Look! It’s the first huge batch of letters that I’ll mail to voters on Oct. 17th as part of the @votefwd initiative. It’s even easier than I thought it would be. You sign up and can commit to as few as 5 letters! (I did 40 tonight and it took a little less than two hours; I watched TV the whole time!) You print out the letters (each page is customized for the specific recipient) and add a brief sentence or two about why voting matters to you. They actually recommend that you don’t endorse a particular candidate or party, which may make it a bit less intimidating for those of you who are voting for Biden but aren’t as thrilled about it as you’d like to be. Then you put the letter into an envelope, address it, and put only your first name and last initial along with a return address for the Vote Forward campaign. (In other words, no one you’re sending letters to will know who you are or where you live!) They ask that you mail the letters on a specific date for maximum effect, so I’m going to keep adding to my collection so I can send as many as possible on 10/17. Bonus: handwriting nerds like me can try out different fonts and handwriting styles while promoting democracy. I experimented with all sorts of handwriting and ended up going back to my own Janet font by the end. Still, I nerded out. I highly recommend this to anyone who has even fifteen minutes to spare. It’s the most effective & empowered I’ve felt in awhile as an individual in this crappy year. Low stakes and minimal effort from you, but research indicates that the chances that you’ll inspire a voter to actually head to the polls is pretty high. Eight months ago I was fed up with my body and decided to take a leap into understanding nutrition better. I was looking for answers to help unlock my weightloss struggles. I’ve been on a health journey since I had my last baby 6 years ago. It took me 5 years of exercise and dieting consistency to lose only 25 lbs. Frustrating to say the least, when everyone around you is making huge leaps, and I’m barely breaking the starting line. I participated in a boot camp style class 4 days a week, upped my day to day activity and ate healthy foods. I was borderline obsessed and mentally exhausted. Thru this struggle, I’m grateful I found a love for exercise, and have established a healthy habit in that area. Nutrition is where I felt I needed to focus to figure out ME. At this point in time, I’m not where I want to be but I’m getting there. One day at a time, and learning everyone doesn’t fit into the same box has been a huge relief. It’s not just eat less and move more. I’m so thankful for this course and it’s insight it has brought me. The Canson Mixed Media Sketchbook is a good option for those starting with art journaling! The paper is 98 lb weight, which means it’s thicker than the average sketchbook. It holds up well to wet media with a little bit of buckling from the moisture. Bleeding through the page is pretty minimal, almost non-existent. The only feature that might not be appealing is the coil binding. I find it helpful since it allows the journal to lay flat, but some people don’t like the interruption the coil brings. This is personal preference! This heavy time were living through, right now, has brought with it so much noise - but also a quietness as weve all been called to take pause. This morning, I woke up to my five year old kissing the tears on my face and handing me this card shed written for me. Ten years ago today, I lost my mama - and I still feel her loss so deeply, today. I spent much of the day reflecting on all the ways that it changed me, including the way in which it fueled me to turn this hobby of mine into a career. It was one of my last conversations with her that pushed me to pursue my passion for creating and capturing memories - and to share it with others. It was looking back and realizing I dont have nearly enough photos of her or with her past my childhood years to look back on and to hold onto and to share with my own babies - and hoping I can give others more. And while my mama remains my first why, its these babes of mine - their love, their hearts, their ability to connect so deeply - that keep me going. They are the reason I spend my days showing up for them and working tirelessly into the night to serve my clients. They inspire me and support me and remind me that the work I do has purpose. This pandemic threatens the livelihood of many small business owners like myself. But our purpose remains - to serve and support our community. And for me right now, that looks like carrying out my social responsibility to shelter in place while also supporting as many of my peers as possible. I actually work for a nonprofit. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeast Louisiana, to be exact. Yesterday, we received great news that out of 2,000 submissions nationally we were chosen by State Farm as 1 of 200 organizations (and 1 of 2 in all of Louisiana) to potentially receive a $25,000 grant in support of our COVID-19 Disaster Relief Efforts. Some quick insight into what we’ve been doing during COVID to support the disadvantaged populations in Louisiana: wellness checks with thousands of kids and their families, daily FREE meal distribution to those experiencing food insecurity, rent/mortgage and bill assistance, free virtual programming for kids, etc. We’ve been busy, our community needs us now more than ever. So, the $25,000 could go a VERY long way to continue supporting Louisiana residents in need. In order to receive the $25,000, we have to place in the top 40 nationally out of 200 and we do that with YOUR HELP, VOTING!!! Starting yesterday through next Friday October 2nd you can vote for us up to 10X per day AND you can use all of your votes at once. It’s insanely fast and easy, I did it in less than 2 minutes. As Eat Out to Help Out comes to an official end (although living-on in spirit in some great establishments), we took the opportunity to eat in for a change and ordered from a new local caterer. The Fosse Kitchen (@thefossekitchen) has been created by Maisie from her home in Chedworth. Maisie kindly delivered our food directly to our door and it was a delight to meet her. Moving back from London, Maisie has started The Fosse Kitchen to pursue her dream of catering with fantastic local produce to small events, with parties and business lunches of up to 30 people both catered for. We had a great selection to get through that includes gazpacho, potted crab, burrata and heirloom tomatoes, chard, courgette and chorizo salad, Sri Lankan Monkfish curry and a chocolate brownie. We were amazed at how great the food was considering it had to come over from Chedworth to our food bunker in Cheltenham. The gazpacho was full of flavour and beautifully light, the potted crab came with sourdough toast and they were amazing together. Burrata and heirloom tomatoes (with pinenuts and basil) are one of my favourite things in the world and this was one of the best. It was delicious with a good range of tomatoes, a huge chunk of burrata and a good amount of seasoning. When cooking chard at home weve found it to be quite salty but Maisie really did it justice. It had a good crunch but wasnt salty (I obviously did something wrong) and the courgette ribbons and flakes of chorizo really elevated the dish to a level I wasnt expecting. The Sri Lankan monkfish with coconut rice was another fantastic dish too. There were pomegranate seeds to give a pop of freshness and crispy bits of coconut to give texture. We put the brownie in the oven for a few minutes to warm it through. It was sticky, chocolatey and rich - just what you want (and need) after a great five-course meal. If you need private catering at an event for up to 30 people, we would recommend Maisie and her team as the food was fantastic and she was lovely. In a summer when people flew and gathered - some lucky guests were mailed this Save The Date destination wedding package. A double-sided postcard on a linen-textured cardstock set the scene and a custom luggage tag set the tone. Travelers were in for a LUXE weekend. To keep things sleek and orderly, a mini enclosure linked guests to their website - filled with travel info. The cards were boxed and parcels were wrapped in brown paper, sealed, labeled then stamped with custom rubber logos. The commissioning bride is an expert in the industry so when she asked US to handle this, we were flattered (then nervous) then so IN. On this #TBT , we continue our exploration of the history in and around Sheridan’s Pioneer Park. Not familiar with Pioneer Park? You likely hadn’t had an opportunity to visit Sheridan prior to 1980. Pioneer Park was the former name of what is today’s Kendrick Park. The park’s land was donated by Senator John B. Kendrick and another early Sheridan settler, Andrew Nielson. Their donation also created the pasture for the bison and elk, the latter of which we covered in last week’s post. At one time, the Pioneer Park Zoo was adjacent to the lower portions of the pasture. It housed a wolf, coyote, antelope, bear, badger, porcupine, lion, alligator, monkey, peacock and even an ocelot! Though the zoo was closed in the 1970s, the remnants of its concrete walls are used today as the covered picnic area northeast of the playground. While Pioneer Park may be no more, be sure to stop by Kendrick Park Friday, Oct. 2 and Saturday, Oct. 3 for Trailfest. Yesterday, it happened - I’m officially a PMP. My summer was spent studying for 2 hrs every day (triple that on weekends), taking 1,000’s of practice questions, reading & re-reading material, having almost no social life, balancing my work responsibilities, missing out on time with friends/family, maintaining discipline, staying focused, and never giving up. The journey was not easy, I stumbled, I had setbacks, I was constantly frustrated, but I never stopped working hard, and I’m so relieved it paid off. Clicking ‘submit’ after my 4-hour exam (waiting 10 seconds for my result) and seeing those 4 beautiful letters [PASS] was the greatest rush of my summer 💯. This wasn’t your average wallpaper folks!!! That beautiful handwriting you see on the wall is actually images of our clients grandmothers recipe cards that were handed down to her ❤️ . Swipe left to see my reaction when this arrived... At the age of 21 my father made the decision to flee communist controlled Czechoslovakia, where he’d been conscripted to the army. Escaping by jumping an armed border to Austria, his suitcase burst open while attempting to scale the fence to freedom and a better life. A looming risk of being shot on sight, he was forced to leave all his belongings and documents behind. With nothing but the clothes on his back and a bar of soap, he was given a piece of paper from the Austrian-Australian Embassy - an invite of sorts that read “Affidavit in Lieu of Passport”. This piece of paper allowed for his travel to Australia to begin a new life. In my life I’ve had the opportunity to receive a few pieces of paper of my own - a high school certificate and two university degrees. However, this invite here represents my proudest achievement. It’s a symbol of years of unwavering commitment, self belief, and some luck. It’s unlikely that any of this would have played out this way, however, without my father making that brave decision, or the country I now call home accepting him with open arms.
