There are days where I don’t feel like getting out of bed, where my heart is forever broken, where the emptiness, sadness, darkness, and pain are too much to handle. This month is incredibly hard for my family. It’s the month we lost our son Nick on September 29th by suicide. It’s the month, unfortunately, where we met a family that reached out to us to share the loss of their beautiful daughter Brigette on today’s day, the 23rd. It’s painful just saying out loud that it’s Nicks two year anniversary. Two years!! It makes me want to scream! Literally makes me want to throw up! Two years not seeing his smile, his laugh, his swag, his charm, hearing his voice. These two years is only a reminder that I won’t see him in college, what career path he takes, what adventures he goes on, his wedding or how many kids he will have, or what kind of an amazing dad he would be. On this day, I wish to pray for Brigette, for her family because I know the pain they’re going through. Also, I ask you to pray for all those we’ve lost, and they’re families. As hard and painful as this is and will forever be, I reached out to my friends and asked them to pray for me. I asked for help. What I really wanted to do was just lay down and die, but it took a lot of effort and strength to reach out and ask for help but I did it! The beautiful thing is, that it helped!!!! Ask for help! It really does help, and it really does lift you up. Nick, Brigette, Sammy, Hutson, Lily, Ryanne, and so many wouldn’t want us to not ask for help. Remember, we lost them for a reason, and that reason was to save YOU! Lewis Blackbeard Nixon III was born September 30, 1918 in New York. On Jan 14, 1941, he was inducted into the U.S Army at Trenton, New Jersey, and headed to Officers Candidate School. It was here he would meet Richard Winters and they both would graduate as 2nd Lieutenants, volunteer for the paratroopers, and be assigned to Easy Company of the 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment. Nixon was initially assigned to 2nd platoon. While in the U.S, before the regiment left for England to prepare for the Normandy invasion, Nixon would be assigned as the 2nd Battalion Intelligence Officer (S2). He jumped into Normandy on D-Day, and shortly after the taking of Carentan, was promoted to Regimental S2. He jumped into The Netherlands & fought in the Battle of the Bulge with the 506th. He remained with the 506th through Germany, but was reassigned back down to battalion level as the Operations Officer (S3) due to his drinking problem. Even so, he still proved invaluable and gifted at his job. Nixon was one of the few men of the 101st Airborne to make more than 2 combat jumps & also jump with a different division in WW2. This occured when General Taylor, commander of 101st Airborne, assigned him as an observer with the 17th Airborne for Operation Varsity, a jump into Germany, on March 25, 1945. Nixon ended the war with the rank of Captain and returned home in Sep 1945, having never had to fire a shot during combat. He had been exceptionally skilled at his job & it was noted by the men that he was always present on the front line with the troops. After the war Nix had some tough years due to his alcoholism & had a few failed marraiges. But in 1956 he married Grace Umezawa (pictured with Nix), with Winters as his best man, and she helped him overcome his problems. They remained happily married until his death in Jan, 1995. His lifelong friend, Dick Winters, would give the eulogy at his funeral. Nixon was portrayed by Ron Livingston in Band of Brothers. Many of the Easy veterans remarked at the physical likeness of the two men, and how they had done a double take at the series premiere when they saw Ron sitting beside Grace. The Fund is designed to address a resource gap Firelight has noted in the nonfiction space for impact- and engagement-related projects by and for communities of color. Just the experience of filling up your car at a gas station with terracotta roof tiles screams classy.
