The Siberian Unicorn (Elasmotherium) reproduction sculpture š² Credit: Blue Rhino Studio ElasmotheriumĀ is a genusĀ of largeĀ rhinocerosĀ endemic toĀ EurasiaĀ during theĀ Late PlioceneĀ through theĀ Pleistocene, existing from 2.6Ā MaĀ to at least as late as 39,000Ā years ago in theĀ Late Pleistocene.Ā A more recent date of 26,000 BPĀ is considered less reliable. Three species are recognised. The best known,Ā E. sibiricum, orĀ Siberian unicorn was the size of a mammoth and is thought to have borne a large, thick horn on its forehead. Theories about the function of this horn include defense against predators, attracting mates, driving away competitors, sweeping snow from the grass in winter, and digging for water and plant roots. Like all rhinoceroses, elasmotheres wereĀ herbivorous. Unlike any other rhinos, its high-crownedĀ molarsĀ were ever-growing. The known specimens ofĀ E. sibiricumĀ reach up to 4.5Ā m (15Ā ft) in body length with shoulder heights over 2Ā m (6Ā ft 7Ā in) whileĀ E. caucasicumĀ reaches at least 5Ā m (16Ā ft) in body length with an estimated mass of 3.6ā4.5 tonnes (4ā5 short tons), based on isolatedĀ molarsĀ that significantly exceed those known from the Siberian species. Both species were among the largest in the family Rhinocerotidae. -------------------- -------------------- Visit our website š² š» www.paleontologyworld.com ā (link in Bio) -------------------- š Science š Curiosities š PaleoArt š Entertainment ---------------------------- š» Facebook ā¶Paleontology World - LIKE š ---------------------------- š» Instagram ā¶@paleontologyworld_com ---------------------------- š Activate Post Notifications! š» Double Tap & Tag Your Friends! ---------------------------- š« ATTENTION! š« Spammers, Vulgar or Offending Language in the Comment Section will be dealt with Permanent Ban ā WITHOUT PRIOR WARNINGā ---------------------------------------- #elasmotherium #paleontology #Š“ŠøŠ½Š¾Š·Š°Š²Ń #arctodus #dinosaur #dinosaurs #dinosaurios #dinosaurier #dinosauri #dinomite #dinosaurio #dinosaure #dinozaur #unicorncake #fossil #fossils #unicorn #mammals #rhino #siberia #science #trex #tyrannosaurusrex #jurassicpark #jurassicworld #rhinoceros #scalemodel #mammal #pliocene #pleistocene - @paleontologyworld_com on Instagram

Today is #ElephantAppreciationDay, a reasonāif ever one was neededāto celebrate our big-eared, long-nosed friends in all their oversized glory. This picture was taken by the Uganda-born photographer John Drysdale and features in his beloved photo-book, Our Peaceable Kingdom, a heartwarming ode to interspecies friendships. These range from llamas and Rhodesian Ridgebacks, to horses and Basset Hounds, to this young girl and the elephant with whom she was raised (who, Drysdale notes, was possessed of the āunusual ability to sit on his haunchesā). #imageoftheday - @elephantmagazine on Instagram

Megalodon hunting...prehistoric elephants! šØ By PaleoGuy (James Kuether) The Megalodon, which went extinct millions of years ago, was the largest shark ever to prowl the oceans and one of the largest fish on record. The scientific name,Ā Carcharocles megalodon, means giant tooth, and for good reason: Its massive teeth are almost three times larger than the teeth of a modernĀ great white shark. Ā The megalodons fossilized bones and teeth give scientists major clues about what the creature was like and when it died off. In 2014, a research group at the University of Zurich studied megalodon fossils using a technique called optimal linear estimation to determine their age. Their research, published in the journalĀ PLOS ONE, found that most of the fossils date back to the middle Miocene epoch to the Pliocene epoch (15.9 million to 2.6 million years ago). All signs of the creatures existence ended 2.6 million years ago in the current fossil record, the authors wrote. For comparison, our earliestĀ Homo sapiensĀ ancestors emerged only 2.5 million years ago, during the Pleistocene epoch, according to theĀ University of California Museum of Paleontology. A very small portion of the Zurich studys data ā 6 out of 10,000 simulations ā showed a 1% chance that these giant sharks could still be alive. That chance seems pretty slim, and the researchers wrote in the study that they rejected popular claims of present-day survival ofĀ C. megalodon. -------------------- Visit our website š² š» www.paleontologyworld.com ā (link in Bio) -------------------- š Science š Curiosities š PaleoArt š Entertainment -------------------- š» Facebook ā¶Paleontology World - LIKE š -------------------- š» Instagram ā¶@paleontologyworld_com -------------------- #megalodon #paleontology #Š“ŠøŠ½Š¾Š·Š°Š²Ń #prehistoric #dinosaur #dinosaurs #dinosaurios #dinosaurier #dinosauri #dinomite #dinosaurio #dinosaure #dinozaur #sharkteeth #sharktattoo #fossils #makoshark #sea #sharkweek #fossil #science #trex #tyrannosaurusrex #jurassicpark #jurassicworld #shark #sharkselfie #sharks #pliocene #miocene - @paleontologyworld_com on Instagram

Google Maps has removed images from the summit of Uluru, after Australiaās national parks body raised concerns over the fact that people were using street view to āwalkā on top of the sacred Indigenous site. Visitors were banned from physically climbing the rock in October 2019 out of respect for the wishes of Uluruās traditional owners, the Aį¹angu people, for whom it has spiritual significance. But until the afternoon of September 23, people could still use Google Mapsā street view function to take a virtual walking tour up the now-closed walking track to the top of the rock, where user-generated photos would give them 360-degree photos of the summit. A spokesperson for Parks Australia told the ABC on Thursday that the government body had alerted Google Australia to the user-generated images from the Uluru summit that have been posted on their mapping platform and ārequested that the content be immediately removed in accordance with the wishes of Aį¹angu, Ulurus traditional owners, and the national parks Film and Photography Guidelines. Hours later, a Google spokesperson told 9News that the imagesāwhich included photos of people celebrating atop the summitāhad been taken down. More at the link in bio. - @viceau on Instagram
