Well I’m 47 years old today! I had the absolute best birthday with starting with a call from Cameron asking if I would come help him bathe Remy and I jumped up and ran over there. Then I walked in to the salon with a surprise of Hunter, Cameron, Don and my barbers waiting to surprise me and y’all I got the motorcycle. It’s a 67 Triumph and it will just be displayed in the window at Barbour 3 and nobody is gonna drive it lol. I then had a great lunch with my mom. My friends, family and all my amazing staff made me feel so special. I even got a Baskin Robbins ice cream cake and cinnamon rolls. Y’all all know how to make a birthday special. I made a lot of big plans this year when we found out this little guy was on the way. One of those was closing the business I spent 15 years building. I carefully crafted that plan to impact as few clients as possible and to finish just as this guy made his big debut. Then Covid19 happened and all the plans came crashing down in a matter of days. I still have clients scattered through fall when I planned to be back to working full time in a whole other industry, I lost my other job I loved dearly. We found out we’d have to deliver our little man early due to health concerns...right in the middle of our projected peak pandemic. For those struggling and my amazing clients grieving their wedding plans- sometimes there’s beauty in the chaos. I had to “lean into it” and actually put into practice all the positive thinking I always claimed to follow while in reality I controlled and fought any amount of chaos so everything could be as smooth as can be and worried about everything all the time. There is beauty in the chaos and peace in letting go. For me I’m learning to be grateful to all of this. It brought 6 pounds 7 ounces of joy into our lives at a time where we have no choice but to huddle together and spend all the time in the world protecting him and watching him grow. There’s no deadline, no new job start on the horizon-just us. This one’s for all the black and brown junior and leaving cert students who are going to have to accept final results from their white teachers who may have never truly seen them. Since there’s no public examinations, teachers will be deciding on a final grade for their students. This is terrifying to me and I’m sending y’all love and support. I’ve had teachers give me lower marks than white students who COPIED MY WORK, punish me unfairly over other students and isolate me in their classrooms, one guy never allowed me to sit beside anybody and would painstakingly look through every line of my maths homework, find a mistake and humiliate me in front of the other students. I also had teachers who believed in me and encouraged me - so I know it’s possible to do this! I chose to study astrophysics in college because I think the universe is dope and I always wanted to understand the physics that describes it. But I also chose astrophysics so nobody could ever tell me that I was stupid, or lazy, or a troublemaker. As if I had to prove my worth in the world via western institutions! As a teacher in uni now, I have the privilege of teaching in classrooms that are really diverse. Sadly what I’ve learned from my students is that discrimination in the classroom is the exact same as when I was in school. In some cases it’s actually worse. I’m fittin to start my own school. Where we teach students the work of African writers, inventors, musicians, physicists, astronomers, zoologists, botanists and philosophers. There is so much to learn from the great thinkers of Africa and the African Diaspora. It would be a shame to deprive our kids of that wealth of knowledge. This school would be welcome to everyone, because in my opinion, we have ALL been deprived of a globally complete education, not just black ppl. ☀️PART THREE☀️ -see last posts for part 1&2- Caution: May be triggering if youre sensitive to traumatic birth stories. At some point, the strong parallels between Dads questions & my responding prayers caused the memories of W’s birth to come searing to the surface of my mind. All of a sudden, I had the answer I had been waiting to understand for years ... the answer to why I had to go through that birth experience that my dr later told me was worse than 90% of the births she oversaw. It was for this moment - so I would have rock-solid certainty of what to do. Through sobs, I told Dad, God is with us right now. I know its hard to feel Him because Ive been where you are. I dont know why there has to be so much pain but one thing I am sure of is that God never leaves our sides, even if we think He has. I know because I wanted to die so much when I was giving birth & pleaded with God to take me Home. I wrestled with trying to understand why He let me go through that but I think it was all for this moment right now. I feel His presence & know He is with us, Dad. Lord, please lift my Dads pain & give us a huge sign of Your abundant presence & light. I prayed that over and over & within minutes, my Dad rolled over, sat up, devoid of pain, & told us he was going to watch tv. I sat there, alone, dumbfounded, until it clicked. That’s when I ran out to my Dad and praised Jesus for the answered prayer. Shortly after, I backed down the drive and saw an incredible full rainbow over my parents house, ending right in Dads bedroom - another answer to my prayer for a sign of His presence and light and which gloriously illustrates the Biblical promise that God *never* abandons His children. God took the two most intense trials of my life, beautifully intertwined them & created so much purpose & beauty from both. He will do the same in your life, too, if you let Him in. I have so much peace with my birth story because the question that nagged me for years has been answered. God used my pain to strengthen my faith so that I could be a rock for Dad in my faith. The evolution of parenthood. You can see on my face, from panic to peace. For all you first time moms and dads out there, I have a message. It gets so much easier....but also it never gets easier....and also it gets harder. A lot harder. But every day is easier! Except when theyre not. Parenthood becomes a routine that you can predict and work through, unless its one of those days that is unpredictable. I may not know anything but the one thing I do know is that it is amazing and rewarding and the best thing Ive ever done, but some days you go to sleep tired and feeling unrewarded. Also poop! This mum has been given the surprise of a lifetime. When Lyndsey Altice went into labour, she couldnt wait to meet her first baby daughter. Little did she know her baby girl had company. Just two minutes after giving birth to Ada Maze she was informed her sister, Billie June, would also be entering the world. Well its been two weeks since we left the hospital with our little Anslee Jo and its been more amazing than I could have ever imagined. She is perfect and has went from 5lbs 11oz up to 6lbs 6oz. The whole experience has flipped my world upside down and given me such a different respect for my wife. Its like Im married to my childhood hero!!! I could write a book on this beautiful woman but It still wouldnt give you an idea of how incredible she is and anyone who has ever met her knows what Im talking about. She just glows.... Everything about her is so unique. There is no one like her. The way she speaks, her laugh, her smile, her jokes, Ive never loved anything like I love her. To choose to have our baby completely natural blowed my mind and to watch her through every second of this process took me through emotions I could never explain. It was unbelievable. It was really more of a comedy act than a delivery hahaha everybody was laughing or crying no in between!! Im so glad I found that exciting, loving, hilarious, hurry home from and sometimes call in to work cause I just want to spend the day with you marriage!!! ‘My mom was diagnosed with Primary Biliary Cholangitis (PBC) when she was 37 years old. PBC is a disease of the bile ducts that leads to eventual cirrhosis of the liver. There is no cure for her disease, but years of trial drugs slowed its progression. In October of 2017, my moms disease had progressed enough that she was placed on the transplant list. The day she was placed on the list I called and requested to be tested as a possible donor. After months of testing & imaging, I was approved as a donor at the end of February 2018. 10 days later, on March 6, 2018, I donated 59% of my liver to my mom. The surgery was a huge success. I was home after 5 days, she was home after 10. The day after surgery her symptoms were gone and she felt better than she could remember feeling in a long time. Recovery was hard, but we leaned on and supported each other. It has almost been a year and my mom remains infection, rejection and complication free ❤️ I am also now 7 months pregnant with our first baby, and my moms third grand baby! DIABETES, OBESITY &🤰🏾 I’m not going to lie, Dr. Linda Barbour’s CEU presentation on diabetes and pregnancy was terrifying. It definitely added fuel to my fire. Hang tight. First, the scary stats: - 2/3 of pregnant women are overweight/obese: ⬆️risk for GDM, DM2, DM1 with insulin resistance - 1/10 of infants & toddlers are obese 😭 - 1/5 of youth are obese 😢 Maternal obesity, DM, glucose & lipids are associated with toddlers being obese at 2-3 yo.😳 Babies can already have fatty liver from a metabolically unhealthy intrauterine environment.🤭 Is anyone else hyperventilating yet? Yes, obesity is the leading cause of maternal/newborn mortality. But here’s the thing, no matter where you are now, we can make things look better for you & your future & your babies. We need to start treating our whole community so our moms are healthy, make healthy babies to change our vicious cycle of poor health into generations that thrive. IT IS UP TO ALL OF US TO IMPROVE THESE STATISTICS. We are all connected and together we can do this! Prevention starts now for every single person on this planet & every single person joining us here in the future. The narrative around food & lifestyle needs to change. Healthy is cool & fun, I promise! It is contagious. We need to stop marketing quick fixes because we know health comes from consistent behaviors over the long term. We need to role model healthy behaviors for those around us. Healthcare providers, we have to live healthfully to inspire our patients. “Do as I say, not as I do,” does not work. I just told a patient with diabetes about intermittent fasting this AM; I told him the different options and that I do 16:8 & he said, “Ok, I’ll do it just how you do it, Doc.” It took 0 seconds to convince him. He’s dropped his A1c nearly 2% in less than 3 months with lifestyle & no additional meds. Leading by example gives our patients a better shot. Please everyone self isolate, I spent 6days this week in hospital with my little girl and seriously everyone should take care of our NHS by #selfisolation to help slow the spread of Covid-19 We were in because she had a seizure and then another while we were in hospital, they isolated us just in case, luckily she tested negative to co-19 And is much better now. I wasnt going to post this but Ive been hearing that people are still going out more then they need to. Being isolated in hospital is no joke! the NHS staff are amazing but stretched. People who know me would say that I am the most optimistic person. But I have to say after spending almost a week in hospital I am concerned. 7 years. 7 years of trials, doubts and bumps in the road. When I look back at our journey of trying to become parents I can’t help but to be thankful for each step of the journey. Everything that we have gone through has led us to be more patient, more hopeful, and more trusting of letting go of the things we have no control over. They are lessons that we continue to learn each day. To my wife: seeing your quiet strength, selflessness and bravery makes me so proud to be your husband. Our children are blessed to have you model these things to them as they learn and grow. To our new babies: Welcome to the world! Our prayer for you is that you will grow. Grow physically, but also grow in love, empathy and kindness. Grow in wisdom, character, patience and joy. These things will equip you to face the hardship this world will throw at you. Mommy and Daddy love you so much. The first half of 2020 has been filled with fear, anxiety, anger and despair. But through the darkest times there is hope. A hope not simply for the desires of our heart, but a deeper hope that there is more than what we can see in front of us, things that are well beyond our control. Our hope is not just for a better world for our children, but that they will grow to be builders of that change, and ultimately, grow to know the source of all hope. Just one day after I complained about being pregnant for too long, my babe made her grand entrance.😆Every mom can understand the relief, exhaustion and pure love I’m feeling in this photo, captured minutes after birth. She came within 4 hours of us getting to the hospital, I almost ran out of time to get the epidural but did in the end — only to have it kick in for about 20 mins as I pushed her out (not enough pain relief!) The contractions were even worse and more intense than my first labour, and I remember thinking ‘I don’t know if I have the strength to do this today’ but I womaned-up and my body did the rest of the work when my mind felt weak. It’s really amazing what we’re capable of as women. I’m so happy she’s here, and I’ll be squeezing her like this forever.❤️ - @mombosspodcast on Instagram

But during the #ultrasound appointment, doctors informed her that Valery had a #cleftlip. “We left the clinic feeling like it was a bad dream. I couldn’t accept it,” she said. A huge benefit of breastfeeding is that breastfed babies are less likely to catch or develop infections, and if they do, they are likely to recover more easily. Breastmilk is a live product full of antibodies and other stuff designed to help boost a babys immune system. Because breastmilk is a live substance, it can change according to your babys needs. If a mother is exposed to an infection she will start producing antibodies against it, and pass these on to her baby through her breastmilk. This means that a baby will get a dose of antibodies too, to help them fight off the infection. These antibodies are one of the main reasons why any breastmilk is better than no breastmilk, and why continuing to breastfeed your baby once they are eating solid foods and past the first year continues to offer protection for them over and above nutrients in the milk.
