The Visual Arts Fund Community Relief Grant program will offer $10,000 grants to 10 artist-organized projects that serve artists and communities in North Minneapolis and areas of South Minneapolis and St. Paul. Apply online now via link in bio. • Sparked by the murder of George Floyd, the world joined Minneapolis in an unprecedented reckoning with centuries of systemic and structural racism. In the midst of peaceful protests, destruction of property, violent police response, and an ongoing pandemic, people across the globe are watching Twin Cities artists respond to racial injustice through their artwork. Many have painted now-iconic murals on boarded-up windows; others are volunteering, organizing relief efforts, advocating for their communities, and taking action to advance difficult conversations while developing new work and seeking opportunities to further their artistic practices. Much of the artistic labor of artists of color, and Black and Indigenous artists in particular, often goes uncompensated. This disparity, paired with the tremendous economic losses the pandemic has inflicted on freelancers and artists with day jobs, has created unprecedented stress and uncertainty within the arts community. • In response, @midwayart has secured an additional $100,000 in funding from the @warholfoundation, which will be made available as $10,000 Visual Arts Fund Community Relief Grants for artist-organized projects. In early May, the Visual Arts Fund awarded Emergency Relief Grants to 60 Twin Cities artists suffering economic losses due to the Covid-19 pandemic and shutdown; this new round of funding will add to that earlier relief effort. Grants will support artist-organized projects within the neighborhoods most impacted by the recent unrest, where communities are advocating for change. • Project proposals must name two Co-Lead Organizers who live within Hennepin and Ramsey counties; priority will be given to projects with Black, Indigenous, and POC Lead Organizers living and working within the eligible neighborhoods. • Applications are due Saturday, August 1st. BEEF EDUCATION. Not much needs to be said about the Tomahawk Ribeye. To me the beauty of this cut is you get to experience so many different muscles. . . Longissimus dorsi is the eye of the steak. This muscle runs all the way down the back of the animal making up majority of the rib and strip. Often called back strap when fabricating venison. Always a tender cut! . . The spinalis is the crown of the ribeye. Most meat scientist will refer to this as THE cut! Packed with tremendous flavor but needs to be cooked to a medium degree of doneness otherwise it can be chewy. . . Complexus is one that is usually not talked about but one of my favorites. Similar to a teres major in tenderness. This is my go to #scoobysnack when grilling! . . Costarum and intercostales (rib fingers) typically get left on the bone. If you haven’t had beef back ribs you NEED to try them! ( @ashleybreneman has an incredible sticky beef rib recipe! ) This is the best way to finish an incredible steak... nibbling off the bone! Created a cartoon self, embodying an essence of the few things I love which is to move, short hair, drawing and cartoon I have grown up watching! This is a part of the activity on Caricature your cartoon self. One of my favourite cartoonist is late Sir RK Laxman, one the very thing he mentioned in his book The Tunnel of Time is that cartooning is about exaggeration or distortion while still keeping the essence intact. Wet frizz can also occur when youre applying your styling products and/or air drying (more on that in part 2). 💡 CAUSES OF WET FRIZZ -Dry hair from improperly moisturizing it -Heat or chemical damage -Breakage that causes shorter hairs throughout -Tangles cause webbing and frizz -Buildup prevents moisture from absorbing and causes a sticky feeling -High porosity hair has a raised cuticle layer that acts like velcro, is dull, and tangles easily -Low porosity hair struggles to absorb moisture due to its tightly bound cuticle -Imbalanced pH. Harsh shampoos are alkaline and raise our pH. -Imbalanced protein & moisture. Too much protein usually will lead to wet frizz because the hair becomes brittle, sticky, and dry. Too much moisture can also cause a mushy feeling and wet frizz. 💡 SOLUTIONS FOR WET FRIZZ -Avoid harsh sulfates on a regular basis that raise the pH and cuticle -Clarify using a sulfate-free shampoo -Deep condition weekly. Use a heated cap if you have low porosity hair. -Avoid using oils on dry hair. Oils only help lock in existing moisture but will not properly hydrate the hair. -Use an ACV/water rinse to lower the pH and seal the cuticle. -Use leave-in to provide extra moisture. -Seal with gel to lock in moisture. -Balance protein/moisture. Too much protein? Skip proteins and focus on moisturizing deep conditioner, leave-ins, and creams. Too much moisture? Incorporate protein ingredients in your routine and/or your deep conditioner. -Balance pH. Shampoos are alkaline and raise our pH to remove buildup. Conditioners are acidic so they help lower the pH back to down its natural state, and smooth the cuticle. Sometimes I wish we had gotten a memo about what our everyday mundane lives would potentially look like in 2020. Being physically mentally and emotionally exhausted is something what I thought I would remember 2020 with among other things. WFH with no boundaries, scrolling on social media, tracking the virus, looking at the phone ring while a loved one calls because you had a day full of work call and don’t have the energy to talk, unread and unanswered messages, watching Netflix till it pops the question are you still watching? Amidst it all I think I had gotten so engrossed in just getting through the day that I stopped checking in with myself. I would comfort loved ones about the rising virus numbers but not ask myself how I felt. Maybe I was being oblivious to what my answer would be or maybe I was just scared. But Im glad to have had people by my side who made me see that my day was more than just watching it pass by. I wouldn’t have started checking up on myself if @coachaniketh hadn’t kept checking in with me. At first it seemed difficult but slowly it became a routine. He encouraged for that self talk and dialogue and reminded me to give myself the love I keep trying to give everyone else. As for the art, I’m pretty sure this profound learning of mine would have just been multiple tweets if hadn’t been for art journaling with @molabocha ! Grateful for people I have stumbled upon through this journey called life. Writing this poem took weeks, and it wasnt because I couldnt find the words or because I was out of ideas. Writing this poem broke my heart. To see what is being said about teachers & other professionals in education on the news, in articles, and all over social media, hurts. I am going back to school in September, and I am very anxious about it, especially since I am immune compromised due to the chemotherapy and radiation. It would be nice if, instead of putting us down, calling us names, and belittling us, our President and his supporters would stand in solidarity with educators. I guess a girl can dream.
