Today is @lovingday. Loving Day, started by the amazing @kentanabe, recognizes the anniversary of the June 12, 1967 United States Supreme Court decision Loving v. Virginia which struck down all anti-miscegenation laws remaining in sixteen U.S. states. Its crazy to think that just a little over 50 years ago, it was still illegal in parts of the US to marry someone of a different race. It takes people like Richard and Mildred Loving to fight for equality and justice and overturn archaic laws. As Terry ran through the Atlantic provinces in April, May and June of 1980, school was still in session. Despite running an average of 26 miles a day, he was determined to tell his story and explain why he was running to as many people as he could. This meant that there were some very lucky schools who could boast of an in-school visit from Terry Fox! The students were enthralled by him; how he talked with ease about being a cancer survivor, his willingness to show how his artificial leg worked; his sense of humour; his dedication to his run. Donna Jordan has a vivid memory of seeing Terry on May 2 in Corner Brook, NL: “I was 10 years old and had an instant schoolgirl crush on this very handsome young man speaking strange words I’d never heard before; words such as ‘cancer’ and ‘amputation’ and ‘chemotherapy’. He spoke these words without fear. I was convinced he was the coolest boy I’d ever laid eyes on. He allowed us to touch his prosthetic leg and told us how his hair wasn’t curly before the chemo. In return, we sang ‘Thank you God for giving us Terry.’” Today, millions of Canadian students still relate to Terry, his dedication, his try. These Kids right here, were among the first people I met when I hit NYC. I had never encountered young kids who had a complete total commitment to their vision, of who they are in the world. These kids ooze creativity effortlessly. I was on spring break from MSU. I ended up in Patricia Fields on St.Marks, I think Richard gave me a flyer to Andre’s upcoming fashion show and asked me if I wanted to be one of the models. Mind blown! Back at school, I took out a student loan to buy a plane ticket back to NYC. At the show was everyone I’d ever seen in fashion magazines. The night ended at Area. Needless to say I left school and moved to NYC that summer. Mr. Wallace must have had a sale on striped skirts that summer. My mother, Kathleen Macdonald, is on the left. Sadly, the identity of the second woman has been lost in the years since this picture was taken. Neither, however, appears pleased by the other’s fashion choice that day. The photo was likely taken in Wellington Park circa 1915. Mr. Wallace owned a dry goods store located where East and Main Street is currently. There you could choose from an assortment of men’s and women’s wear, as well as bedding and household goods. Upstairs was Toyland— a popular destination for the village’s children. White Americans claimed that the Latino citizens were voting illegally because they were either easily influenced or they were actually Native Americans, who were not legally able to vote. Either way, the Latino vote in the ten years after the Mexican-American War, which had created American citizens out of Mexican people, was being undermined. Worried about the Latino vote, the editor of the Los Angeles Spanish-language newspaper, El Clamor Público, Francisco Ramirez exhorted Latinos to vote in the campaigns of 1857 (see posts on 4/4 and 9/10 to learn more about Ramirez). Ramirez chastised the Spanish-speaking citizens to vote and to vote for their own interests. Engaging with this public discussion of voter fraud, Ramirez suggested to the Latino public that they were failing to participate in elections or they were allowing their votes to be purchased. Yet these claims of widespread voter fraud were often driven by the public belief that Latino voters were impressionable and lacked the ability to think for themselves. By the 1880s, the Latino voting public was being more systematically excluded from voting with new laws across the Southwest. Language skills in English became required across the Southwest and voting rights were diminished along with access to certain jobs and political access. ¿Qué hacía un guardagujas? ¿Y un lañador o un mozo de cuerda? Hoy recordamos oficios del Madrid de antaño gracias al Archivo Regional de la Comunidad de Madrid 👉El ARCM nos permite conocer mejor la historia de nuestra región y parte de nuestro pasado son esas profesiones que se han extinguido o que perduran adaptadas a los nuevos tiempos. 🚋Desde los serenos o los guardagujas, quienes movían manualmente los puntos de empalme de los tranvías para hacer un cambio de vía, hasta los faroleros, que encendían y mantenían las farolas antaño. En el ARCM encontramos fotografías de oficios casi extinguidos, como los tejeros (fabricantes de tejas y ladrillos) o el mozo de cuerda, siempre dispuesto con su cuerda a cargar bultos, paquetes o cualquier mercancía. 🥽Los trabajos artesanales han cambiado en los últimos tiempos. Ahora sería impensable trabajar en las condiciones en las que lo hacían los fundidores de soldaditos de plomo. 💰La venta ambulante era una fuente de ingresos. En el ARCM vemos imágenes de vendedores de pipas o de molinillos de papel. ♻️Tienen una especial presencia los traperos, cuyo oficio dista del homónimo género musical contemporáneo. Se dedicaban a recoger basura a domicilio, la clasificaban, arreglaban y vendían de segunda mano. Pioneros del reciclaje. 🎹Algunas profesiones perviven en la actualidad, aunque cada vez son más difíciles de ver. Dear Cinephiles, Fran Kubelik: Some people take, some people get took. And they know they’re getting took and there’s nothing they can do about it. There’s no denying the sense of gloominess that has overtaken our lives since last March. I’ve made a big point to aerosol it out of my mind as much as possible, but there are days that it just hangs there. A Billy Wilder film has always proven to be the right antidote for any malaise. His comedies in particular, dive into the ennui - his dark vision laced with the right amount of wit and hopefulness to pull you out and restore your faith in human kind. At a very young age, I developed a strong affinity for his romantic comedy “The Apartment” (1960) - and have visited it many times throughout my life. Last night, I was struck by how pertinent it feels to our current state of insecurity - and how this film should become a priority for all of us. Written by Billy Wilder with I.A.L. Diamond as a follow up to their wildly successful “Some Like It Hot” (1959), it tells the story of C.C. “Buddy Boy” Baxter (Lemmon) - an insurance employee for Consolidated Life in New York, who dreams of climbing the corporate ladder. He has agreed to a Mephistophelian deal wherein his apartment is used at night by four of his bosses to carry out extramarital affairs with the understanding that eventually he will get a promotion. Quite symbolically, the elevator that carries the executives to their higher floor is manned by Fran Kubelik (Shirley MacLaine) - and Baxter is smitten by her. She herself is engaged in a murky exchange in hopes of bettering her position in life. She has been having an affair with married man Jeff Sheldrake - who is the personnel director for the company. Unbeknownst of this, Baxter agrees to loan his apartment to Sheldrake to meet with Fran. Baxter’s next door neighbors think of him as a lothario because they hear the non-stop laughter and merriment coming out of his apartment. Ironically he spends most evenings alone wandering the streets. The action is contained within the hardest week for some of us - that which falls between Christmas and New Year’s...
