Each of these Hubble Space Telescope snapshots reveals four distorted images of a background quasar surrounding the central core of a foreground massive galaxy. The multiple quasar images were produced by the gravity of the foreground galaxy, which is acting like a magnifying glass by warping the quasar’s light in an effect called gravitational lensing. The images were taken between 2003 and 2004 with the Advanced Camera for Surveys. Credit: NASA, ESA, S.H. A team of astronomers have identified the first direct evidence that groups of stars can tear apart their planet-forming disc, leaving it warped and with tilted rings. This new research suggests exotic planets, not unlike Tatooine in Star Wars, may form in inclined rings in bent discs around multiple stars. The results were made possible thanks to observations with the our Very Large Telescope (VLT) and the @alma.observatory . Our Solar System is remarkably flat, with the planets all orbiting in the same plane. But this is not always the case, especially for planet-forming discs around multiple stars, like the object of the new study: GW Orionis. This system, located just over 1300 light-years away in the constellation of Orion, has three stars and a deformed, broken-apart disc surrounding them. “Our images reveal an extreme case where the disc is not flat at all, but is warped and has a misaligned ring that has broken away from the disc,” says Stefan Kraus, a professor of astrophysics at the University of Exeter in the UK who led the research published today in the journal Science. The misaligned ring is located in the inner part of the disc, close to the three stars. For more information check the link in bio. Image credit: @esoastronomy /L. Catching the Space Station across the Sun 🛰 A couple months ago, I had the idea to capture the International Space Station just as it passed in front of the sun. What I didn’t realize at the time was that the ISS makes the crossing in roughly 0.57 seconds. Push down the camera shutter a half second later and you’d completely miss it. To deal with this, I used a solar filter and an Sony A9 sports camera with 20 FPS in order to catch 10 frames of the ISS as it flew past at 17,200 mph. On the afternoon of the shoot, I drove up the coast to Ventura, California and set my star tracker to track for the movement of the sun in the sky. Then at exactly 1:53:51 pm I pushed the burst mode on the camera and I watched as the ISS raced past my camera screen. - @worldpins on Instagram

#arqueología #colecciones #muarse #archivofotográficomuarse #Andacollo #Inka #Chile #archaeology #museo #LaSerena #museum #Elqui #Limarí #terrazas #inca - @muarse on Instagram

The other day I posted a close up of a huge solar prom blasting 55,000 miles away from the sun, only to get sucked back in by its magnetic pull, the sun was pretty active that day. So fun Fact! The sun has seasons, well kinda sorta, its 2 seasons, Solar Minimum and Solar Maximum. Each season lasts about 11 years give or take. Right now we are in Solar Minimum which can be kinda boring at times when the sun is completely dead of features. But within the next year or 2 we should be rounding the corner into Solar Maximum and THAT is where all the fun begins!
