Denna gång är det inte en avsliten höftböjare, en krossad nack-kota eller ett söndertrasat knä eller nån av de andra grejerna jag inte skulle kunna hämta mig ifrån. Nu är det tuffare. Jag har en väldigt illa placerad cancer i gallvägarna. Extremt svår, kanske omöjlig att behandla. Fortfarande ett besked kvar att invänta, men ingen direkt solskensprognos. Oavsett annalkande beskeds natur så återstår sedan några sista ”halmstrån” att sträcka mig efter, i detta okontrollerade fall mot avgrunden som började för en månad sedan. Dessa halmstrån är dock huvudsakligen bara sätt att köpa mig tid. Låt mig förtydliga: jag är långt ifrån uppgiven. Vissa strider kan man inte vinna. Det har ingenting med att ge upp att göra! Många av er vet redan och jag tackar er alla för er enorma kärlek och allt otroligt stöd jag fått och som mina barn och min blivande fru Louise har fått. Blivande? The strangest weapons of ww2, the anti-tank dogs. During the 1st world war, dogs were important for all the belligerents and were used for a lot of things. So the Soviets had the idea of using dogs to destroy enemy tanks. So today we are going to see the most famous strange weapon of this project. In the 1930s therefore, the Soviets built schools to train dogs, first with circus trainers and hunters. The initial idea of sending a dog which then set a bomb under a tank by cutting a rope with its teeth is abandoned because it is far too difficult for a dog. German Shepherds (the dogs chosen by the Soviets) were then used as Kamikazes: The next plan was that the dog would die, but the bomb would successfully detonate. The dog would run underneath a tank, with something sticking out of the top of the bomb, so once it made contact with the tank, it would explode . When the Germans invaded the Soviet Union in 1941, anti-tank dogs were therefore used during the Battle of Moscow. But everything did not go as planned. Indeed, the Soviets had trained their dogs on Soviet tanks running on diesel, while the German tanks used gasoline. Thus, the smell of the dogs did not work and in case of the presence of Soviet tanks, we can easily guess the result. In addition, the dogs had been trained to position themselves under immobilized tanks. But in a combat situation and with all the noise that entails, the dogs were frightened, even more so as the tanks moved forward. Most often, they waited for the tank to stop but the Germans killed them long before. Finally, very often sent as a sacrifice, the dogs retreated in panic towards the trenches where their masters were. When they jumped into the trenches, they exploded, killing all the soldiers around them. Got a little teary-eyed today on the noon show when I shared a pic. of my grandfather during his service in the war. Got a little tongue tied too.(Oh well) His name was James Kalei Kaholokula. Born in Pauwela, Maui. Part Japanese/ part Hawaiian, and fluent in both languages. He served in the 100th Infantry Battalion — considered the most decorated American unit. He used his language skills as MIS, military intelligence. He went on the join the 442nd Regimental combat team. He was part of the few who survived and returned home to Hawaii after the war. He became a musician, composing mele, like Pua ‘Olena, Keahiwela, Hule’ia, and many many more with our ohana group— Na Kaholokula. I’ve always had an appreciation for those servicemen and women, but I didn’t realize the magnitude of their selfless actions until later in life, listening to the stories my brother @the_baronk (the historian) would share— and interviewing survivors through my career. It’s hard not to be moved knowing they fought for our freedom— while MANY simultaneously fought against prejudice to prove their loyalty to a nation that once looked at them as the enemy. In a time where Hawai’i was in a state of change, it wasn’t easy being Hawaiian either. So that’s the reason behind today’s water works.
