I took it about 12 years ago on a 5 megapixel camera. I still remember to this day sitting down and trying to find a way to force the camera to have a longer exposure time. Who saw the (shock)ingly rare Bay Area thunderstorm this weekend? 😜✋🏻 It had this Midwest guy feeling right at home. Share your story in the comments! @noahfrenchmustard and I saw this rolling in over the ocean Saturday night while up on a ridge at Big Sur. We were planning on shooting the Perseids meteor shower that night, but seeing this storm was jaw dropping and we quickly pulled out our zoom lenses before packing up to dodge the rain Turns out its hard to zoom in on a storm thats a few miles away when its pitch black, getting this in frame involved tons of trial and error while slowly zooming in. The shot is a composite of two 2 minute exposures capturing multiple lightning strikes in each. I hadnt shot lightning before this night, and now Im hooked What made the moment truly spectacular though was how the Milky Way was directly above the storm clouds. We finally had our first decent line of storms track over the South East coast of Queensland on Thursday with some semi decent structure and a few CGs thrown in for good measure. I headed out to Woody Point jetty as they tend to shelf up nicely once they hit the sea breeze and I didn’t fancy driving too far in peak hour traffic risking getting caught under it. I was pretty happy to capture a few frames with bolts backlit through the rain curtain but was hoping for more to be honest after last years poor season. I think part of the reason for not feeling overly excited about how things unfolded was also the sad reminder that this will be our first season without our inspirational mate Dale. Half the fun of storm chasing over the last few years was having the big fella standing next to us to share the stoke. We all miss his larger than life persona, his ever smiling face and all round shit stirring and level 11 frothing!! 😂😂 This one’s for you brother, I know you’re looking down on us every time the radar lights up. Smell that? Mmmm Storms are in the air again and with La Niña kicking in there is potential for a good season ahead! I’ve been getting my fix recently watching @mikeolbinski the guru of time lapses and @pecoshank who pulls mad handbrake turns in the face of tornados on YouTube. If you enjoy storms check out these fellas work! With a big front forecast to deliver strong storms across central NSW it was questionable in the Days leading up whether anything would make the coast. The chances slightly improved as the day progressed and it looked like being a night time affair if they did. Before 8:30pm I noticed some lightning activity picking up around Camden and could see something coming together on radar. I didn’t need much more than a sniff of a storm and out the door I went down to a vantage point by the water hoping to catch some sweet reflections. Certainly scored some cranking CG’s as it maxed out and then dissipated as it moved out to sea.
