18 facts for parents of newborns 1) There will be sleepless nights. But it does get better. Usually by 1-2 months. 2) Grunting and straining are mostly normal. If seems like true pain, contact your doctor. 3) Diaper rash will happen. Have Vaseline or diaper cream on hand. If it doesn’t work might be yeast. 4) White patches in the mouth that can’t be rubbed off can be thrush. Need treatment from your doctor. 5) We take fever realky seriously in this age. Anything over 100, call you doctor. 6) Spitting up can be normal. If every feed and forceful or pain associated, call you doctor. 7) Feed on demand at first. It will give baby practice (breast or formula fed) and get milk supply in. 😎 Watch for yellow to the eyes and skin. If significantly yellow or not feeding well, it’s more concerning. 9) You can supplement a baby with formula and still have a successful breastfeeding journey. We don’t have to rush to it but sometimes it helps. 10) Get advice from family and friends you trust. Ok to ignore the rest. Don’t ask on social media. 11) Spend lots of time talking, singing and reading to your newborn. It’s probably the single most important thing you can do for their development. 12) Place them to sleep in a boring crib. Someone will tell you that they’ll sleep better on their tummy. Ignore that person. 13) Every week is a new phase. Be flexibility where you can. If you hate this phase, there’s always next week. 14) it’s a lonely and hard time to be a newborn parent right now. Cut yourself some slack if not everything is going as you planned. 15) It’s ok to not love the newborn period. It doesn’t make you a bad parent. 16) Some sadness with new baby can be normal. But if it feels too much or lasts longer than a few weeks, talk to your doctor. 17) All parents should be allowed to make their own choices. No one does everything the same.
