A recent paper published in the scientific journal Zootaxa and led by two members of the Atelopus Survival Initiative describes this red-and-green jewel of the forest. But we are already at risk of losing them: habitat destruction and a deadly infectious disease called chytridiomycosis—which was detected on these toads—threaten its survival. Researchers and members of the Atelopus Survival Initiative are working closely to develop and implement conservation strategies for these jewels of the Neotropics. In 1995, Benki and the Ashaninka people decided to protect the turtle population. With help of institutions, they were able to collect eggs and allow for the species to grow. The project allowed for the breeding of 15,000 turtles that were later released into the Amonia river. Today, Benki Piyãko continues this work through the @yorenka.tasorentsi Institute. Wildlife conservation includes the preservation of alligators, turtles, tapirs and much more.
