On this day in 1934... The SS Morro Castle was a luxury cruise ship from the 1930s that made runs between New York City and Havana, Cuba, and was popular with tourists both young and old. In the early morning hours of Saturday, September 8th, 1934, en route from Havana to New York, the ship caught fire on the coast of the New Jersey shore; a total of 137 passengers and crew members were killed in the fire. First-responders from southern Monmouth County responded to the event and helped rescue survivors from rough seas, and also brought the dead to shore. The still-burning ship eventually beached near the Convention Hall in Asbury Park, and became a major tourist attraction until it was towed away for scrap several months later. The devastating fire aboard the Morro Castle was a catalyst for improved shipboard fire safety. Today, the use of fire retardant materials, automatic fire doors, and ship-wide fire alarms is a direct result of the Morro Castle disaster. The incident also led to greater attention being placed on fire drills and life boat procedures. The first-ever commemorative monument to the ill-fated SS Morro Castle was dedicated by the Asbury Park Historical Society in 2009, the 75th anniversary of the maritime disaster. There is a black marble monument, funded through donations and fundraisers on a grassy strip just south of Convention Hall and is the first-known monument erected to commemorate this important maritime disaster. *original write up from the @aphistoricalsociety website. My pick this week is Shipbreaking #10, Field Proof from Pentimento— a series that was born of a minor disaster, but produced one of my favourite images. I’ve always been interested in looking at other people’s contact sheets and Polaroids; an insight into the photographer’s process and a chance to see how they visually work their way toward the final image. For his field studies for the Shipbreaking series, Edward decided to use Polaroid Type 55, which produces both an instant black and white Polaroid print and a (rather delicate) negative. Despite taking all of the seemingly necessary steps to preserve and protect the film, when the negatives were put into storage after his return from Bangladesh, they became stuck together. No matter what we tried, the film couldn’t be separated without damaging it. Pieces of emulsion peeled off, sticking to the neighbouring sheets, and those field studies took on a whole new life. Out of that misfortune, they became more than a step in the process in the Shipbreaking series. #SubmarineSunday ⚓ On July 31, 1945 USS Bullhead (SS-332) left Fremantle, Australia on her third war patrol. They were headed to the Java Sea to join a wolfpack with USS Capitaine (SS-336) and USS Puffer (SS-268); then, on September 5, they proceeded to Subic Bay to patrol on their own. Bullhead arrived in the area on August 6, but Capitaine did not arrive until August 13. On August 12, Capitaine ordered Bullhead to take position the following day in a scouting line with Capitaine and Puffer. There was no reply and on August 15, Capitaine reported, Have been unable to contact Bullhead by any means since arriving in area.” At the time, the area was fairly crawling with subs—USS Cod (SS-224), USS Chub (SS-329), Capitaine, and Puffer, as well as the British HMS Taciturn and HMS Thorough— it is difficult to point to one Japanese anti-submarine attack as the one which sank Bullhead. However, the most likely one occurred on August 6, 1945, when an enemy army plane attacked with depth charges (when Bullhead was presumably cruising on the surface off the coast of Bali). The pilot claimed two direct hits, and for ten minutes thereafter, there was a great amount of gushing oil and air bubbles rising in the water. Since the position given is very near the Bali coast, it is presumed that the proximity of mountain peaks shortened Bullheads radar range and prevented her from receiving a warning of the planes approach. Bullhead was the 52nd and final American submarine lost during World War II. She was lost with 84 men aboard. May they never be forgotten. Bullhead is credited with sinking four enemy ships (1,800 tons), damaging three ships (1,300 tons). She also rescued three airmen from a downed B-29. 📸 1: USN photo Print of the Bullhead (SS-332). Eternal Patrol: USS POMPANO(SS-181) __________ This year marks 77 years since the disappearance of the Porpoise-class submarine USS POMPANO. It is believed she was lost between the dates of September 17 - October 30, 1943. To this day she remains among the eleven USN submarines whos loses remain a mystery. There are countless threats to a submarine at sea, and it is quite possible some of these mysteries will never be solved. The old POMPANO departed Midway on August 20, 1943, to conduct her 7th war patrol. She was never seen or heard from again. Her destination was the dangerous waters off the Japanese home islands, and she was to remain there until September 27th, at which time she was to return to Midway. Off the islands of Japan dangers were abundant. Low flying aircraft, magnetic mines, patrol craft, or even inconspicuous fishing vessels could spell your demise in an instant. It is believed, at this time, that POMPANO met her end with a Japanese magnetic mine. These mines had over 200lbs of high explosives packed within, enough to breach any pressure hull, causing the victim to go down in less than a minute usually. Another likely cause is a material casualty to the submarine or a system of the submarine. The older Porpoise-class boats were quite worn by 1943...with POMPANOs sister submarine POLLACK(SS-180) being notorious for putting her crew in danger more than the enemy ever did. It is possible something occurred while the submarine was submerged, resulting in a loss of depth control, and with her old riveted hull there would be very little time to save the submarine. This, in my opinion, is just as likley as the mine theory. Considering their proximity to the Japanese coastline, POMPANO wouldve spent her daytime hours submerged, making conservative periscope observations, save being spotted by the enemy. Whatever the cause to her loss, 78 men went with her, on eternal patrol. On the six war patrols prior to her loss POMPANO served her nation well. She was credited post-war by JANAC with five enemy ships, for 21,665 tons. This is half of her claimed score during the war. Again, as mentioned before, take the JANAC scores with a grain of Pacific salt. - @subpac_ww2 on Instagram
