Equality Day, August 26, 2020, marks the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage. To celebrate, Phenomenal has partnered with Jane Walker by @johnniewalkerus, a whisky that celebrates the achievements of women and all those pushing boundaries to create a more equitable future. This special-edition shirt will support the nonprofit Monumental Women @monumentalwomennyc in their efforts to honor the women who paved the way by breaking the bronze ceiling. Monumental Women will unveil the first-ever statue of real women – Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Sojourner Truth, and Susan B. Anthony – in NYC’s Central Park, where there are 23 statue of historical figures but not one honoring a *real* woman. And while we will celebrate Equality Day, we will also remember that the 19th amendment did not guarantee suffrage for all. For nearly half a century more, Black women still lacked protections to access the ballot box, even though Black women were central figures in the passage of the 19th Amendment. Lindey’s History lesson for the day! 👨🏻🎓Looking back to 1900 in our first picture. This is when Lindey’s was known as the Daeumler & Olnhausen Saloon. A sign by the door advertises lager from the Columbus Brewing Company. Picture 2 takes us to the 1950’s and a rather shady bar and rooming house known as King’s Rose Garden. It was sometimes referred to as the “Bucket of Blood” due to the ocasional violence here. Picture 3 takes us to present day Lindey’s. A few days late admittedly but happy birthday to Robbie Shakespeare one half of the great Rhythm Twins Sly & Robbie. I’ve been fortunate to see and photograph him many times both onstage backing the likes of Gregory Isaacs, Black Uhuru, Peter Tosh and Grace Jones, and also for several portrait sessions. It is with deep sadness to hear of the late passing of Jack Charlton, veteran of The Royal Horse Guards (known today as The Blues & Royals) and 1966 England World Cup winner. During his National Service, he served 2 years from 1953-55. He also captained the Horse Guards Football Team to victory in the Cavalry Cup in Hanover during his service.
