Deep in the forests of Wallowa County, Oregon, was Maxville. Founded by the Missouri-based Bowman-Hicks Lumber Company in 1923, it was unlike most logging towns in the Pacific Northwest in that it allowed Black people to work and live among White people. • Alongside White men, Black men hewed timber and raised their families in the same area despite Oregon’s exclusionary law, which, until its repeal in 1926, prohibited Blacks from residing in the state. This law specified that “it shall not be lawful for any negro or mulatto to enter into, or reside” in Oregon, with exceptions made for those who were already in the territory. • By the mid-1920s, Maxville blossomed into a community of 400 citizens becoming the largest town in the county. The town contained a post office, medical dispensary, company store, hotel, and a blacksmith. While logging in the woodlands, the men intermixed, but Jim Crow laws were enforced once back in town. In leisure, baseball brought them all together as they played on both segregated and integrated teams, which even led them to a tournament win. • Toward the ‘30s, the Great Depression ravaged the lumber industry, contributing to the town’s decline, which led to Maxville’s eventually closing in 1933. Residents migrated to neighboring states, albeit some lingered. A blizzard years later destroyed the remaining structures and saw the last people leave. • However, what has been a ghost town since will now have its memory maintained in posterity thanks to the efforts pioneered by Gwen Trice, a descendant of one of the original Black loggers, and founder of the Maxville Heritage Interpretive Center in Joseph, Oregon. • Read the full story of those spirited loggers in the Filson Journal. The ginger brew itself tastes like a spiced apple cider, but then the fresh ginger reinforced the spicy ginger brew notes, and the orange juice cuts some of the sweetness of the cider. It’s amazing. THE HIGHLIGHT: Nothing gives me a greater thrill than laying in a well placed thick blot of white paint on top of a well defined facial feature and having it look like the light striking of that form. Why our brains don’t recognize it as a glob of white paint, and it’s transformed into something else, its a complete mystery to me. IN EVERY MEDIUM: In watercolors, it’s the part that you don’t paint becomes the highlight. With digital painting, you use the picker and get white or a very light color and make your marks. With acrylics, it’s about the same as oil paint but you can paint over an area without worry of the underlying paint mixing in. With charcoal, a nice sharp eraser can do the trick, and conte crayon, grab the white pencil. In the end, it’s the same mysterious shine on a moist or hard object catching the light. THE MECHANICS: You may feel disappointed when you try to paint a highlight, when it just blends in and just looks like more of the mud that you have been struggling with. Well the key is to keep your powder dry. You must make sure that everything else is a darker value, at least 2 or 3 shades darker so that when you place the highlight, it stands out. It should be the lightest light of your portrait. TARGET PRACTICE: The perfect setup of values makes absolutely no difference if you miss the mark. You have to place the highlight on just the right spot in the form, where the angle of the light would be bouncing into your eye. Take your time, or redo it, until you get it. WHERE ON THE FACE? The cheeks, the chin, the lips, the forehead, the ears. On the tip of the nose, this is called the Catch Light. It is the most common spot on the face to reflect because of the round nature of the tip and the smoothness of the skin. The eyes also, with their wetness can have a mirror like reflections. If the highlight is in the iris region of the eye, you can have the lightest light and the darkest dark together, creating a strong visual contrast, drawing our attention in. That with our brains natural response to eye contact, can be a powerful combination. Hopefully this tip is the highlight of your day. Apple Pie (American Classic Lattice Pie). 。 Flaky, buttery double-crusted pie with a tender filling of fresh apples and warm spices topped with a scoop of homemade vanilla ice cream. 。 Happy 4th of July to those celebrating in the United States! It is patriotic to notice the flaws in America and push it towards a better future, we need to understand problems like systemic racism. This year, I’m missing the usual get-togethers with extended family but this is a good day to hold those dear even closer. Americans usually celebrate the holiday with fireworks. For the science nerds in the foodie community, I realized the other day that fireworks are just the emitted photons from electrons dropping in valence shells. I love chemistry so this was a mini revelation to me hehe. 。 Tips:. - For a uniform and even crust, use a food processor to grind the dry ingredients and then add in cold butter chunks. The cold butter and cold water is necessary so the butter doesn’t become a paste with the flour and so it can be rolled out later. - Typically, tart apples such as Granny Smith and Golden Delicious are used but any apple variation works, just adjust the sweetness of your filling accordingly. - How quickly the dough is rolled affects the texture of the final pie crust. Rolling the dough while cold creates distinct layers which later give off steam and rise apart in the oven, resulting in the air pockets and flakiness. - The apple pie is done baking once the crust is golden and the filling is bubbling. - Vanilla ice cream can be easily made by whipping heavy cream to stiff peaks, folding in condensed milk and adding a few drops of vanilla extract. - @eatsfromyouth on Instagram

Each mask is made from repurposed vintage garments and lined with quilting cotton (recommended for masks because of its tight weave). The bottom hem of each mask is left open to allow for filter insert (HEPA or other) should you want to add for extra protection. The closure system is easy and simple, employing only a single shoelace—this allows you to customize the fit, remove the lace before washing the mask, and / or swap out the lace for a different one of your choosing. The top loop wraps around the back your head above your ears and the loose ends tie behind your neck. I make each mask myself using [extensively] pre-washed vintage garments and quilting cotton. THE BALVENIE TUN 1858 Batch 6, 52.3% and 2600 bottles 🇹🇼 . Released annually from 2012-2018, the Tun 1858 was similar to the 2010-2013 Tun 1401 in terms of vatting size. Batch 6 from 2017 is comprised of only nine casks - four sherry and five traditional oak. . I originally was going to keep this bottle for the collection, but life’s too short, and my brother-in-law’s birthday was as good an occasion as any to open it. But I’ll be honest, until the moment I peeled the seal off, I had a sense of apprehension - did I really want to open this now? And for him? 🤣 But with the cork out, there was a sense of relief, and then the anticipation of tasting it kicked in. . Now I know - this one is at the same level as the Tun 1401s I’ve tried. It’s very sherried like the 1401 Batch 8, which I just loved. Everyone including my BIL was blown away, which is my hope for any nice bottle I crack for family and friends. APPLE WEEK✨ hi friends! @cassiearnoldart here, and like most people, I’ve been venturing into homeschooling for the very first time. Unable to breathe while choking on a lunchtime wrap, Mike Russell remembers the scary feeling as he sat strapped into his wheelchair waiting for help. 🔒 Russell, 59, is a quadriplegic man who is paralyzed from the waist down and has very limited function below the neck. He requires around-the-clock care at Monarch House in west Windsor, run by Assisted Living of Southwestern Ontario. His acquired brain injury stems from a drug overdose in his 20s, which has led to these lifelong consequences. 🔒 At around 11:30 a.m. on July 9, a male nurse from Windsor Regional Hospital happened to be near Russell as he began choking. On Womens Equality Day, we commemorate the 100th anniversary of the adoption of the 19th Amendment as part of the United States Constitution, which secured for women the right to vote. . Although their role is not well documented, women have been a vital part of the Y movement for over 175 years! Below are a few notable roles that women have had in the YMCA movement: . -In the mid-1800s, women served in unpaid roles in the YMCA movement including volunteer teachers and fundraisers. . -During WWI, over 5,000 women worked in military canteens and many led units of female war workers and volunteers. . -The YMCA gave soldiers a place where they could get away from the harsh realities of the war. They organized canteens at the front lines in France. The huts or tents at the front lines were run by “Secretaries,” who provided writing materials, stock libraries, and sometimes, a gramophone and records. . -After the war, women were finally invited to join the YMCA as members and they began entering the Y workforce in higher numbers. . -In 1976, YMCA of the USA appointed Violet King Henry to Executive Director to its Organizational Development Group, making her the first woman named to a senior management position. - @lakelandymca on Instagram

Birthday week has me in my family feels. My Mother says I display the entrepreneurial spirit she saw in her father and grandfather. Both men were hugely successful; one starting and operating two hospitals for blacks and the other, publishing research and launching an internationally renowned clinical practice. I grew up hearing about the racial and business hurdles each confronted and their achievements. Their entrepreneurial drive and sacrifice didn’t become real until I started on my journey. Besides displaying flashes of my grandfathers relentless ambition, there is commonality in our entrepreneurial activities. As physicians, they were driven to solve patients physical maladies and help bodies heal. On the other hand, I form businesses which serve neighborhoods quality food & beverage and create events where family, friends, and acquaintances experience relaxation or celebration. The right to health care, the right to marry, the right to serve in the military, the right to choose or even using the damn bathroom! What the fuck is going on with this world and with people!? Losing a loved one, in this instance a beloved pet, is always hard. Helping kids understand the complex emotions surrounding death is dealt with so superbly in this picture book I’m a little embarrassed that we haven’t featured it sooner, as this poignant book was released last year. With gentle asides and humorous bits, we see the scope of human grief in this well wrought tale of how it feels and what is/is not appropriate to do when preparing to bury a pet in a backyard funeral. I was asked to elaborate on this story by many so here it is. My great grandma Marica was herded onto a train to a concentration camp in WW2 because she was Serbian. Some expert scientists came to a conclusion that based on research, black people and minorities were not just inferior but their genes were diseased, presenting a threat to the purity of others. All of a sudden, one had to have papers to prove they were “good enough”. Don’t be paranoid! - the Nazis said as they came to heard people on trains. Her husband was taken and put in another carriage with all the men. Once Marica was inside the train and it sped up, none of it felt right to her so she said to herself, I’m getting out of here. She managed to jump into reeds lining the fast moving river on a bend, stayed still until the train disappeared, then walked back to the “clean” neighbouring village where she hid her kids. She said afterward : I felt obliged to obey because everyone else was but then I thought: they don’t get to tell me where to go or when. She never saw her husband again. After the war ended and the Nazis were defeated, the Communist party took charge of the Balkans, joining all countries into Yugoslavia. The commie lackeys came knocking door to door collecting valuables from people for “everyone’s highest good”. When they got to Marica, they said: Aunty, what do you have that is valuable? She said, I have nothing. But we see that you have a cow there in the field- they questioned. Yes, but it is to feed my 2 children, without the milk, they will go hungry! - she cried out. They took the cow anyway. After this, she’d say: stay away from ideology, politicians and their minions, they are all dangerous and insane. She lived to nearly 100 years old, walking the cows out to pastures every day even in old age. She would’ve lived even longer had the Yugoslav war not started and she was uprooted from her land. I am 40, but I never embodied this family trauma until last year. It wasn’t talked about yet it is well known that we all epigenetically carry the pain of our ancestors. 📚Book Review 📚Thanks @clarksonpotter for the free copy for review. 🍑 Eat a Peach by David Chang w/ Gabe Ulla is raw, blunt, and way more revealing than I expected a cheffy memoir to be. And while it would be easy to just call it a chef memoir, it’s also intrinsically about a slice of the Asian American experience. 🍊 I have to applaud Chang’s frank discussion about his battle with depression. It’s just not a thing that’s talked about often in Asian American families. And in a time when a lot is finally coming out about abusive behavior by high profile chefs, I give credit to someone who owns their behavior and genuinely apologizes for it. It takes guts to be that vulnerable. 🍑 If you’re a fan or a #foodie, after reading the road to opening #Momofuku, you’ll immediately want to go back and grab the Momofuku cookbook and make a few dishes. Don’t look for recipes in this book, there aren’t any. 🍑 If you’re a cynic about celebrity chefs, well, then why are you reading this review? No, but seriously, if you’re a cynic, you might think, how do you have imposter syndrome after opening and running several restaurants, winning industry awards, having a hand in a couple of cookbooks, a magazine, and multiple TV shows? Call me both a fan and a cynic. 🍑 Despite the success, despite the advice his experience lets him dole out in 33 Rules for Becoming a Chef, my guess is Chang has often felt “I shouldn’t even be here,” let alone be this successful. Which might also explain the *one* thing that’s eyerolly about the book: the nonstop name dropping. 🍑 One last thing, Eat a Peach was set to come out in May 2020, but was held until September. Things are even more uncertain now in the restaurant industry than they were in the Spring. Whatever you do, don’t skip the Afterword, which was written during the pandemic. 🍎DIY APPLE PUZZLES🍎 A loves apples at the moment, she loves eating them, smelling them, seeing them in books and saying the word “apple”. These puzzles are a great way for her to identify the different characteristics seen in apples as she solves each one! They are perfect for the season and so easy to make! I think they turned out absolutely beautiful! 😍 🍏MATERIALS🍏 🍎Cardboard 🍎Mod Podge 🍎Free Apple Printout @littlesparketsy First, I cut out some cardboard into 3X3 squares. Next, I glued the printed apple image on top of the cardboard using a thin coat of mod podge underneath as well as on top of the image. Bursting BLUEBERRY YOGURT CAKE with vegan white chocolate. Because my kids love to pick their own blueberries and I love to make cake with these juicy sweet berries...and I even more love EATING IT! Hope you too! 🌱 The RECIPE 🌱Vegan blueberry yogurt cake with vegan white chocolate ⏺Ingredients •240 g / 2 cups all-purpose flour •40 g / 7 tablespoons almond flour •230 g / 1 cup vegan butter, at room temperature •200 g / 7/8 cups sugar •2 teaspoons baking powder •1 tablespoon lemon juice •200 g / 7 ounces vegan unsweetened yogurt (I used coconut yogurt) •4 tablespoons plant-based milk 200 g / 7 ounces blueberries ⏺Instructions 1️⃣Preheat oven to 350 °F / 180 °C. 2️⃣In a bowl combine sugar, soft vegan butter, vegan yogurt, lemon juice and plant-based milk. Mix with a high speed mixer for a few minutes until creamy and smooth. Add all-purpose flour, almond flour and baking powder and mix until smooth. Transfer to a cake pan (I used a 9 inch cake pan) and bake for about 1 hour. 4️⃣Allow to cool. Glaze cake with vegan white chocolate and decorate with more fresh blueberries, if desired. For once I was craving a dessert that wasn’t loaded with chocolate (something about the summertime heat i guess🤷🏽♀️🌞), and this strawberry shortcake hit the spot!👌🏼 The strawberries are so juicy and sweet this time of the year, definitely satisfied my sweet tooth😋 This recipe is paleo, gluten-free, and courtesy of @rachlmansfield 🌟 . #dEATS : 🍰 Crust Layer: -2 eggs -3 tablespoons liquid coconut oil -1 teaspoon vanilla extract -2 1/4 cup almond flour -1 teaspoon baking powder . 🍓Toppings: -1 container Siggis vanilla yogurt (my absolute all time fav @siggisdairy 😍) -2 cups organic strawberries (you can add other berries too!) . Instructions: -Heat oven to 350 degrees -Whisk together eggs, oil, maple syrup, and vanilla until smooth -Mix in almond flour and baking powder until smooth -Add to a round baking dish greased with oil and spread evenly -Bake for 15-18 min -Let it cool, then top with yogurt and sliced strawberries -Dig in!!🍓🍰😋 - @crumbfoodiewithme on Instagram
