I wasnt even school age when I first wished that I was white. And I spent nearly 2 decades after that first wish still wishing it. I was 7 or 8 the first time I was called ni**er. I was in grade 7 when the boy I had a crush on told me he wouldnt be my boyfriend because I was black. I was in grade 8 when a friend told me I couldnt go to their place because their dad would never let a black person in their home. I was 12 when my white parent warned me to do my best to blend in when my church youth group went caroling in an assisted living facility at Christmas. There are people there that wont like that youre black and especially wont like that your mixed. My parent knew this, because they worked there. With those residents, who ranted, unaware that the HCA they were speaking with was married to a black persin and had biracial children. I was 16 when I was told I was quite pretty for a black girl I was 19 when people whispered things about my now husband planning to marry a black woman. I was and am in my 20s now as I continue to be put in uncomfortable situations that have me anxious days in advance, occasions when I know I will be seeing someone who is racist. Who will likely say something that cuts deep, insights fear or otherwise offends, and that I will need to bite my tongue or risk being labeled as rebellious or worse. Its right now that Im expected to keep the peace so that whole rooms dont fall silent. Im supposed to laugh off KKK jokes, slave jokes and comments and theories demonizing the BLM movement like Im not black. Its my responsibility to take on the discomfort to keep everyone else comfortable. I thank God that I dont have to fear my for my life like black people south of the border do, but that doesnt negate the fact that racism is what lead them there and racism is here too. And Im done pretending that its not to protect other peoples feelings. I see now the part Ive been playing in lettingso many wrongs continue by letting white people say and do racist things in my presence without correcting them and calling them out.
