WHOSE LIST IS THIS? #56 Maxine is a documentary filmmaker, author, and film school professor. Her most recent documentary is a personal and vulnerable examination on living childfree. The vulnerability aspect to the film is in part due to the incredibly ONE SIZE FITS ALL views many cultures have on, well..., everything right?? Maxine’s film “To Kid Or Not To Kid” delves into her story along with tackling how society treats those who make the choice to be childfree (of course, I’m referring to WOMEN; men get to do whatever they want with little judgement). I made a decision to not have biological children for a whole host of complicated reasons (global warming, unbridled capitalism, overpopulation, failing educational and justice institutions, loving the dynamic w/ my partner, etc). Many years ago, I made a list to help me make this choice. As I grew older, I had my eye on adopting but not until I finished grad school, traveled the world, and did some other projects. The stigma around this choice followed me. Despite having been a teacher for twelve years, bringing various children into my home from the shelter, and now being a step-mom, I still receive passive aggressive comments. That’s slowly changing! I mean, there’s MILLIONS of people reproducing beings. 385,000 babies are born every day! Can we chill?! I am so proud of Maxine for creating a film that inspires conversations around this choice. This is just an abbreviated list on why she made the film. * Lists can help to define or redefine. We are on this planet for a ONE-and-only brief time.
