The Liberty Bell is known throughout the world, but few are familiar with the Women’s Liberty Bell. Known as the Justice Bell, it was commissioned by suffragist Katharine W. Ruschenberger of Chester County, PA in 1915 to be used on a speaking tour promoting a state referendum for women’s suffrage. The bell was driven through all 67 counties in Pennsylvania in the bed of a pickup truck with a banner promoting “Votes For Women” draped across the tailgate throughout 1915. Each stop included speakers, and in many cases, parades promoting suffrage. A second tour in 1920 ended at Independence Hall on September 25, 1920 when the clapper, which had been chained to the bell to further symbolize the lack of equal rights to women, was unchained and the bell was rung for the first time to mark the adoption of the 19th Amendment. The more of us who fill out the census, the more money we get for NYC’s schools, roads, bridges, health care, housing, and more. Complete it in less than 10 minutes at https://my2020census.gov/. #GetCountedNYC An 1890 copy of Scientific American illustrates how counting the 11th census was accomplished in less time with the Punched Card Tabulator system invented by Herman Hollerith, a former census employee from Buffalo, New York. Divided into four devices for perforating, reading, and sorting, workers completed 62.9 million returns of 30 questions in less than five years. Rainy days in NYC always remind us of this Martin Munkácsi photo, taken for Harper’s Bazaar in 1934, and Richard Avedon’s later homage to it for the magazine in 1957. A reminder that rainy days (and puddle jumping) can still be glamorous. - @bunnywilliams_interiordesign on Instagram

- [early 1920s] My grandmother used to dive off the steamers bringing NY vacationers from the train station to summer houses around the lake in NH. It shocked people because (1) her knees and arms were uncovered, (2) she was a woman who could swim & dive, and (3) she dared to dive from such a height.

WOMENS (BIKE) HISTORY: 3 DAYS, 5 WOMEN, 250 MILES #TBT by Carolyn Szczepanski Decades before AIDS Rides, Critical Mass, Tweed Rides and more, five women embarked on a group ride from New York City to Washington, D.C. during Easter weekend in 1928. Yes, 1928! These five New Yorkers — Marylou Jackson, Velma Jackson, Ethyl Miller, Leolya Nelson and Constance White — biked 250 miles over three days. On the first day of their ride, they biked 110 miles to Philadelphia. The second day, they biked 40 miles to Wilmington, Delaware. The third and final day, they biked more than 100 miles, arriving in Washington, D.C. around 9pm. Once in D.C., they did some sightseeing around the National Mall and @howard1867. They also took time to have the above photograph taken. I love how they sit so confidently on their bicycles, resplendent in their leather jackets, caps, bloomers and stylish socks. When asked what motivated them to embark on the group ride, they responded that they were motivated by “the love of the great-out-of-doors” that each of them cherished. Interestingly, they also challenged other young women, 21 years old and older, to replicate their trip in less time. What are we to make of this challenge, the professed love for “outdoor” culture and the trip, in general? And what was happening in 1928 that provides a context for the ride? Continue reading, check the link on our bio and at https://bikeleague.org/content/womens-bike-history-3-days-5-women-250-miles - @bicycle_nomad on Instagram

Happy World Bicycle Day! This photo shows Pasadena resident George Frost poses with a “High Wheel” bicycle. Popular in the late 19th century, High Wheels phased out with the coming of modern “safety” bicycles, whose appeal came from the reduced danger of falling from a great height.
