Scott war ein amerikanischer Bodybuilder, der in den 1970er und 1980er Jahren Mr. America- und Mr. International-Titel gewann. I’ve never shared this picture before and this is why... Me as a young 22 y/o living in Los Angeles, CA - Circa 2012. I had just chopped all of my beautiful but, boring long hair off and bleached it bright blonde, which mostly turned out to look a dreadful orange colour. I was young, painfully thin, lonely and cared too much about what other people thought of me. And this is why I haven’t posted this picture until now. I didn’t like what I saw, I was extremely vulnerable, impressionable and didn’t dare be brave enough to love who I was, even if I wasn’t sure of who that was yet. You can probably see it in my eyes now that I explain this to you, I can. I share these images with you and my story to show that even if things look a certain way from the outside, nothing is ever what it seems. In more ancient millennial news…it’s the 25th anniversary of Hackers next week, so I wrote about the costumes for @garage_magazine and talked to the film’s costume designer (and legendary rock n’ roll stylist) Roger K. Burton @contemporarywardrobe! When Hackers came out, I was a teen coming off the fashion high of one Cher Horowitz, still trying to procure the ideal plaid skirt set, not knowing that I’d soon be trying to convince my mom to let me get my helix pierced like Angelina Jolie’s Hackers character, Kate Libby. Angelina would soon become a style and life icon of mine. (I would even do an informative speech on her in class at some point and bring in my Gia VHS to play a scene.) Her silver armour ring, by Chicago-based jewelry brand Marché Noir, became a sort of holy grail to teen-me, and I ended up getting one (from Hot Topic) and it became one of my signature accessories. (I even wore it to prom with a pink, tulle princess dress and white Doc Martens.) This didn’t make final edits, but I loved Burton’s story about how Angelina’s iconique pixie haircut came to be: According to Burton, Jolie was not 100% on board with doing the movie at first. “I was sent over to actually try and, you know, talk her into it basically,” says Burton. He came over with mood boards and talked about his work on music videos with David Bowie, and she began to warm up to the idea. “It was like a light bulb kind of went off all of a sudden,” says Burton. “She said, ‘Well, obviously, I cant have long hair. Im gonna have to have a really good haircut.” Burton also directed me to this INCREDIBLE Hackers fan site called @hackerscurator. At first I thought it was from the ‘90s, it looks so authentic! The site’s founders, Erik Meredith and Jenn Werkhoven, collect and recreate many of the costumes and props from the movie. Erik made an exact replica of Cereal Killer’s yellow Motorola pager and Jenn even has same kind of rollerblades Angelina uses.
