#WorldRhinoDay2020: Rhinos, it so happens, have carved a long and illustrious existence on the planet and used to be rather numerous, speciose, and widespread once upon a geological period in time. Several diverse species of rhinos have existed through the different stages of their evolutionary history spanning 30-34 million years. The largest and one of the first known rhino species to occur was the Paraceratherium which weighed up to 20 tonnes and stood 5 m. tall at the shoulder. It is known to be the largest land mammal to have ever lived! The origins of rhinos can be traced back to the group of animals called perissodactyls which were odd-toed hoofed animals or ungulates. Interestingly, the perissodactyls also happen to be the ancestors of present day horses, zebras and tapirs! The last of the woolly rhinos which lived alongside modern humans, are believed to have perished as recently as 10,000 years ago, as per the fossil record. According to reports, up until the early 20th century, nearly 500,000 rhinos roamed the grassy savannah habitats in Asia and Africa. Today, between the five extant rhino species - black rhino and white rhino in Africa and the greater one-horned rhino, Javan rhino and Sumatran rhino in Asia - only 27,000-30,000 individuals remain. Rampant poaching for the horn, rapid habitat loss and climate change now threaten to wipe away these last vestiges of the glorious rhino lineage forever. Si deslizas la segunda imagen son las ruinas de #iglesia de Las Mercedes tras el terremoto de 1812, ubicada en la actual parroquia Altagracia del municipio Libertador. Este templo resultó muy dañado por el sismo y no se reconstruyó totalmente hasta 1857. . Scarves are a great accessory to have as the weather gets cooler. Not only are they a stylish addition to any mans outfit, but they also provide warmth in cold temperatures. Here is a more detailed history of the scarve. While many credit its history to use by the Terracotta soldiers in China, the scarf dates all the way back to ancient Rome where it was originally called a Sudarium, literally translated to mean “sweat cloth”. It was used in Rome for cleanliness, and the cloth scarf was often worn tied to the waist of the man, or loosely wrapped around the neck on warmer days. In the event of a formal affair, the scarf was almost always worn, and various grades of cloth could easily separate the affluent and wealthy members of society from the rest. The scarf was now seen on a daily basis as men would continually wear them out, both for cleanliness, but now, due to the separation of class, as a way to showcase their status or elitism in society. By the third century BC, the appeal and popularity of the Roman introduced scarf had made its way to China and was now being worn by the Terracotta soldiers of the Qin Shi Huang dynasty as a form of military garb in used as a way to discern the soldiers rank, based on the style or fashion of the scarf. By the end of the nineteenth century, scarves had gone from a regular accessory worn by men and women to one of the most essential forms of neckwear worn on a daily basis by men of all classes. Since then, scarves have been a globally popular fashion accessory for men and today still provide the warmth, religious and protective qualities of a bygone era. - @gentlemansgazette on Instagram

I did the art for @jefferyself’s short film that he released yesterday. It’s so funny and goofy and it’s raising money for @bailproject. I did a lot of the work on this during the big rainstorm two weeks ago, while listening to Broadway musicals. It looked like Vancouver (my hometown) through the windows, and the whole scene transported me back to a childhood filled with rainy Saturdays spent drawing and listening to musicals. Connecting with that version of myself reminded me that I’ve loved to draw my entire life, and also that I am still who I have always been. I’m turning 30 in two weeks, and I feel more lost now than I have ever felt; I knew who I was and what I wanted, drawing at my kitchen table as a kid. I guess all of this is to say that I love to draw, and I want to do more of it, and I’m so happy that I got to do this project not only because it is joyful but also because it was a little wormhole to the past that helped me wave at myself as a kid, and she waved back with a confidence and a faith that I love. - @lulukrause on Instagram

Virtual Museum Open Day #InternationalMuseumDay #IMD2020 Notes from our Archive From the Gibraltar Directory of 1909: During the last twenty-five years the methods of travel near Gibraltar, which had previously remained practically unaltered ever since the Rock first came into the possession of Great Britain, over 200 years ago, have been entirely revolutionised. The construction of the road from Algeciras to Tarifa during the late seventies was the first real advance made, since it enabled wheeled transport to be employed for the first time between Algeciras and the railway near Cadiz. Before that period, the only means of communication between the Rock and the interior of Spain was by means of riding horses and pack animals. A yet greater advance was made when the Algeciras-Bobadilla railway was opened in 1890, whereby Gibraltar was for the first time placed in direct communication with the railway system of Spain and Europe. The railway has in its turn led to the construction of various roads such as that from the town of San Roque to the Station of that name and others from Algeciras to Los Barrios, &c., and slowly but surely, wheeled transport is being introduced into many parts of the country.
