Here are prints of some of my images from IN THE COMFORTABLE DARK OF MY ROOM. These took awhile to produce, as these were all handmade 1 at a time in Japan, but very pleased with the result. The paper is made from long-fiber Kozo which creates a soft textured sheet. The paper was left unbleached with natural deckled edges. In creating these images, I actually experimented with layering a similar type of fibrous paper with my medium format camera to get this textured effect. So it was great to actually be able to print on this medium to intensify that sense of materiality. Given that they took awhile to produce, I initially planned to have these just as a personal set. Inspired by my daily strolls throughout Los Angeles, taking one the beauty and the chaos of the urban landscape. These intricate objects feature embroidery on cotton/linen, crotchet with mixed fibers, stuffed and wrapped objects and hand built ceramic forms by talented artist and friend, @kckrantz These hanging sculptures measure approximately 36” from top to bottom. The cotton/linen forms measure roughly 7” wide x 8” high x 2” deep. Kantha (Sanskrit for “rags”) is one of the oldest forms of Indian embroidery. It harks back to the tradition of Bengali housewives repurposing discarded clothes and fabric patches with a simple running stitch using threads from sari borders. So, @areumin_azu’s Instagram feed, which is dedicated to showcasing her gorgeous Kantha creations, comes as a bit of a surprise considering the 40-something artist was born and raised in Tokyo and has never been to India. Azu’s mother had always admired traditional Asian textiles, and she first tackled Kantha work under her tutelage before studying the basics of design at an art university. The mounting work pressure as a manager and buyer of clothing and accessories stores forced her to put a lid on her artistic activities for over a decade until around 2018, when a crippling mid-life crisis drove her to consider the bigger picture. Beeswax wraps! If your waste or plastic free, you have to get these. Beeswax wraps are very handy when your putting food away. They will keep things fresh, just like Saran Wrap. This is a great substitute for Saran Wrap. Though sushi may be one of my favourite foods, it is also probably one of the most wasteful meals. The average family uses about 24 rolls of Saran Wrap each year. That adds up to about $90. Have you been relying on the ‘hit and miss’ or ‘I hope it works’ method of creating textile art? Embracing a more systematic approach fuelled Sue Stone’s hand stitch practice. She went from lost and unconfident to inspired and successful. She became a textile artist with a clear and distinctive voice. After a major failure – a rejection from Embroiderers’ Guild – Sue went back to the drawing board. The ambitious projects she’d been attempting had left her feeling overwhelmed, confused and disappointed. But she still loved to stitch. She started making quick and easy samples in front of the TV. Little did she know, this was the start of a system for experimentation that would transform her textile art. Discoveries in sampling made their way onto Christmas cards that Sue gave to relatives and close friends, one of whom was her ex-drawing tutor Alf Ludlam. Alf saw potential and gave Sue a set of photographs of the medieval Thornton Abbey as a source of inspiration. The patterns and textures in the images fascinated Sue. She began exploring ways to emulate them with stitch, again using sampling as her starting point. This project galvanised Sue’s process and led to a full series of works. There were early signs of what would become her signature style. With each new piece her voice strengthened. This collection was exhibited at the local library in the first of many solo shows. Her success was no accident. Sue had developed a system for experimentation with stitch. By asking ‘What if?’ she had a starting point. And sampling offered a way of trying out ideas before transferring them to larger pieces. Best of all it was manageable; through her samples Sue was constantly taking steps towards finding her own take on traditional techniques. That sense of progression motivated her to continue her creative journey, which has led to a style that is personal and highly distinctive.
