Lindly Haunani has been a loyal #server at The Occidental since 1986. She was seriously injured in a traffic accident on February 4, 2020 in #WashingtonDC on her way to The Occidental. She had to be cut out of her car after a driver traveling at high speed caused a chain reaction of collisions in an intersection. Lindly was hospitalized and suffers from multiple broken bones including her leg, ribs, shoulder and fingers. Her injuries jeopardize her ability to work. Hispanic Heritage Month Day 10 Oscar Zeta Acosta (April 8, 1935-) was a writer, lawyer, and political activist. He was born in El Paso, Texas and was raised in Californias San Joaquin Valley, near Modesto. Takhti was an Iranian champion of wrestling and an Olympic gold medalist. He was a very successful athlete whose humility, political and philanthropic activities, along with his defiance against the injustice of the Shah’s regime made him a national hero. His opposition to the Shah and his support for Dr. Mossadegh led him to his death at the age of 37. On Jan 7th 1968, Takhti was found dead in his hotel room. Many believe that Takhti was assassinated by SAVAK agents. SAVAK was Iran’s intelligence agency during the Shah’s regime. An agency that was directly trained by the CIA. To this day, every Iranian remembers Takhti as a hero and a mythical symbol of resistance. His resistance became a symbol of Iran’s past and present, a hero in a fight against dictatorships that have enveloped our home. Takhti is remembered as “Pahlevān” a word that refers to a dignified, respectful, and honorable person carrying heroic feats with humility. I’m up on the top left pouring champagne for (left to right) Mark Bell (rest in peace Mark, we love you we miss you), Sergi Jorda (co-creator of the @reactable), Björk herself, and Marcos Alonso (@malonso co-creator of @reactable). . During Björk’s Volta tour I was her executive musical director, a role very much in sympathy with and in service of her creative musical director vision, and I also played live electronics - a whole crazy setup with a @reactable at its center. . Marcos and I have kept in touch over the years - after his work on Reactable he created the legendary iPad music app @samplr before moving from his home town of Barcelona over to California to join @apple . All of which is to say Marcos is an incredibly smart, creative, groundbreaking visionary whose ideas and ability to execute have produced instruments, tools, and products that inspire and delight countless people around the world. . Vivo in Italia da molto tempo, e mi sento a casa. Ho sempre pensato che ci fossero molte contraddizioni in questo bel paese che mi ospita, e durante il lockdown ho potuto vederle agire quasi tutte insieme. Quando Luisa mi ha chiesto di partecipare al progetto DIASTEMA per il numero sulla Nazione ne sono stata entusiasta. Non sono mai stata nazionalista né per la mia di patria né per quella che mi ha accolta. Pensare al concetto di Nazione è stata una sfida, soprattutto per me che in Italia ci sono per adozione e che come tutte le persone che “se ne vanno” non appartengo a nessun luogo. In questo particolare momento, poi, dove la Pandemia che ci raggira ci rende tutti uguali e la questione dei migranti invece ci sbatte in faccia quanto non lo siamo per nulla, il confine di “nazione” è sempre più netto e rappresentarne con efficacia il concetto rimane ancora più complesso. Ho pensato dunque di fermarmi alle questioni che stanno alla base di ogni nazione ovvero la cultura e la sua crescita. Le persone che la imparano, la usano la costruiscono. Ai luoghi dove la cultura e l’istruzione vengono coltivate e diffuse. Uno su tutti, la scuola. Questa è l’immagine fatta questa estate per DIASTEMA, e nasce da una domanda forse banale ma necessaria: quali sono le priorità di un paese che favorisce il calcio alla scuola? Co-existing With Other Sexual Orientations⁠ ⁠ I was around 22 years of my age when I found that I don’t feel how other girls in my college feel about women. I, initially resisted and ignored it, and told myself that it could just be the devil in my mind or my proactive self or perhaps a curiosity to explore the same gender but gradually the attraction towards the same gender multiplied ten folds. Even then, I was still attracted to men.⁠ ⁠ I also started to read about gender, gender fluidity, homosexuality and what is it to be bisexual. I couldn’t talk much about the feeling I persisted in myself because of the fear of how it would make people treat me. My journey as a bisexual person was becoming tougher- I needed someone to tell me it was alright to feel that way.⁠ ⁠ It was when, I, found out that sexual fluidity and identity has always been a challenge in cis domineering society. The colonisation of binary/straight/cis gender men and women is in the making. The problem lies not with their sexual identifications but with their thought process; with homophobia and a meek belief that homosexuality is unnatural.⁠ ⁠ I was disheartened to not be able to do anything about my urges, feelings and thought process. I was experiencing a major sexual shift between a man and a woman at the same time. I read more. I realised, that amidst a huge spectrum of sexual identities, both men and women get lost and end up in an identity crisis. I was under one. Despite, I knew I liked people regardless of their gender, but was sceptical on how to identify myself. I chose ‘bisexual’ as my identity and acknowledged the fact that identities are sometimes a journey; some people also experience shifts in their attraction that don’t fit into any static orientations. This is a part of human experience and nothing to look at with awe. Flawless 10-12 feet, 3 guys out. A session I’ll never forget. Besides the surf being as good as it could possibly get, one thing that made this session stand out more than maybe any other, was that they were performing a sound check on the judges tower that day. The guy blasted Metallica for over an hour, it was nuts. Stoked to have shared this session with Frederico and @danilosurfcosta. And of course thanks @friedenpete for nailing this shot. 10 years ago I graduated from college with a piano performance degree from San Francisco Conservatory of Music...I didn’t have much direction but I knew I wanted something different than being just another classical pianist..In 2015 I was still playing small gigs while teaching piano lessons to get by and living at my parents house...I got screwed over pretty badly on a few records I worked on, got no credits or money for them and I didn’t really have anything coming my way, but I stayed working hard and remained in the right head space...and now I’m currently sitting in my own home that I bought off of music I’ve made in the last 5 years, looking over all these charts and platinum records. Sometimes you gotta stop and appreciate everything. More than anything I’m just thankful to be working with amazing people, many that I consider to be family. Feeling extra blessed right now, and want to say an extra special thank you to all the incredible artists, producers and writers I’ve met and worked with in the past few years. The important thing to never forget is everyday I go into the studio, I still act like I live at my parents house and have nothing coming, because that mentality will eventually bring you everything. 🙏🏼 - @rogetchahayed on Instagram

36 years ago today, five students sat down for Saturday morning detention and the blueprint for every teen movie in the world since then was born. In 1984 Ronald Reagan was president. No one really had cellphones or computers. Mark Zuckerburg was less than two months from being born. Nothing in the world was the same as it is now yet everything was. Human beings are human beings and this film broke down suburban teenage life and angst in that time more perfectly than any other I’ve ever seen. It was written and directed by John Hughes. It starred Michael Anthony Hall, Judd Nelson, Molly Ringwald, Emilio Estevez and Ally Sheedy. It cost $1m to make and earned $51.5m at the box office. It took place in a fictional school school, Shermer High, in a fictional town called Shermer, Illinois, where most of John Hughes’ great adventures took place (see Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Pretty In Pink, Uncle Buck, Werid Science and Sixteen Candles). In celebration of that fateful Saturday morning fire up The Breakfast Club and let Brian’s parting words to their oppressive principal echo about in your head.
