I’ve learned lessons designing academic buildings, houses, and art spaces that have influenced my thinking on hotels,” says Deborah Berke. “Long-term, we need to stop thinking of hotels as isolated refuges. Instead, we need to create spaces and experiences that move into the world outside, safely and seamlessly. Let’s say my hotel in New York overlooks Union Square. From my room I want to be able to watch the farmers’ market, hear the protests, and feel like I understand the action of the city I’m in. The Drying Green, named after the industrial era practice of laying out freshly washed fleeces on the grass to dry, will not only provide a beautiful canopy outlook to many apartments but also a welcoming invitation to step outdoors. Anticipated to be completed in 2022 the Drying Green will become the central park for the Green Square Town Centre. The Marcellin Champagnat Building at St Paul’s College was honoured with a Te Kāhui Whaihanga NZIA Auckland Branch award in the Education category. “The building is the first stage of, and important start to the redevelopment of a school campus to create fit-for-purpose classrooms and administration facilities. Sited in accordance with a masterplan that addresses urban conditions and envisages connected open spaces, the building simply and effectively negotiates site levels, and is configured and articulated to acknowledge the road to the south, the chapel to the east, classrooms and arrival area to the west and playgrounds to the north. Robust materials and a restrained aesthetic imbue the building with a strong yet subdued presence that will allow it to sit well on the street and in the campus for years to come.” Auckland Branch jury citation. This rare books library near the Highline in the Chelsea Arts District of NYC, focuses on interpreting and incorporating urban sites and programs while being mindful of sequence, massing, and materiality. On September 22, 1935, Edgar Kaufmann Sr. was in Milwaukee and called Frank Lloyd Wright at his Taliesin home to let Wright know he was en route to see the architectural plans for the house at Bear Run. Wright had earlier told Kaufmann that the plans were in the works, but in fact had not actually drawn anything…so he drew the plans in the two hours it took Kaufmann to drive to Taliesin. The image shown is one of Wrights later drawings that captured the publics imagination. 3 summers ago, I took my laptop + printer on my family vacation. I had last minute envelopes to print and invitations to assemble. During assembly, I ran out of twine and ended up driving ALL over the Outer Banks looking for a twine match. I was miserable.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ My beach trip was a bit of a dud and I was the ONLY one to blame. A classic case of being overwhelmed, burned out and believing I had to perform, outdo and be the best. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I believed I had to be flawless.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Well, I am FAR from flawless. I am as human as it gets.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The last 3 years Ive been quietly observing. Quietly sitting in therapy, reading tons of business books, listening to podcasts, learning my industry and understanding my worth + value outside of the medias expectations. As I began booking my 2020 season (HA, if only I knew what was to come!) I had to decide if I was going to continue living by impossible standards, or take everything I learned and put it all into action. To give myself some grace. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I chose grace and it has saved my life.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Im not flawless. I will mess up. Ill make mistakes. Ill disappoint. But you know what, Ill also make a brides experience the most joyful part of planning her wedding. Ill design incredible invitations. I’ll document life through art.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Im not perfect, but I can still share my gifts + talents with the world and maybe along the way, Ill be able to help others not live in a state of burnout like I did. To pick up some grace.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ All of this to say, I hope to be more than art + invitations moving forward. I want to be real and honest and human. This M.Arch. second-year Comprehensive Design Studio: Elevated Porosity expanded its traditional programmatic focus from the scale of the single-family house primarily conceived in steel-frame tectonics to that of a mid-sized, elevated campus building. San Luis Obispo County is closing in on its $1.5 million funding goal for the Nipomo Skate Park with the hopes of breaking ground on construction next spring. It’s taken more than six years to get to this point in the project process, but if you ask Wyatt Russell how he feels about it, he remains optimistic. “I’ve always been pretty excited about the idea, and I never expected it to be a quick process. Congratulations to Kristine Stiphany and Jason Sowell, who won a Texas Society of Architects Studio Award for their Brownie Neighborhood Park project in Austin, Texas. Stiphany is an Assistant Professor of Architecture in the #ttucoa. Sowell is an Associate Professor of Landscape Architecture in #ttu_dola. Their project was one of six selected from 63 entries by jurors Wonne Ickx, Tatiana Bilbao, Jose Castillo, Verónica González Zavala, and Marian de la Fuente. Empire Communities and their collective team wants to engage the neighborhood more on Stein Steel. The team is inviting all stakeholders and neighbors on four dates to drop by for Q&A / Feedback sessions starting this Friday. This will be a casual, social distanced, and a masked required setting. Empire Communities will bring blown up versions of the zoning site plan, elevations of the project, current renderings, and discuss details on the project that have been presented in the zoning committee and neighborhood meetings. These staggered time meetings will allow neighbors to drop by, meet Empire Communities one on one, and provide meaning feedback for the project. Empire Communities and their architects want to hear more ideas/feedback on the overall project, the park donation, answer any questions, names for the project, and other meaningful ideas. Cindy George and Elise Zilius’s ARC 409 project “Slow Urbanism” is an antithesis to the proposed rapid development of Xiong’an, an unbuilt hyper-technologically advanced city, the waste-to-energy power plant is transformed into a sensory public park, preserving the initially proposed green conditions of the site in the city plan. By stripping the plant of its shell and exhibiting the mechanical components, the plant becomes an icon for the city as a symbol of the green ideals of the city. The material products from the waste-to-energy plant as a tangible trace of the process can become integrated with the experience of the park and the temporal pavilions within the light frame above. Together with the established visitor path, users are connected to the byproducts through multiple means of engagement, educating them on the waste-to-energy process and the city’s sustainability initiatives. Estudiantes ARQ UC se adjudican el segundo lugar en Concurso CAP 2020: “Viviendas integradas - comunidades sostenibles”. Proyecto: “Unidad Vecinal Isabel Riquelme”. La propuesta busca solucionar el déficit habitacional y la falta de áreas verdes en San Miguel. La Unidad Vecinal Isabel Riquelme es una estructura urbana que puede abarcar 760 módulos habitacionales de diversas tipologías, los cuales son intercambiables entre sí. El edificio se encuentra suspendido gracias a un marco rígido arriostrado, compuesto por torres antimétricas y una viga habitable. El proyecto libera la primera planta, generando un suelo público flexible en usos. De esta manera acoge tanto el comercio formal del Persa Bío Bío como también los comercios informales y la feria itinerante del sector, otorgando continuidad al tejido urbano del barrio. Congratulations to Master of Landscape Architecture student Sing Zixin Chen on receiving an ASLA 2020 Honor Award in the Urban Design category for her thesis project: Adaptive Traditions of the Eastern Waterfront of Mumbai, India. Out of 1000+ submissions, Sing’s work was selected as one of 35 Student Award winners who represent the best of landscape architecture. In addition to the prestigious recognition, Sing’s work is also featured as the cover art on the corresponding issue of Landscape Architecture Magazine (@landarchmag). Sing’s award-winning thesis project examines Mumbai’s Eastern Waterfront, which has a coexistence relationship with Koliwada village life, the area’s unique ecological habitat, and heavy industry. The project explores a unique form of documentation and captures the complex, dynamic, and intertwined spatial and material relationships of the site. It also recognizes the site’s cultural context and its people’s way of life by introducing a design movement that builds on indigenous and vernacular infrastructure to generate sustainable, resistant, and nature-based technology. The project aims to rethink and reconsider the land’s interface with the water, which plays an important role in the villagers’ livelihood and cultural and spiritual practices. This conceptual design was for a #multigenerational #familyresidence in Melbourne, with 3 individual homes located on the same site. The design balances individual family privacy with communal gathering spaces. A central boardwalk promenade, anchored by a remarkable oak tree, and a reflecting pond link the three houses. Each family house has its own entry, kitchen, dining room, living room, family room, master suite and bedroom wing. Happy to announce that we won the competition for the design of an island garden in the National Botanic Garden in Meise (BE). To visit the island, we propose a free running in-situ cast walking path on top of the existing island. Afterwards parts of the island are dug out to create space for a rich water-related fauna and flora. The pathway transforms alongside the walk offering different ways to experience nature. Doppelmayr builds and operates the temporary ropeway for the Bundesgartenschau 2023 in Mannheim. It is over 2 kilometers long and reaches almost the entire Green corridor northeast: The ropeway that runs during the Bundesgartenschau from April 14th to October 8th, 2023 connects the two exhibition grounds Spinelli and Luisenpark built and operated by the Austrian company Doppelmayr. In Mannheim, the monocable gondola detachable is operated over a distance of about 2.1 kilometers up to 2.800 persons per hour and direction in 65 transport cabins with 10 persons each. These ideas were conceptualised through real-time conversations with the aging population and the younger generation | Community Park Formed around the community mounds, slowing down movement and increasing empathic interaction among age groups, the community park combines a plant nursery + Coworking resident cafe, Kinder ‘Garden’ and an age inclusive green finger allotment. Retirees will have a closer relationship with their grandchildrens whilst the working adults can still have the option to work away from the office. Retirees will have a closer relationship with their grandchildrens whilst the working adults can still have the option to work away from the office. - Bull’s Shit or Alpine Flatology (2018 Bartlett School of Architecture Y3 Unit 5) The abandonment of swiss transhumance farming is posing a threat for the future of the alps as the practice has maintained the landscape of the alps and allowed flora and fauna to thrive. The project rekindles this tradition through a series of festive conference center for the publicly open and inclusive discussion of the alp’s wellbeing. Using inflatable structures, the ephemeral conference inflates to celebrate the importance of swiss transhumance and direct democracy. Founded in January 2020, Aelene Thorne and Patrick Usborne met in the corridors of the Architectural Association while queuing for diploma interviews and our 12-year discussion about setting up practice started there and continued throughout our time with @fcbstudios and @maearchitects (Aelene), and with @chrislee.serie at Serie Architects (Patrick).
