58 years ago tonight, Deputy United States Marshals operating under the authority of the White House and enforcing a court order from the Supreme Court, stood their ground on the steps of the Lyceum on the campus of Ole Miss facing off against more than 3,000 protestors. As a result of their actions, James Meredith, a Black United States Air Force veteran, was able to exercise his civil rights, enrolling in the previously all-white university. While the Marshals enforce the ruling using only tears gas, the mob threw bricks, bottles, and rocks ath the deputies and fired guns in their direction, defacing the facade of the building, injuring multiple deputies, and nearly killing one deputy from Indiana. Additionally, two individuals not associated with the Deputies were killed by members of the mob. Hear and see more about this story in this Curator Conversation filmed in the United States Marshals Museum collections storage area. https://youtu.be/JjN4D74BEBI - @marshalsmuseum on Instagram

The possibility that we are living in a false vaccum has never been a cheering one to contemplate. Vaccum decay is the ultimate ecological catastrophe; in a new vaccum there are new constants of nature; after vaccum decay, not only is life as we know it impossible, so is chemistry as we know it.🙂 Their is possibility that youre safe... #physicslab #cosmologylovers #cosmologist #physicsfun #astronomyfacts #astronomy_science #physics_in #mathsphysics - @being_asolo_ship on Instagram

German scientists have just finished upgrading a solar telescope called GREGOR at the Teide Observatory in the Canary Islands, and the result is a spectacular new set of images of our star. GREGOR began its observations in 2012 as Europes largest solar telescope and the upgrade project began in 2018. The upgrades included work on the telescopes optics and control systems, repainting the observatory to reflect less light and interfere less with observations, and implementing new scheduling policies to improve the scientific output of observations. . . . . .
