Happy Monday Kind Community! There’s a lot of work to be done within ourselves and for parents, with our kids. We know that our community is made up of a wide range of ages, so we compiled a list of books to help start important conversations, to educate and to diversify our libraries. This is just one small step that we can all take, with the more important piece being the actions that each of us take in our daily lives. This list was compiled based on recommendations and lists from Embrace Race, We Need Diverse Books, Liz Kleinrock’s Teach and Transform, New York Times, Smithsonian Mag, USA Today, New York Mag, and Today Show. Age categories based on publishers’ and Common Sense Media recommendations. But of course with anything when it comes to your kids, take a look at it yourself and make the decision for what is best and appropriate for your child. If you are buying any of these books, we encourage you to buy from independent Black-owned bookstores. @literaryhub put together a list of Black-owned bookstores that are currently processing online orders and we have a swipe up to that in our story. UBC Pharm Sci Student Initiatives: Handmade Cards for Inpatients and Care Home Residents * Third-year Entry-to-Practice PharmD student Navjit Moore has been making cards to brighten the spirits of hospital patients and care home residents in Burnaby and Abbotsford. Each card contains a personalized message or quote. * So far, Navjit has created 279 cards. 100 cards went to patients at Burnaby General Hospital and residents at Fellburn Care Centre in Burnaby, 100 to residents at Fair Haven Homes, and 79 to residents at the Oxford Senior Care Centre in Abbotsford. * Says Navjit: “I am a regular volunteer at Fair Havens Home where I play chess with the residents, and Burnaby General Hospital where I help out as a team lead and way-finder. I am also Crohns and Colitis Canada Fraser Valley East chapter president since 2015. Unfortunately, all of my volunteer work has been put on hold and being immunocompromised myself has meant that I have had to get creative in the ways I can contribute during this pandemic. So this has literally been a journey. I have been invited to join the Local 798 Makeup artist and hairstylist union. I started makeup artistry as a late bloomer and literally from scratch. I wasnt that person who wore or played in makeup growing up. I moved to Atlanta in 2006 to attend college for IT support and to find my purpose. Needless to say my purpose kinda found me instead. While just modeling for fun I saw what I looked like for the first time in makeup. The rest is history. Never in a million years would I have ever thought that this would be how my life or career would be. I feel like I finally achieved something in my life without quitting this time. Thank you Octopus for a Preemie UK www.octopusforapreemie.com are a group of ladies who make octopuses for neonatal babies. They also kindly donate them to us for our residents (here at St Georges Park) as they are very tactile and give our residents a sense of comfort. These wonderful ladies decided to make wash bags for all our staff too. Holly who works for them collected all the wash bag up and brought them to us. The wash bags are used at the end of our shifts so that we can put our uniform in them and then throw them straight into the washing machine when we get home.
