su muerte, pueden regurgitar sobre su amenaza o, en el peor de los casos, huir del nido. Un flamenco en La Llana Ayer sábado, unas horas antes de la tormenta, fuimos a darnos un baño a la #playadelallana de #salinassanpedro. A pocos metros de la entrada, en la orilla, nos encontramos con un jovencísimo #flamenco, posiblemente nacido hace un par de meses. Un par de chic@s que había junto a él nos contaron que lo habían visto aterrizar en el mar y con mucha dificultad, salir del agua y quedarse desorientado en la playa. Además ya habian contactado con el Centro de Recuperación de Fauna (112 o 968 177 500) y nos quedamos con ellos esperando a que vinieran a recogerlo.Marcamos una línea en la arena y pedimos a las muchas personas que pasaban por la orilla a esa hora, que se alejaran todo lo que pudieran de él. Aunque la mayoría de personas respetaron la distancia, otras se acercaron demasiado, para grabar con sus teléfonos móviles esa extraordinaria presencia. Esto provocó algo de miedo en el animal, que de nuevo se acercó peligrosamente al mar. Estos últimos días de verano es muy habitual ver junto a las orillas de las salinas jóvenes flamencos, mas pequeños y grises que sus compañer@s adultos. No nos tienen miedo, por desgracia eso lo aprenden con el tiempo por culpa del comportamiento de algunos humanos. Pero eso no significa que tengamos que acercarnos a ellos tanto como para invadir su espacio vital, buscando la foto mas cercana. “A wonderful bird is the pelican; his bill can hold more than his belly can,” goes the limerick by Dixon Lanier Merritt. And its true: A pelicans pouch can hold up to three times more than its stomach, according to the @americanbirdconservancy Brown Pelicans are primarily fish-eaters and require up to four pounds of fish a day. They feed by using their keen eyesight to spot underwater prey from the air then plunge-diving from heights of up to 70 feet. The force of their impact stuns small fish, enabling the birds to scoop up the prey in their throat pouches. Air sacs beneath the pelicans skin serve to cushion the impact on the birds and help them pop back to the surface. To drain water from the throat pouch, pelicans tip their heads back; they then swallow the fish. But the pouch is more than a scooping tool: It also serves as a cooling mechanism in hot weather and as a trough for young pelicans, which retrieve food from their parents pouches. Long post alert! Well that’s the 2020 Raptor Fair done and dusted. Organising the fair this year was certainly a challenge, but the feedback suggests that it was worth it. The fair is a collective effort, and i am going to do my best not to forget anyone. As normal the NCBP staff were utterly amazing. On bird staff were Sarah, Jimmy and Ben. We figured out what Ben does here on Saturday evening, but sadly we had forgotten what it was by the morning. These guys did most of the demos and made the weekend run how it was supposed to. The NCBP cafe and shop staff did the entrance gates and the Owl House Cafe. They were, Ben, Caroline, Vicki (my wife), Morwenna, Sarah and Chloe. The NCBP volunteer team, as normal, stepped things up a notch and smashed it. In no particular order they were, Lynn, Nick, Amy, Kieran, Jamie, Owen, Hayley, Davey, Nicole, Abigail and Keith - these lovely people gave up their spare time to do the car parking, empty the bins, sort the BBQ and generally do all the thankless back-room jobs. Thank you, thank you, thank you - you guys rock. Our guest falconers this year were:- Ben Long - falconry grandee and general falconry legend Xavier Morel - widely regarded as the coolest guy in European falconry Nathalie Denolf - widely regarded as being perfect in every way Gary Swainson - the guy who made out that he had a vegan Barn Owl who ate tofu! These guys flew everything from a Bateleur to a white Gyr Falcon. They were funny, educational and generally awe-inspiring to watch. Mark Naguib MRCVS did his normal vet seminar, outside this year to enable social distancing. As expected it was very well attended, as it should be. Alan Walker did a grand job organising the Eagle Group - what an amiable Geordie he is 😀 We were down on stand holders this year - but the ones who came reported record sales and they all did a great job of setting up some fantastic stands selling the best furniture you’ll find anywhere. Guys - I’ll be in touch soon regarding next year. Thank you for coming in challenging circumstances. The Fair can take place because our landlords, Jake and Raffa Duncombe. Bezenderde Zwinooievaar Cora bereikt als eerste Afrika! 🥳 Cora heeft maar liefst zon 2000km afgelegd in een tweetal weken. Door de details die we via de zender doorkrijgen kunnen we zien dat ze er maar 20 minuten over deed om de Straat van Gibraltar over te steken, en dit op een hoogte van 1 km. #RAPACES_CHILENAS ¡La semana del jote de cabeza negra ha iniciado! Planeando en los cielos, imponente, se encuentra el cathartiforme más pequeño de nuestro país... Gregario, se alimenta de carroña y en ocasiones también de animales moribundos, los cuales encuentra volando en círculos y utilizando su visión, a diferencia del jote de cabeza colorada, que emplea el sentido olfato. Posee un vuelo característico, en el que intercala planeos con las alas horizontales y seis o siete aleteos fuertes. El jote de cabeza negra se distribuye desde el extremo norte del país hasta Aysén. Generalmente se le ve volando en pareja o en grupos dispersos, y es común que se encuentren acompañados de tiuques y caranchos a la hora de alimentarse, quienes aprovechan la comida y la protección de las bandadas de jotes. Debemos proteger a esta grandiosa ave rapaz, que limpia nuestro planeta de cuerpos de animales en descomposición, pues sin ella podrían acumularse y propagar enfermedades, lo que habla de la importancia de su rol ecológico.
