GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN #24 N E Brotchie Pharmacy 21 Keys Street, Beaumaris Beaumaris’s enviable legacy of mid-century buildings is not just all about houses… there were churches, school buildings, banks, public halls… and Norm Brotchie’s chemist shop in Keys Road. The son of a pharmacist, Norm’s career arc was firmly predestined. Qualifying as a chemist in the early 1950s, we went soon had designs on a pharmacy of his very own. He eyed a potential location far south across the river, down Beaumaris way. Keys Street had already burgeoned as a local retail hotspot by the mid-1950s, when Norm Brotchie engaged Peter McIntyre to design stylish new premises at No 21. The young architect rose effortlessly to the occasion with that you see before you: a simple edifice with recessed window-wall giving way to an interior with fantastically futuristic furniture and an eye-popping ceramic mural of overscaled pharmaceutical paraphernalia. Norm Brotchie’s Keys Street pharmacy remained a hallowed local dispensary for years and years… it was still running in the 1970s, after Norm opened a second outlet on the East Concourse. While the original shop was later converted into a medical centre, the mural was at least partly preserved and remained a nifty snippet of mid-century public art until its regretful obliteration in 2007. My typewriter piece selected for the @tatecollective long list! Typewriter art is the act of drawing with letters and symbols- the foundation of our language and communication- to preserve an artform, machine and technique in a modern world which has forgotten it. A piece inspired by Sheba Chhachhi’s portrait of writer and publisher Urvashi Butalia as a part of the Seven Lives and a Dream series, is naturally suited to a technique born from writing. In our fight for gender equality we have used language as our tool. The typewriters include sections from monumental open letters written by women (Leyla Güven, Indira Jaising, Vasudha Dhagamwar) while the TV plays homage to the protests of the 1972 Mathura rape case. Our women, and other words throughout, are omitted with ? and – as they are still taboo, misunderstood and underrepresented. Scope included new Kawneer Company, Inc. 1600UT ultra-thermal performing curtainwalls glazed with Viracons VE24-85 high performance laminated insulating glass, Reynobond composite panel canopy fascia and column covers, Boon Edam USA crystal all glass revolving doors, C.R. Laurence Co., Inc. balanced door entrances, glass guardrails and a custom, 120 foot long, suspended glass canopy. Last week we shared the interior of 383 George Street, here is what it would have looked like from the street around that time. The lion featured on the receipts also hung above the entrance to the store! . This section of the street was built for Thomas Bradburn around 1860 and was likely designed by John H. Selkirk from Buffalo, New York. . Next door to Fair’s was the H. LeBrun and Co. menswear store at 381 George Street. LeBrun’s was established in 1873 and later occupied the spaces beside the Bank of Toronto on both George Street and Hunter Street from the early 1900s until the late 1920s. On September 27, 1804, Anna McNeill Whistler was born in Wilmington. McNeill was made famous in the renowned painting, “Arrangement in Grey and Black: The Artist’s Mother,” commonly known as “Whistler’s Mother.” Shortly after her birth, Anna McNeill moved with her family to New York. In 1831, she married George Washington Whistler, a close friend of her brother. After growing up in the U.S. and Russia, attending West Point for a brief time and then moving to Paris to study art, the Whistlers’ son James began to split his time between Paris and London. He continued to develop his craft, becoming an important figure in contemporary art circles and generating controversy for his greater focus on color and arrangement than on realism. Anna Whistler moved to London in 1863 to live with her son, and, in 1871, he painted her as the figure in “Whistler’s Mother.” The painting was first shown in 1872, extending Whistler’s reputation, but it has received mixed reviews throughout much of its history. “Whistler’s Mother” now hangs in the Musee D’Orsay in Paris and has been rarely exhibited in the United States. Kothari. Planned as a compact unit for exhibition of films, the cinema is located on Rani Jhansi Road in Old Delhi Narendra K. Kothari, the founder of Kothari & Associates, came as a bachelor at the age of 24 to Delhi from Mumbai as part of the architectural firm Master, Sathe and Bhuta. He became synonymous with the ‘Bombay style house’ wherein he built more than 40% houses on Pusa Road, Golf Links, Jor Bagh, Sundar Nagar, Diplomatic Enclave etc. Chimanlal Motilal Master was one of the partners for the first all Indian-led architectural practice Master, Sathe and Bhuta. He was also actively engaged with the architectural department of J.J. - In 1929 Jack Cohen, opened the first Tesco grocery store in Burnt Oak, Edgware. Prior to this Cohen ran his business from a market stall and tea truck. The shop sold dry goods and its first own-brand product, Tesco Tea. In this era, customers orders were gathered and bagged personally by staff.

It‘s been more than ten years since the Chelsea closed its doors to guests and those same doors haven’t stopped revolving through a line up of stunningly underwhelming concepts for the remake... ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The Chelsea shines in our own history and in the travels of our co founder, Renata. First time round was in the late 70’s, then two decades later, it was the only hotel in NYC for Pappin en famille. When we heard it was closing we went to say our goodbye and for two weeks we stayed in our regular room, the one with the continuous balcony, the one right above the sign. It was a magical and bittersweet time . Stanley was gone, but the paintings weren’t down yet and the long time residents still held the lobby. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ That was in 2011. In 2014 Mr Bard passed away and across the years many of the residents gave up and moved on... but not all of them. There’s still an active tenants association and the mighty handful of stalwarts who’ve fought and won the right to stay. Soon enough though the old dame on west 23rd will give up the ghost. Later this year the Hotel Chelsea, former bastion of artists, flaneurs and micreants will, under new ownership, open her doors to the public once again. What started in 2007 will reach it’s only possible conclusion after a battle of wills that really was the only befitting denouement for an establishment that hosted and nurtured some of the 20th century’s finest refusers. Dylan Thomas, a one time resident, famously wrote: Do not go gentle into that good night. Rage,rage against the dying of the light”. The State Bank of India building on the historic Street of Chandni Chowk is a grade A category building. Over the years various adhoc alterations, additions were carried out on the building, disfiguring its historic character. Discussions between INTACH Delhi Chapter and SBI resulted in an agreement in 2002 to restore the façade of the building. The conservation project was divided into phases and work commenced towards the end of 2003 and was completed in March 2004. The façade restoration, though a small step, was a step in the right direction towards the conservation of Chandni Chowk. This conservation project lead to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to issue letters to other bank buildings on the street to follow suit. . . . . 🔙 El Bar Pompeya: de víctima de la riuada del 62 a rebre Lola Flores. El 25 de setembre de 1962 #Terrassa va patir la tragèdia més gran de la seva història. El bar Pompeya va ser també víctima de la força de la #riuada. Laigua va entrar i va inundar els baixos del local. Des daquella data, ja mai més es va jugar a les taules de joc que hi havia situades al soterrani. Al Bar s’hi jugava a les cartes i al dominó i els jocs més populars eren: la manilla, el subhastat i el “julepe”. Es va inaugurar el febrer del 1933 i estava situat a la plaça d’Anselm Clavé. El seu amo, en Sebastián era taxista i fins al 1962 va mantenir el taxi com a segona professió. Per aquest bar van passar personatges molt famosos, dels que podem citar: Lola Flores i el seu marit, el Manolo Caracol, els boxejadors Luis Romero i Antonio Soldevilla, els cantants Antonio Molina i molts jugadors del Barça i de l’Espanyol. El 17 de febrer del 1974 va tancar les seves portes i Sebastiàn Palos i Querol, va veure com quedaven enrera 41 anys d’història d’aquest emblemàtic local terrassenc. Lestabliment va ser enderrocat per construir-hi uns pisos que avui coneixem amb el nom d’edifici “Gutemberg”. Happy Labor Day! Mechanics Hall in Portland is a landmark of Maine workers. The Italianate building was built 1857-59 by and for members of the Maine Charitable Mechanic Association. It was designed by Portland architect Thomas Sparrow, also a member. The MCMA was founded in 1815 as a social organization for master crafts people, entrepreneurs, and apprentices in the “mechanical arts”.
