This gon be long; you’re forewarned. I started officially touring with mom & auntie in 09. Gigs with them supplemented my income to pay for grad school. It was perfect cuz my thesis was on rap music’s role in Black adolescent identity formation and, to study the youngest form of Black music (rap), I had to study the music that created it. Hence, touring with The Emotions gave me interviews with The Stylistics, Blue Magic, New Birth, The Blue Notes, Cuba Sr (my biggest fan/advocate on the road), Billy Paul, The Delfonics, Brothers Johnson, The ChiLites & Ray Goodman & Brown (there were others but this is all I can recall without lookin at notes). This journey with the two giants pictured grew me TF up. Like FAST. Hearing for harmonies & blends, learning how to SANG and not over sing beautiful melodies (that has a whole other point I’ll tell y’all about later), & how to straddle the combo of elegance and powerhouse. I could never replace Auntie Sheila and never desired to; I wanted to give fans the closest thing to what she gave as not to tamper with the precious memories they made to songs like Don’t Ask My Neighbor and Show Me How. Auntie Pam rode for me. She would hang with me so I wouldn’t eat alone—even as she fell asleep at the table. She would make us LAAAUUUGGH cuz she was so gullible, we’d play ALL the pranks on her—and she let us 😌. Man...jus writing this, some bomb stories flooded my memory. I didn’t wanna write this cuz I almost felt it would close the door on her in some way. Like, the closure would make me pop up and just “doodoop doodoop WOW” without her (“best of my love” reference for the ones in the back 😩). But, nah...this post just called more dope memories to comfort me as I miss her. I appreciate all the gigs she showed up to past her bedtime for me; I KEEP the family doin stuff they didn’t ask to LOL. But, yeah...this all I got. I love u, Auntie. My second album is 17 today!!! - Feel old yet??!! Did you know it was released 3 times, hence the different covers? Each time they added or changed something. But today is the official release date x Thought I’d give you some interesting facts about the videos for the singles I released!! • •BOUT: This video is actually the second attempt as the first one was a mess 😩 It was my first video after having Téja and I was super self conscious. Rah Digga was actually In the first video, but wasn’t available the second time around 🤦🏾‍♀️ • •SUPERSTAR - I didn’t want to record superstar as it was a cover of the Danish pop idol’s winning song. Subsequently, Denmark boycotted me. Don’t think I’ve ever charted there with anything 😩 It’s a bit mad, because I love Denmark...really beautiful place ❤️ • •THANK YOU - I wrote this title track after an argument, it began as “F*ck You” and I decided to change it to “Thank You” once I’d calmed down 😭 Also, I chose this video director because he also did Mary J Blige’s “I’m Going Down” video🤗 • •SEE IT IN A BOYS EYES - My favourite ever video, we shot this in Cuba. My “love interest” on this video asked me to marry him. He was dead serious 😳 I said no. • •DJ - This wasn’t supposed to be a serious single. It was a “double a side” with a cover I did for Bridget Jones diary, Surprisingly, it became my 4th consecutive top 10 spending 12 weeks on the charts! • • Feel free to stream/download buy etc. As of LAST year, I finally started to receive my royalties...long story short the record industry are crooks, but that’s a WHOLE other story...❤️ • • I want to thank anyone who bought this album or any of my songs. I realized quickly that her outer beauty was nothing in comparison to her inner beauty.
