Creature Feature: Virginia Opossum Generally known as a possum, the Virginia Opossum is a living fossil in that its ancestors have been found to have existed 20 million years ago! Its name comes from the Powhatan language when the English established the Jamestown colony in Virginia in the early 1600’s. As our only native marsupial, opossum babies, after birth, grow in the female’s belly pouch, like a kangaroo. It has a widely varied diet, and eats just about anything, including seeds, birds, fruits, reptiles, an array of insects, including ticks, and even dead animals (carrion). Possums also possess a prehensile tail, which means they can use their tail as a hand and are thus able to hang upside down on a branch. Mother possum carries young ones on her back. They have short life spans, living only a couple of years. Possums are highly adaptable and may be seen in urban as well as rural areas. Some older individuals are immune to the bites of venomous snakes and may even eat the attacker. They have an interesting method to ward off predators such as owls: they play dead. When “playing possum,” these animals will fall to the ground, lay still and bare their teeth. They even secrete a very bad smell to make it seem they are too nasty to consume. There can be few creatures more synonymous with the place they live, than ring-tailed lemurs are with Madagascar. Perhaps more than any other species they are emblematic of their island home. But as far as lemurs are concerned they are far from typical. All other lemurs (and there are over 100 species) are arboreal, but ring-tails spend a large proportion of time on the ground. They also live in larger groups, sometimes over 20 strong. Females give birth in late August / September with young being carried on the mothers tummy for the first two weeks. Once a little older infants ride like miniature jockeys on their mothers’ back. Like all lemurs, ring-tails are endangered and severely threatened by the ongoing destruction of their forests in southern Madagascar. Work on the new edition of Mammals of Madagascar continues. I’ve recently been researching the latest work on nocturnal dwarf lemurs, genus Cheirogaleus. So here are a couple of interesting facts. They are the only group of primates compelled to hibernate, in their case over the austral winter (May-October). Prior to the dormant period they eat large quantities of high calorific foods, mainly fatty fruits and berries and consequently lay down significant fat reserves. Much of this fat is stored in the tail. At the beginning of dormancy, this fat-tailed dwarf lemur might weigh twice as much as it does when it eventually emerges from hibernation some five months later. This photo was taken shortly after the lemur had emerged and its obvious how ‘thin’ the tail is, with all fat reserves depleted.
