Mirzakhani received the Fields Medal, a prestigious mathematics award, in 2014. She became the first woman and the first Iranian to receive this prize. A privileged royal woman, a relative of the ruler - Sultana (not her real name) has a fiery spirit that exhausts her family - an uncaring and domineering father, an acquiescant mother, soft sweet sisters and a monstrous brother. Her portrait of Saudi Arabia in the 80s to 2000s is saddening as you realise that even the richest of the female sex has no chance at independence. She sketches a society where men lust over women they brand as whores. As Sultana describes it, Any man is better an a Saudi man. Where young sons rule the lives of their mothers, where women are mutilated to prevent any joy of sex and any sort of ambition is squashed if its origin is female - Sultana wishes to live on her own terms. She talks about her childhood, her intense hatred of her brother, her complicated relationship with a father who seems, at best, uninterested and talks with incredible honesty of her own apathy of the struggle of migrant workers (women) in her country. Her servants recount the horrors they know of and she steps into her own set of horrors when she decides to marry Kareem. An English educated lawyer who wanted a woman who knew her own mind, it seemed to good to be true for Sultana to have a husband like that...and soon, she realises that there are Saudi Male qualities about him she cannot change and she did not recognise earlier. Its an incredible swift tale, where you wont have a minute to breath, where your despair will push you further into the book and will leave you wondering about the women who live this reality.
