#ScienceSaturday - Great Sand Dunes has a new tallest dune! This season, park geologist Andrew Valdez hiked 52 miles over the dunefield, measuring each dune over 700 feet (213 m) with survey-grade GPS. Valdez uses the standard that a dunes base is the valley floor projected beneath its summit. Aerial lidar survey data from 2011 gave accurate valley floor elevations beneath the dunes. There are two ways to measure a dune: how tall it is from base to summit, and how high it is in elevation above sea level. This survey focused on how tall each dune is. In 2011, Star Dune was measured at 755 feet, at the time the tallest dune in North America. But since then it has shifted slightly into a deep trough to the north, reducing its height to 734 feet in 2020. But a remote dune near the center of the 30-square-mile dunefield gained height from 732 feet to 745 feet. Valdez has informally named it ‘Hidden Dune’ because it’s not visible from the main frontcountry visitor areas. Hidden Dune is now the tallest dune on the continent! 5.17.20 the day that my life was flipped upside down. honestly I never thought something like this would happen. I could never fathom laying in a hospital bed begging God to please let me legs work. I never thought I’d have to learn to walk again. I’m not going to lie, IT SUCKS, ITS HARD. ITS HEARTBREAKING but its God’s way and I need to try so hard to find comfort in that. — Good news is I can still feel my legs and am getting some movement back. I have the amazing opportunity to go to the Craig hospital in Denver, Colorado for rehabilitation (I will leave billings clinic wednesday) — I can’t thank everyone enough for the prayers and positive vibes. I am so so so blessed it’s impossible to not be positive in such an unfortunate situation. SO much to be thankful for, although sometimes that is easy to forget. It feels weird to celebrate my own life and to allow myself to feel the impact of a day that to some seems like so long ago. But I’ve been thinking about why it is important to me to recognize and reflect on the day of our accident, even 3 years later. It has very little to do with myself, but rather the love support of others, the power of prayer, the privilege of good medical care, the ability of humans to come together when it counts, and God’s promise make beauty from ashes. I don’t want to forget these things. So even in the midst of our messy world, I have so much to be thankful for. Even when thinks get dark and discouraging, I have a hope that remains untouched. Also- after 3 years of a taste and smell disorder caused by my brain injury, and a permanent diagnosis with no hope for recovery from the neurologists... I have gotten my taste and smell back fully. It’s happened VERY gradually, but as of this month I no longer have any restrictions. What a fun anniversary gift and reminder that God is bigger ;) - @angelknoles on Instagram

#NationalPublicLandsDay #HikingHighlights #Dunefield On a hike though the dunes youll find yourself enticed to go just a bit further, just a little higher, to get that view youve been waiting for. There are no established trails on the dunes, rather wind scoured ridges to follow, taking you up each un-named and ever-changing peak. The most popular destination on the sand is High Dune. This dune is the tallest dune visible from the Dunes Parking Lot. A mile and a half (as the crow flies) to the summit with a 700-foot elevation gain, you can experience a view of the entire dunefield. These 30 square miles of sand display dramatic shadows and colors at sunrise and sunset. Avoiding the middle of the day will reward you with cooler temperatures and more stunning viewscapes. Be sure to hike in close-toed shoes, bring plenty of water, and be prepared for the heat. Other popular activities on the dunes include sand boarding and sand sledding. We do not rent these inside the park. Checkout our website for more information on where to find these fun items. Lastly, a select few people find themselves drawn to try and hike the tallest dune in the park. Previously, this was Star Dune, a 755-foot, day long commitment. Our park geologist has recently crowned a new king, Hidden Dune, a 745-foot, day long commitment. Star dune has shrunk to 734 feet. For instance, instead of shaming someone for using single use plastic, let’s take the same amount of time to make a phone call to one business and ask them to switch to compostable take away containers. Climbing is a sport Ive dabbled in off and on for 20 years. But I would never call myself a rock climber. All the same, the skills that go along with it have proved handy as a ski mountaineer. One of my goals this spring is to ski some technical routes. So I need to hone in on those skills that Ive put aside for a few years. As alpine biking wanes, Ill be spending more time on the rope, practicing on rock, and hopefully soon, ice. Climbing has been interesting to return to only 14 months past my life-altering injuries. The fusion of C4 to T1 in my neck has caused some loss in range of motion. Looking up to belay is hard, turning my head downward and to the side to grab things or attach things to my harness is hard... Then, I still have a loss of feeling in my left hand which further complicates the issues. It feel like I am doing everything with a glove on... All the same, Ive got goals. I havent let this accident stop me yet, and Im not about to let it stop me now. Before the latest round of smoke and snow, we hit up Sunset Ridge on Mount Crested Butte. It was the perfect day for a perfect climb with @susan_mol. Im becoming highly aware of my ability to do harm, and more times than not when I am operating from a lower-functioning mentality in my personal life. We all have been problematic at one point--we are humans. However, because we can be problematic, its just as important for us to take accountability for our errors and actively work to adjust ourselves with the new data we have about ourselves and others. Every mistake, failure, and wrong-doing is a chance to learn. We are here to learn and to transform ourselves. Intentional apologies and the intentional adjustment of our thoughts, behaviors, and actions need to be things we are more readily prepared for. Life is continuing at each moment and we never know what is coming next, so its best for us to be cognizant. Im working on areas of my being that have contributed to the harm of others so that my further growth does not have to be at another persons expense. This being said, there will likely still be times when choosing what is best for my journey may hurt the feelings/wishes of another person, but there is still a compassionate way to move through these interactions. My goal is to meet this compassionate equilibrium where I am aware of self and of others. Make weird faces on FaceTime with an old friend from college. Cry. Make tasty food. Get creative with your work projects. If you currently don’t have work use that beautiful mind to create something that will make you smile (a painting, a cake, a finished sudoku!) And most importantly give yourself and those around you grace. We are lucky to have never gone through something like this before so how are we supposed to get it right the first time? Allow yourself space to learn and listen and grant that to others as well. MASKNE .... • In times of COVID-19, we all are „forced“ to wear a face mask every once in a while... And that’s totally okay, because Id rather wear the mask (and am allowed to do funny activities) than not wearing it and having to stay at home. 😅 • BUT I recognized that my skin is definitely no fan of the facemask... I got more pimples on my chin (especially on vacay where I needed to wear it more often than at home). • So I thought about recommendations against MASKNE as we all need it these days: • 1. Keep your masks clean / wash and rotate masks 2. Skip your make-up 3. Take a mask-break for 15 min every 4 hours 4. Cool compresses can be good against redness caused by wearing the mask 5. Stick to your skin care routine 6. Sometimes a refreshing mist can be great to calm and hydrate your skin 7. And still wear your SPF, as masks do not prevent your skin from the sun... 😊 • And 8.
