Update for you on the trial for the McMichaels: Both defendants have filed motions for bond. Georgia law uses four criteria to determine possible bond for defendants. They include: 1) No flight risk 2) No danger to people or property in the community 3) No risk of committing another felony and 4) No risk of witness intimidation. The motions for each man argued that they were not flight risks and essentially attempted to hold them up as upstanding citizens. Specifically, the motion for Travis had exhibits attached that had pictures of him and his son and discussed Travis military record and commendations to justify granting him bond. Gregs motion merely asked for a bond hearing and notes that his counsel will present evidence to support a reasonable bond at the hearing. Also, in a separate motion, the two men have asked that two charges be dropped, challenging the way the counts are described in the indictments (its a form argument and not substance). Now, all this legal language. What does this really mean? 1. The court will set a bond hearing soon for the two men, since they have filed motions. Probably within the next several weeks. 2. The court will also rule on the motion re: the charges. It is very unlikely the court will rule in their favor on this. Interesting: Mr. Bryans lawyer basically said, Us too and asked to join the motion on dropping the two charges. Look out for details on the dates for the bond hearings in the near future. Do you think the general public thinks sugary drinks and fried foods are healthy? No. When I worked for Daily Table in Dorchester, which provides healthy food at a low price in a lower income neighborhood of Boston, I did research into the needs of the community there. Why didn’t more people choose the store’s food over more expensive fast food options? Clearly this wasn’t an access issue, but was it an education issue? What I learned was humbling. Think of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. When you’re worried about your car starting tomorrow, about paying rent next week, when you’re stressed from working three jobs and living in a dangerous neighborhood, you may not have the luxury/privilege to worry about long term health. Fast food and sugary drinks may not be healthy, but they taste so good, light up reward centers in the brain, and you know the kids will be happy eating it. These ultra-processed hyper-palatable foods allow people, for a moment, to forget about their worries and indulge in a rich sensory experience that may be one of the biggest pleasures of the day. Blaming the individual for not having the knowledge that this food is unhealthy is really overly simplifying the problem. I know many of you will tell me that you grew up poor but always ate well. Or that you’re currently poor and eat well. I applaud you for that choice. But for many, they can only worry about so many things. This is Mama Rosita. To make a living, she is cooking and selling pagpag, leftover food collected from garbage and dumps, which is recycled for selling. According to the World Hunger Report, there are still some 14 million undernourished Filipinos and 13 million food-insecure Filipinos. Taken together, these account for nearly a third of the country’s population. Many of these people cannot afford a single meal, so they resort to buying pagpag. We visited Tondo, one of the slums located in Manila, where we met up with Mama Rosita, to find out more about pagpag. This episode is #15 of our THE VOICELESS series.
