Honoring and celebrating the beauty of every individual that sits in my chair is not only one of the pillars of my business, it’s one of my personal values. As a Black woman I have spent a lo of my career uncomfortably laughing off racist and insensitive jokes in the middle of bookings. I have overheard people talk about minorities and whisper when they realize a black person is in the room. Prior to starting my own business, I worked and managed another company. A client played some hip hop music and someone said “Will you turn that [N-word] music off?!” The room went silent and the client looked at me with eyes WIDE open to see what I was going to do. I kept working. I didn’t know what to do. I smiled and fought back the mix of anger, embarrassment, and sadness filling my belly as I artfully applied her lashes. I knew that feeling. It was the feeling of being dehumanized. On a job. On the happiest day of a someone’s life. I had to suck it up and keep moving. When that booking wrapped I cried in my car. I called my boss and asked to add anti-abuse clauses to the contract. I wanted to be protected. I wanted other artists of color and orientations and backgrounds to feel protected. I wanted, more than anything, to know that my leader had my back and would go to bat for me. That anti abuse clause was never added. So when I started my own business, it was the first thing I added. Racial, homophobic, and xenophobic rhetoric is NOT tolerated at my business. Not only for my own protection and safety but for that of the artists who currently work with me and who will work with me in the future. When I did eventually leave that other company, on what I thought were great terms, that same company owner referred to me as “ghetto” when my name was brought up. She could not say I was disorganized bc I am not. She could not say that I’m not a great artist, bc I AM. She could not say that I am not capable bc I AM. So she weaponized my blackness. If youve been educating yourself but havent taken action, now is the time. Educate yourself, then educate others. Ask your white friends 👋, LISTEN to your POC friends. Lift up black voices. Check in on your neighbors. Donate money. Call your reps. VOTE. Demand budget reform. March, protest, get heartbroken, get mad. Get strategic, get strong and resilient. Get connected to organizations and folks doing racial justice work. I hate to break the news, but there is no quick way, quick fix, quick anything that will get you booked up and busy over night. It’s just doesn’t happen, not in this industry. . . There is a misconception of coming out of school and being a fully booked stylist in two seconds flat. And this leads to many stylists starting out in this business, not seeing the results they THINK they should. So guess what? They leave the industry. Or They start working two jobs because they have to supplement their income. And then they get frustrated because they paid a mint for school and they now have to work a second job... We can’t have this anymore! . . Let me give you the real real! Now every stylist grows at a different rate but on average it can take at LEAST 2-3 YEARS behind the chair to build a solid book on clients. This is also by staying in the same salon. And all along the way you are just grinding it out. We have all been there as new artists, including me. . . Here are some tips to help you stay on track! . 1. Be consistent in the way you grow your business. If it’s insta you focus on. Be sure you know your target client and consistently share content that is geared toward them. . 2. Find a mentor and watch what they do. Become a sponge and soak in all the goodness. Education and more education! If you need one I got you. . 3. Put in the extra work. Stay late. Come in early. Say yes to free opportunities like photo shoots. . 4. Believe In yourself. Believe in your talent. And don’t ever give up in your dreams. The timeline may be a little different than you thought. But be flexible. As long as you see forward progress you are good to go! . 5. Last but not least.... Don’t compare your journey to anyone else’s.
