MN wildlife is the best! There is nothing better than dock fishing and Albert (yes, I named it) decides to see what you are up to. I watched them majority of the day swim under the dock and go explore. I didn’t have my camera at those moments. So evening dock fishing session, I brought my camera out, started fishing then when Albert and friend showed up, I grabbed the camera and took some photos. Loons are majestic and it’s true lake like when hearing their call. It is the only puffin native to the Atlantic Ocean; two related species, the tufted puffin and the horned puffin, are found in the northeastern Pacific. It’s hard to fathom just how adorable they are until they’re walking right up to your face 💙 An amazing day on tour with @baskingsharkscotland visiting a sea bird colony where of course these fearless wee puffins stole the show 😍 Here’s some of the cool stuff I learned: puffins (Fratercula arctica - translates to little brother of the north) cram so many sand eels in their beaks without dropping the first ones by using the backwards pointing spines or denticles on their upper jaw to trap prey against with their tongues while they continue hunting. Presumably they maneuver each fish around to their upper jaw with just their tongue each time they catch one... very impressive since they’ve been known to carry more than 60 at a time! These tough wee birds choose a mate at around 3-5 year old & mate for life (30+ years). Their trademark colourful beak is only colored during a few summer breeding months. The rest of the time it’s a duller grey. Their biggest threat is lack of food due to over-fishing. Day 81- Today’s animal is the Puffin. This animal was suggested by @peri.desai. Fact 1) Puffins are one of the few birds that have the ability to hold several small fish in their bills at a time. Their raspy tongues and spiny palates allow them to firm grasp 10 to 12 fish during one foraging trip. Because of this they can bring more food back to their young compared with other seabirds that tend to swallow and regurgitate meals for their chicks. Fact 2) There are currently eight isles around the world named Puffin Island—so named because they all are or once were home to large colonies of puffins. Fact 3) A puffin can fly as fast as 55 mph (89km/h). Atlantic Puffin Probably the easiest to recognise of our many seabirds is the Puffin which is also known as the Sea Clown. These lovely birds spends many months living at sea each year in the Atlantic Ocean before coming ashore in late April for a few months each year to breed. Although these are endangered it is still possible to see them at many locations around Britain where we have internationally important seabird colonies containing many millions of seabirds. On this particular afternoon I was fortunate to find this bird as it was posing nicely for the camera against a very dark background of black coloured rocks just as the sun was setting. The Atlantic Puffin is one of three species of puffins worldwide, indeed I had hoped to be posting images of all three, but due to the current worldwide situation my visit earlier this year to Alaska did not happen, but it is an area that is still very high on my list of places to visit so hopefully in the future I will get the opportunity to find, watch, and photograph both Tufted Puffins and Horned Puffins and then add them on here. But as covid is rising again it’s not going to be in the near future as everyone needs to remain safe in the meantime. - @nigelspencerphoto on Instagram

Two unlikely friends: The guillemot and the puffin! Despite what this picture shows and these different seabird species residing in such close proximity during the breeding season, they have very limited social interactions with each other. Although scientists have found that being near other species actually makes them more social within their own species! The seabirds close proximity also means the same risks are posed to them, such as oil spills and overfishing. A big risk is the overfishing of sand eels as they’re a staple item in a seabirds diet. Fortunately, there are now limits on the fishing of sand eels which have seen seabird populations subsequently improve! Who’s your favourite... the guillemot or the puffin? Leucism is a rare condition resulting in a partial loss of pigmentation to the skin, hair, or in this case, feathers. Despite the loss of countershading camouflage (the black backs of these penguins make it more difficult for predators to spot them from above when they are swimming), this bird has made it to adulthood just fine. Curious Macaroni penguin. . As photogenic as these amazing birds🐧 are, I really haven’t had many good opportunities to photograph them. Reasons... Although they are the worlds most numerous penguin, they tend to nest in locations that are very difficult/remote to visit. I am lucky to visit one location on occasion, the incredible island of South Georgia. However once there, the macaroni colonies are on fairly steep slopes, that are just difficult to visit on foot.(I’ve never visited one). Saying that, what’s your favourite penguin species? . • Atlantic Puffin // Fratercula arctica • A change from the insect posts today - bringing you some Puffin photos from when I visited Hornøya in Norway. I love these little birds. Hornøya is an island uninhabited by humans but filled with thousands of nesting bird species, including Puffins! This is the first time I saw them in real life, and I thought they would be bigger but theyre only around 10 inches tall! Puffins live to be around 20 years old. These birds are adapted to living in the open ocean, they are excellent swimmers and divers as well as fliers. They have a waterproof coating on their feathers to help them manage in the sea, however this makes them particularly vulnerable to oil spills as this removes this coating. In summertime, the beaks of the Puffins enlarge and the colouring of their beaks and feet becomes much brighter in preparation for breeding season. This helps with their potential to be a more attractive mate! Chinstrap penguin 🐧 . Interesting and sad Time article came out a couple days ago shedding light on the drastic decline of the Chinstraps along the Antarctic Peninsula. It’s quite a coincidence(or not at all) that this comes out the week the highest temperature on record was set(18.3C!) nearby where these studies took place. . But in Tristan albatrosses (and other great albatross species) the males attain a whiter plumage quicker than females, so they are generally the paler bird of the pair, unless it is a young male paired with an old female. Our team members on Gough each picked an albatross species to research and we spent the evening discussing the threats they face and cool facts about each of those species. Goodbye Orkney, hello puffins. A small selection of the many over excited photos I took of the few first puffins to come onto mainland Orkney. At the first siting, I saw six on cliffs and somehow managed to take 559 photos. I had to wait til I was in a safer spot off the cliff edge before doing a happy dance. The Atlantic puffin (Fratercula arctica) is a species of sea bird. Fun fact about the Atlantic puffin, it is the only puffin that is found in the Atlantic Ocean. The Atlantic puffin has a very distinct look with a black crown and back, gray cheeks, a white underbelly, and a bright red and black beak with orange legs. They have large, webbed feet, allowing them to easily move through the water. Atlantic puffins don’t experience sexual dimorphism (the male and female of a species having very different looks) although males are slightly larger than females. Their wingspans can range from 47 to 63 centimeters (19 to 25 inches) and they typically stand around 20 centimeters (8 inches) tall. • Atlantic puffins mainly eat fish but they will occasionally eat shrimp, other crustaceans, mollusks, and polychaete worms. The Atlantic puffin hunts for its food by using their wings as paddles and its feet like rudders to propel themselves through the water. Out on the sea, Atlantic puffins are usually by themselves while on land, they are typically found in a colony. Aangekomen op het eiland Inner Farne, direct doorgelopen naar de vuurtoren om mijn 11 maanden oude dochter te voeden. Mijn vrouw zou het eerste uurtje fotograferen, het tweede uur zou voor mij zijn. Bij de vuurtoren aangekomen (als eerste omdat de rest blijft hangen bij de eerste Papegaaiduikers die ze tegenkomen) zag ik deze prachtige groep nog ongestoord op de witte vuurtoren muur zitten. Mijn dochter even neer gezet, op een bankje wat tegen de muur staat geklommen en uit de hand met 500mm F4 een mooie serie kunnen schieten. De achtergrond is een zeemist. 😍 Топорок встречается в самых северных районах Тихого океана. Он селится отдельными парами или небольшими группами на птичьих базарах, устраивая гнезда в расщелинах скал, а иногда и в норах, которые роет в песчаном или галечном грунте.⁣ Днём топорки улетают на кормёжку в море, ночуют в норах и на воде, а по утрам и вечерам общаются между собой – образуют «клубы» из нескольких птиц.
