On this day, 1 October 1931, hundreds of tenants of an estate in Neukolln, Berlin, launched a rent strike to pressure their landlord into evicting the SA: Nazi Brownshirts. However, most of the tenants were on welfare so could not actually withhold their rent and so eventually the strike crumbled unsuccessfully. Happy Labor Day! Mechanics Hall in Portland is a landmark of Maine workers. The Italianate building was built 1857-59 by and for members of the Maine Charitable Mechanic Association. It was designed by Portland architect Thomas Sparrow, also a member. The MCMA was founded in 1815 as a social organization for master crafts people, entrepreneurs, and apprentices in the “mechanical arts”. #CavalierGhostStories Stories of guests having a sense about the historic Cavalier have been recounted for decades. A sixth floor sense, that is. The founder of the Coors Beer empire, Adolph Coors, mysteriously fell to his death from a sixth floor window in 1929. It was built in 1856 and was located at Mulberry and Park Streets near St. Marys Church. This brick building was replaced in 1890 by this building at 82 Mulberry Street which was known as St. Marys Boys School. Dr. Ebenezer Johnson became Buffalo’s first mayor in 1832. He built Johnson’s Cottage on Delaware Avenue in 1834 on 25 acres of land. After his death in 1849, the property was sold to the Buffalo Female Academy around 1851 and served as their first building. The Buffalo Female Academy later changed its name to Buffalo Seminary. The Alhambra Apartments are located at 4902 Capitol in the Dundee neighborhood. Completed in 1922, the Mission/Spanish Colonial Revival structure was built by the Drake Realty Construction Company amid a multi-family housing boom in the neighborhood. The building still stands today and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places as a member of the Dundee-Happy Hollow Historic District. Built Heritage is your portal to a selection of collections held in the John Oxley Library that showcase our built heritage and architecture in Queensland. One of these is the Royal Australian Institute of Architects collection, a series of photos commissioned for the Architecture Awards in Queensland. Each photo holds the stories of many Queenslanders, like this one of Kelvin Grove Infants School which opened in 1952. Designed by architect Leslie Sturmer Jacobson, this building was part of the major redevelopment of the school in the 1950s. The Infants School and the other new additions were regarded as leading examples of school architecture in post-war Queensland. Now the exterior of Block SA/SB of Kelvin Grove State College, the two storey building has a hipped roof and a concave, curved entrance bay that linked two long wings to form a V-shaped plan.
