Just a little post to remind everybody that the tiny fraction of my life you see here on socials is just that, a tiny fraction of my life. I’ve been getting a lot of “living the dream” comments lately which is so lovely - and no doubt this year has been incredible for me transitioning to full time surfer - however behind each shot, each YouTube clip, each endorsement deal, free trip or product, and certainly each film, there is generally speaking a whole heap of hard work, anguish, frustration, elation and ego suppression that goes on. I only want to share positive stuff on here, I don’t think it’s a healthy platform to air my dirty laundry or solve personal issues - that’s best kept for in person interactions with people you love. I recently came across something I wrote a few years ago about Mullaghmore borrowing a concept by author Laurence Gonzales which still felt relevant and applicable given the situations we’ve recently faced. He discussed survival and likened the relationship between reason and emotion as the delicate balance between jockey and thoroughbred. Emotion is capable of making powerful physical actions, and cognition (reason and conscious thought) is capable of making fine calculations and abstract distinctions. He explains that reason alone is quite like a jockey without a horse and that the horse can easily overpower the jockey but cannot race without him. I’ve always liked that analogy and feel like it’s helped me appreciate the process and enjoy the internal struggle over the last few years of learning at Mully. For many of us, or at least for myself, navigating the recent turbulence worldwide has largely been a mental battle between reason and emotion; jockey and thoroughbred. It’s a complex but fascinating challenge; and personally a big part of what keeps me surfing Mullaghmore and a large part of my connection to the sea. We had a couple of really nice days towards the end of the winter with a great crew and @dylan_tzen was there this day putting in the hard yards. We lost one of our beautiful lights recently. Brek Reynolds was a wonderful hearted human. He was embracing a path of what I would call “Sharing the Stoke”. Weather giving kind words to someone who in the past he might have snaked on a wave at his local spot. To embracing a young grom I had introduced to him and taking that grom under his wing when I wasn’t around and helping him and introducing him to others. We would always chat about surfing, everything was about him getting better. People were drawn to Brek and for good reason. He had a beautiful big heart. His booming laugh and giant smile(and beard) were unmistakable Brek. If Brek was around you knew it. The last conversations I had were always “Jenks and I are going out again!!” Or “ My brother is coming down we’re heading to SJ, come shoot!” And even this one, “Dude I pulled a backside Mute air and a frontside Ollie today!! On this day in 2012 (Metal Masters 4) and 2018 (the release of @metalallegiance Volume II: Power Drunk Majesty). Two pivotal days in my life. In my opinion, Metal Masters 4 was the best Metal Masters out of the 5. Mainly because it was in my home city, represented what old school NYC metal shows were all about and just flowed with a killer set list and a great week filled with many memories behind the scenes hanging. Who attended this gig? Fast forward 6 years, Metal Masters was no more and enters the second MA record; which really honed in my songwriting, lyrical writing and production skills... that record taught me a lot... more so producing than anything else (ya think producing a record for a band with four or five people is tough? Try a record with like 20 haha - for the second time). Happy birthday to the Boss himself, @springsteen. Bruce was the first person who took a true chance, and entrusted the person in this photograph — an 18-year-old who had been playing drums for four years — to cover for @mightymaxweinberg. His trust and guidance changed my life, and I’m forever grateful. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If I remember correctly, this photo was taken at a freezing cold outdoor soundcheck in Sweden. Before each show on that 2009 tour, Bruce would hand me a list of five songs to learn on the way to soundcheck. I’d run a crash course on learning those songs as quickly as I could. We’d often run through three of them, and likely play one or two during that night’s 30-song setlist. Then onto the next one. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I learned so much about committing oneself completely to music, that year. Lessons I’ll carry with me, always. It’s a thrill to watch Bruce & The E St. Band continue to push forward with #LetterToYou. The inspiration continues. I’ve been laying pretty low lately, and that’s because 2020 has hit me just as hard as all of you. If I started listing the disappointments I’ve faced this year, your heart would crumble like a hotel-lobby Biscotti. But according to my Facebook memories, I quit my job to pursue @copenotes full-time 2 years ago today. In honor of this anniversary, here are 3 naive assumptions that led me to take the leap: 1. I will start making salary any day now (lol) 2. Other people will care about this as much as I do (lol) 3. The world is probably not on the brink of total economic collapse (LOL) Everyone warned me about how hard it would be, but I figured, “I’ve survived abuse, suicide, and more diagnoses than you have hairs on your head… I think I’ll be alright.” In truth, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. The past 730 days have been a tornado of blood, sweat, tears, and the kind of “prayers” that sound less like asking God to help and more like complaining that he hasn’t. But can you identify the missing ingredient in this hellish cocktail? Regret. 2020 has taught us that there is no safe bet. Just look at the unemployment numbers: The straight-laced office worker and the pie-in-the-sky visionary are equally vulnerable to the winds of change. While now may feel like the worst time to try something new, consider this: There will never be a convenient time to take a risk. That’s what makes it a risk. Эти виды спорта в последние годы находятся на самом пике популярности: все больше и больше людей начинают ими заниматься, все они вошли в список Олимпийских видов спорта. Я уверен, что среди вас очень много людей, кто хоть раз пробовал покататься на доске по воде. И вы все точно знаете, что этими видами спорта можно заниматься и в России. Уже во всю работают школы серфинга в Калининграде, Питере, на Камчатке. Везде, где есть волны и ветер, в хороший прогноз можно встретить не одного случайно затерявшегося человека в воде, а целую толпу народа, которая получает удовольствие от того, что они ловят наши волны, в наших, зачастую холодных водах. ⠀ Но есть одна большая проблема и у неё есть конкретное имя - @aeroflot Являясь нашим национальным перевозчиком, имея лучший самолетный парк, классный аэропорт Шереметьево, кучу наград, эта авиакомпания не просто мешает развитию этих видов спорта в России, она их убивает. ⠀ Допустим, вдруг вы решили взять серф/виндсерф/кайт и отправиться в Сочи/Камчатку/Калининград. За второе место багажа вам придется заплатить 3000 рублей и это вполне ок. Но поскольку это сумка будет большая, то за ее размер дополнительно нужно оплатить еще 6000 рублей. А если, вдруг, это виндферв, то комплект весит более 23 кг и накинут ещё 3000. Итого, слетать куда-то с виндсерфом стоит 12 тысяч рублей в один конец😱 С серфом можно уложится в 9. Билет в Сочи стоит от 7К туда обратно, на Камчатку плоский тариф 22 туда обратно. Получается перевести оборудование стоит дороже самого билета. Всё, на этом ваше желание брать инвентарь с собой сразу отпадает. Но вот если вы летите по одному из 8 зарубежных направлений (Бали, Мальдивы, Каир, Тель-Авив итп), то серф автоматически идет бесплатно. Это классно, спасибо вам за прекрасное Бали, но не думаю, что такие тарифы по России приносят большую выручку. ⠀ Давайте мы попробуем вместе что-то поменять. Прошло 5 недель с момента, когда я сделал пост с криком души «Ворваться бы сейчас в океан» - и моя мечта сбылась, причем сразу по нескольким пунктам - Посерфить на океане, а то уже пол года после Шри-Ланки прошло - Посерфить на Тихом океане, т.к. никогда там не был - Слетать на Камчатку Спасибо @sheinaolga за эту поездку! 🤙🏄♂️🥳⠀ ⠀ Теперь я знаю, где в России можно нормально покататься на волнах, а не вот это все. Камчатка суровый край, что погода, что дороги, что некоторые персонажи. Но если ехать компанией, то любые походные условия вполне сносны, особенно если кроме хороших волн - все остально не так уже и важно. Я обязательно сюда вернусь, т.к. я не поднялся ни на один вулкан и не увидел касаток, зато накатался в сласть и зарядился на ближайшие несколько месяцев. The other day, Jeff from Start Today zine sent me this photo. It’s from New Age 30, during A Chorus Of Disapproval’s set. Isaac just handed me the mic unexpectedly, and I jumped on stage to start singing “replacement” • But here’s the thing that I’ve never told anyone, and nobody has ever called me out for. The band wasn’t playing “replacement”, like I had thought and hoped. They were playing “addiction to disease”. They start off kind of similar I guess, and since Isaac hadn’t warned me ahead of time, it kinda just happened. The whole thing is on Hate5six if you want to see for yourself. • I don’t feel bad about messing up the lyrics for half the song. I felt dumb for a minute, but I take comfort in the fact that nobody had noticed which means maybe I was surrounded by a bunch of poseurs. Or just a bunch of kids having fun. Maybe both. It doesn’t matter now. • I miss hardcore shows. I miss my friends. I miss live music. I was talking to @efbystereo recently and he said something like, “how lucky are we that we got to grow up moshing and stage diving???”.
