Newly completed work for a happy family. For this project we removed existing dated and overgrown plantings and designed a low parterre hedge back with Hydrangea for the front of the residence and a new wider front steps and walk and of course beautifully clipped boxwood globes standing at attention along the new walkway. Less was more here as the landscape design should be in service of the architecture and the unique brick facade. Chic black trelliage leads to a hidden path overflowing with Hosta. Bess of Hardwick, the Countess of Shrewsbury, was an extraordinary woman - almost as durable and unforgiving as the gritstone of the Dark Peak in her native Derbyshire. She was business-savvy, acute, commanding, family-minded, successful in establishing both a material and dynastic legacy. Showing my age, I imagine her as Stephanie Beacham, or, at a pinch, Joan Collins in Alexis mode. Her marriages - four of them - were highly strategic in an age when - despite two Tudor queens - women’s room for manoeuvre was strictly curtailed. But in 1590, widowed from her estranged fourth husband, around seventy years old, enormously rich and fully independent at last, she started building her own great memorial. Hardwick Hall is fiercely disciplined in its plan and elevation, austere, but also gossamer-light with its vast expanse of glass, and her ES initials frilling the top. It’s the greatest of England’s prodigy houses - and that’s because her character, and surely too her gender, is everywhere expressed in it. A hard-nosed fairy-tale palace, a statement of wealth, of power, but can we also see Hardwick as feminine? All that clear glass, for example, was very expensive indeed, but, in this context, was its purity also read as expressive of female virtue (as it was when associated with the Virgin Mary for example)? Bess’s love of lavish textiles was hardly unusual in this period. But her choice of a rare monumental appliqué technique in commissioning hangings of the Virtuous Women of Antiquity is another example of a particular creative energy that seems generated by the need to be inventive in proclaiming her status as a female patron. Her sex was surely an element in the reading of the unusually large number of goddesses and female personifications who inhabit the house. She’s Diana, Venus and Ceres in her great reception room. She’s Penelope, Artemisia and Lucretia. And she’s the figures of Justice, Mercy and Charity sculpted over her fireplaces. Perhaps she was even the Virgin Mary, accepting the homage of the Kings - Bess’s favourite Christian subject. The day has finally come! After being closed for virtually 4 months the Visitor Centre is reopening again today! It will be open from 11am until 3pm today (Wednesday) and tomorrow this week, and the same again next week. Sometimes when we encounter hard moments in life, it can be calming to look at things from a new perspective. When Brandon showed me this picture of the backside of the pergola, it made me think how rarely we see it from this angle. The wisteria is in perfect bloom and it’s a peaceful reminder of the beauty around us 🌸 As we sit here 2+ months into quarantining, it’s hard to quiet the feelings of worry, uncertainty, sadness, etc. But when we quiet those voices (even for just a few moments), we make room for stories of hope and love all around us ❤️ We see that the very act of quarantining is an act of love towards our loved ones, our neighbors, our first responders and healthcare workers, and our community. We appreciate the beautiful gifts of sunshine, fresh air, and family time. The day I decided to make a return visit to the lovely village of Badminton, it was like a monsoon, crazy wind and and driving rain (Yuk)..Sheltering in the prettiest flower covered cottage porch were three sweet little cats, all looking at me with disdain, most probably thinking ‘Stupid Human’.. In my defence though I did have a rather stylish sturdy rainbow umbrella.. . Badminton is famous for its annual Horse Trials on The Estate.. The village is a gorgeous mix of Cotswold Stone cottages, and houses painted in rather a unique Orange (I seem to be attracted to this colour at the moment)..This was my most favourite cottage in the village, a complete zesty burst of fairytale.. . Das ging deutlich schneller, als geplant: Kaum 1,5 Jahre ist es her, als Oberbürgermeister Markus Lewe mit einem symbolischen Baggerbiss den Startschuss für die Arbeiten auf dem Gelände der ehemligen York-Kaserne gab. Jetzt konnte der Oberbürgermeister dort das erste fertige Teilprojekt begutachten, denn vor wenigen Wochen hat die vom Deutschen Roten Kreuz betriebene Kindertageseinrichtung ihre Pforten geöffnet. 150 Kinder finden in dem kernsanierten und denkmalgeschützten Gebäude mit neuem Anbau Platz zum Spielen und Freundetreffen. Zudem befinden sich in dem Gebäude auch die neuen Jugendräume des CVJM. Die Arbeiten auf dem York-Gelände gehen weiter. Fantastic news from @willesdencemetery. After three years of hard work, the cemetery will be open to visitors again from Monday 7th September. The United Synagogue Cemetery at Willesden was founded in 1873 and laid out to a design by Nathan Joseph, whose buildings in English Gothic style each served a particular purpose within the complicated burial procedures and were described in detail in The Builder vol 31 in 1873. Hugh Meller describes it as the Rolls Royce among Jewish cemeteries and many distinguished Jewish people are buried here including numerous members of the Rothschild family such as Sir Anthony de Rothschild (d.1876) who was the first president of the United Synagogue in 1870; Baron Meyer de Rothschild (d.1874) who built Mentmore and Charlotte, Baroness de Rothschild (d.1884) who supported young musicians and set up a soup kitchen in the East End. A well-maintained cemetery with plants and paths, it is compared to Pere Lachaise Cemetery in Paris by Hugh Meller.
