My personal 9/11/01 story is long. The short version is:⠀ ⠀ On 9/10/01, this was literally my view from the stage. Performing at The Garden for MJ’s 30th anniversary concert with MJ, his brothers, and every other artist on the show! ⠀ ⠀ On 9/11/01, I had to get back to LA to make rehearsals for another special. My Delta flight took off around 8a.m. We never made it to California! (I’m working on a book for the rest of the story)⠀ ⠀ I knew a few people personally who lost their lives that day. They worked in the building. I had been there many times. ⠀ ⠀ I will never forget that day! Heres a low-res copy of a photo of Mike Bloomfield with a Les Paul Sunburst, a picture taken in 1978 by guitarist and engineer Robb Lawrence. At the time, MB was being interviewed by Lawrence for the The Wizard of Waukesha, a documentary film about the legendary Les Paul (the man, not the guitar). The guitar was not Michaels 59 Standard – that storied instrument was lost in Vancouver in 1974 – but one that belonged to guitarist Robbie Dunbar of the band Earth Quake. Filming took place and MBs friend Norman Dayrons apartment, but this photo was probably taken at Michaels Reed St. home. On the wall are pictures of Dottie, Bloomfields mother, Nick Gravenites and Barry Goldberg, as well as a poster for a WNAP-sponsored gig with Mark Naftalin at the Rivoli in Indianapolis on June 2, 1973. MBs enthusiasm for the guitar is clearly evident from his wide-eyed expression, but he never again played one in performance. Any idea what chord hes playing? U.S. Olympians Tommie Smith and John Carlos — who’d won gold and bronze respectively in the 200-meter sprint — raising black-gloved fists during the medal ceremony at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City became one of the most iconic sports images of the 20th century. The protest had been something the two athletes carefully planned. As Smith and Carlos walked to the podium, they took off their shoes to protest poverty. They wore beads and a scarf to protest lynchings. And when the national anthem was played, they lowered their heads in defiance and raised their fists in a salute that rocked the world. Before the anthem started to play, Carlos recalled later that he thought about the symbols that had been chosen for that moment on the world stage. Happy Birthday to this Genius Man, Myth, Inventor Mr. LEO FENDER (Clarence Leonidas Leo Fender (August 10, 1909 – March 21, 1991) was an American inventor who founded Fender Electric Instrument Manufacturing Company. Leo Fender grew up in California, where an interest in electronics led him to open up a radio repair shop In 1938. But he didn’t just work on radios; his reputation earned him the respect of musicians who trusted him to repair their equipment. As time went on he founded Fender company. In January 1965, he sold the company to CBS and later founded two other musical instrument companies, Music Man and G&L. He was one of the most famous inventors in rock history, Leo Fender! His company was the first to mass-manufacture a solid body electric guitar, the Fender Broadcaster, back in 1948. This put the instrument within reach of many generations of future rock and rollers. A couple of years later Fender changed the name of the instrument to the Telecaster (1950). In 1954 he introduced the Stratocaster and with it, the tremolo bar. Those two guitars remain among the most popular choices for a wide range of classic rock’s most popular and innovative players, including Jimi Hendrix, David Gilmour, Buddy Guy, Yngwie Malmsteen, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and many more. He also introduced the Fender Precision Bass (1951) set the standard for electric bass guitars, and the Fender Bassman amplifier. Leo was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992—a unique achievement given that he never learned to play the instruments that he made a career of building.
