Am Samstag hat uns @mr.nice.watch besucht und diese wirklich schöne, auf 2500 Stück limitierte, Seiko Shippo Enamel abgeholt! Das Besondere an dieser Uhr ist definitiv das Ziffernblatt! Es ist in der Herstellung extrem aufwendig und es gibt in Japan nur noch sehr wenige Menschen, die diese jahrhunderte alte Technik (Shippo) beherrschen. Hierbei wird ein spezieller Lack auf das Blatt aufgetragen, welcher danach gebrannt und ein wenig poliert wird. Dieser Schritt wird mehrmals wiederholt. Jeder kleinste Fehler kann das Blatt ruinieren. Diese extrem präsize Arbeit resultiert in ein wunderschönes Blau, welches mit einer spannenden Tiefe und wechselnder Optik bei verschiedenen Lichtverhältnissen überzeugt. A SEIKO TOOL WATCH STORY – We all know the Rolex GMT-Master…but what about its more affordable Japanese cousins, the Seiko World Time and Navigator Timer? . Although the most famous function of world time/GMT watches is for pilots, they were also marketed to finance professionals, executives, lawyers, and others who could take advantage of the multiple time zones. Which was the case for the World Time and Navigator Timer. The concept of keeping track of multiple time zones was not new, but in terms of wristwatches it really became prevalent in the second-half of the 20th century, mostly in Europe. When Seiko came around to it in the 1960s, they were already behind companies like Glycine and Rolex. The Seiko Navigator Timer was first released in the mid-1960s, along with the Seiko World Time, which was released in 1964 for the Tokyo Olympics. . The first Seiko World Time hosted the Cal. 6217. On the bezel it had the names of 24 cities, representing time zones, with a bi-directional rotating inner bezel to indicate the time in the wearer’s chosen time zones. The Cal. 6217A was automatic, featured 17 jewels, and had a 18,000 bph. The Seiko Navigator Timer, on the other hand, first used the Cal. 6217 but upgraded to the Cal. 6117 around 1968. It had 24-hour indicators on the outer bezel and a GMT hand to keep track of the second time zone. The Cal. 6117A also had 17 jewels, but a 21,600 bph and a power reserve of 47 hours. It featured Seiko’s Diashock system and came in the 6117B version, which included hacking seconds. Both the World Time and the Navigator Timer were water resistant and both were relatively expensive for the time. . Generally, the Seiko World Time is the more popular of the two but both fly under the radar as far as vintage Seiko goes. That could be because they are somewhat scarce or the fact that prices are on an increasing trend, but either way they’re a great choice when it comes to unique vintage tool watches. . Caught in a #creative #photography attack I decide to take a few #shots. Of all , the most beautiful shot is certainly that of movement, the unstoppable #Landeron 51. The Landeron 51 is one of the most #famous chronographic movements in the world, in fact it is a derivative of the Landeron 48 created in more than 3.5 million specimens. It is a manual winding movement with 17 #jewels and cam switching, requires the use of two counters( seconds at 9 oclock and minutes at 3 oclock) and has a #power reserve of 41h. This movement dating back to the 60s has been chosen and used by many #maison , including indeed, #baumeetmercier . Based on our CALIBER I, we have still made some modification. The distance from the minute wheel to the second wheel is downsized to gain room for additional indications on subdials. We also reconstructed the winding mechanism so that the date, the month and the declination indication can be set as fast as possible with the help of a third crown position. The complete mechanism for the calendar indication is carried by an additional plate which is only 1.5 mm high. One specialty which is not immediately visible is the rapid change of the date and day of the week that is activated at midnight exactly. The importance that the the dial of a watch bears for collectors cannot be overstated. For the wearer and the observer, it is the face of the watch and, very likely, what originates an emotional reaction towards the piece. It is commonly acccepted, particularly amongst vintage collectors, auction houses and dealers, that a very high percentage of the value of a timepiece is to be attributed to the beauty, condition and rarity of its dial. Indeed, the work, craftsmanship, tradition, savoir-faire and design that goes into dial manufacture is what justifies what otherwise seems unreasonable market prices. Of all dial manufacturers of the Twentieth Century, perhaps there is none more relevant or storied than Stern Frers / Stern Creations, which supplied dials to the most emblematic of manufactures during the golden 1940s through 1970s, including Rolex, Vacheron Constantin, Audemars Piguet and, of course, Patek Philippe, among others. “Le Cadran – Visage de la Montre Bracelet au 20e Siecle” by the legendary Dr. Helmut Crott is a must have book for any horological library. It is dedicated to the history, the creation process, including methods, materials and techniques, and the most beautiful dial examples by this icon of the Swiss cultural heritage. The quality of the book’s manufacture, the breadth and depth of the shared knowledge, the beauty of the images and style in prose (although only a French version is available) does absolute justice to both the incredible history of Stern Freres and to its stunning creations. I like a watch to be very simple in appearance. I don’t like complications on the dial. The dial is for the hands, and the complication is for the back of the watch. Everything here is made with aesthetics above all else. ORIGINS OF THE UNIVERSAL GENÈVE TRI-COMPAX – The story of the Tri-Compax is somewhat jumbled up. Starting with the year of its release – 1944 – which was a particularly tumultuous year for the world. D-Day, the liberation of Paris and Guam, and Iwo Jima, were just some of the wild ongoings of 1944. . Also, in 1944, over in neutral Switzerland, Baselworld was alive and well. That year, at the famous trade fair, Universal Genève released the Tri-Compax, right at the end of the Second World War. . The Tri-Compax is part of the wider Compax collection from Universal Genève, which started up in 1936 with the Compax (although the similar Compur was released a couple years earlier). The Tri-Compax was the pinnacle of the Compax collection and is named after its three functions of calendar, chronograph, and moonphase. It was a technical marvel upon its release and a successful watch for the brand. Early models used the Universal Genève Cal. 287 and 481, which were modified Martel movements, also shared with Zenith at the time. It is worthwhile to note that the Cal. 287 is supposed to be the same as the Zenith Cal. 156, while the Universal Genève Cal. 481 is based off of the earlier Cal. 281; which would coincide with the Zenith 122. Zenith would have been a customer of Universal Genève at the time, who had a close and uncertain relationship with Martel. Although it is clear that Martel made movements for Universal Genève, it must be said that Martel’s role in Universal Genève’s movement making has been a point of contention and confusion. Some sources indicate that Universal Genève’s chronograph production was entirely in-house throughout the 1930s and 1940s…but patents (retrieved from a famous Watchuseek thread) show otherwise. Moreover, it is possible that Universal Genève held stock of Martel’s or may have had an exclusive deal for their chronograph movements. In any event, the key fact is that Martel did make movements for Universal Genève…Full story on our website! . Back when I was thinking of buying this watch I was faced with a few competitors. For a start, the mighty Datograph that Ive always had tremendous respect for but was ruled out for not being exclusive enough, and for a dial that wasnt as interesting (the original Dato at the time). Of course, all relative. . Second was the F.P.Journe Octa Calendrier which had just been discontinued and is still one of the most beautiful dials I think FP ever designed. I also ruled it out under the idea that it was although beautiful, it was still just another annual calendar. Every other brand makes the same complication albeit not as beautifully executed. . Ultimately, the Centigraphe got the top prize because nobody else managed to construct such a unique chronograph with such a strong identity, unmatched, and still retaining precise chronometry specs.
