It is also critically endangered, and the focus of considerable conservation attention. Before humans arrived it was common throughout New Zealand’s forests, but predation by introduced mammals brought it to the brink of extinction - a low point of about 50 birds only in the mid 1990s. The transfer of the whole population to predator-free islands and intensive intervention in every stage of its life has led to a steady increase in numbers. Population: A total of 210 birds was known in June 2020. All carry radio transmitters and are intensively monitored and managed. Distribution: They disappeared from the North Island by about 1930, but persisted longer in the wetter parts of the South Island. The last birds died out in Fiordland in the late 1980s. A population of less than two hundred birds was discovered on Stewart Island in 1977, but this population was also declining due to cat predation. During the 1980s and 1990s the entire known population was transferred to Whenua Hou/Codfish Island off the coast of Stewart Island, Maud Island in the Marlborough Sounds and Hauturu/Little Barrier Island in the Hauraki Gulf. Since then birds have been moved between Whenua Hou, Maud Island and Hauturu, as well as to and from newly predator-free Chalky and Anchor Islands in Fiordland. Kakapo now occur only on forested islands, though they previously appeared to have inhabited a wide range of vegetation types. Threats: Adult kakapo are vulnerable to predation by cats and stoats, and their eggs and chicks can be killed by rats. Females alone incubate eggs and raise chicks. As they must spend long periods away from the nest feeding, eggs and chicks are particularly vulnerable to predation when the nest is unattended. El treking consiste en una caminata que comienza a las 8:30 de la mañana con el objetivo de llegar a a la cima de un cerro dónde se avistan aguilas y Condores. En el recorrido está la posibilidad ver cernícalos, peucos, Chunchos, carpinteritos, loicas, degús, aguiluchos, pequenes, turcas, zorros culpeo y muchas cosas más, además en primavera el cerro comienza a florecer y en la cima se tiene una hermosa vista de la cordillera. Todo interesado contáctenos por dm, al correo o al número que aparece en la pantalla. Son 10 mil pesos la salida (el grupo entero) y para subir el cerro maximo 3 personas, con la opción de no subir el cerro y caminar por un sendero si son más personas. Estaba yo enviando un audio cuando de pronto escucho un golpe seco en el suelo, me vuelvo a mirar y veo algo que parecía una paloma ¡pero no era una paloma! le doy dos disparos sin mirar el seteo de la cámara, miro el visor y él emprende vuelo con una cria de tuca tuca u otro reodor en las garras! Y no sabía que puta hacer y al tratar de enfocar en vuelo, lo pierdo detrás de muralla de marañas. Logré una foto del milano chico (Gampsonyx swansonii) sobre el hoyo del tuca tuca (Ctenomys conoveri). Y creo que nunca más se me va a presentar la oportunidad de tomar una foto de esas dos especies en esa situación. Black-necked Stork - Huge impact - After whining about the cacophony coming from my local house band I received some questions regarding what I am doing with all the extra time on my hands apart from picking on my partner’s piano-playing. - I save about two hours per day not having to commute to work and although one could argue I have taken up Spanish by watching some of the current most popular shows on Netflix, I use most of my spare time to learn about random facts. Some (most) of these facts are bird related and thus appropriate to share with all of you. - For obvious reasons I googled “doomsday”. A few clicks later I had learned about how a US Doomsday Plane designed to survive a nuclear attack was taken out by a single bird during a test flight. The US Navy called it a “Class A mishap” which cost them several millions of dollars. - To avoid these type of mishaps it is important to study the impact birds have on turbine engines. Back in the days there used to be experiments where you would fire a bird from a cannon into the engine to see what happened. Later they started using frozen chickens as test subjects since these would better resemble a bird tensing all its muscles preparing for impact. - In the case of the deformed Doomsday Plane, the spokesman said it was unclear what species of bird was behind the attack but if they would manage to scrape off some of the bird residue (snarge) they can send it to the Smithsonian Institution Feather Identification Lab lead by Carla Dove (!). They analyse snarge DNA to understand the impact of different bird species hitting an aircraft and they try to save lives by applying the Bird Avoidance Model (BAM!). - I can imagine that a 150 cm tall Black-necked Stork could create quite the impact if it would collide with an airplane. The couple that I saw on a wetland cruise outside Darwin in October did not seem to be interested in flying at all. Long post alert! Well that’s the 2020 Raptor Fair done and dusted. Organising the fair this year was certainly a challenge, but the feedback suggests that it was worth it. The fair is a collective effort, and i am going to do my best not to forget anyone. As normal the NCBP staff were utterly amazing. On bird staff were Sarah, Jimmy and Ben. We figured out what Ben does here on Saturday evening, but sadly we had forgotten what it was by the morning. These guys did most of the demos and made the weekend run how it was supposed to. The NCBP cafe and shop staff did the entrance gates and the Owl House Cafe. They were, Ben, Caroline, Vicki (my wife), Morwenna, Sarah and Chloe. The NCBP volunteer team, as normal, stepped things up a notch and smashed it. In no particular order they were, Lynn, Nick, Amy, Kieran, Jamie, Owen, Hayley, Davey, Nicole, Abigail and Keith - these lovely people gave up their spare time to do the car parking, empty the bins, sort the BBQ and generally do all the thankless back-room jobs. Thank you, thank you, thank you - you guys rock. Our guest falconers this year were:- Ben Long - falconry grandee and general falconry legend Xavier Morel - widely regarded as the coolest guy in European falconry Nathalie Denolf - widely regarded as being perfect in every way Gary Swainson - the guy who made out that he had a vegan Barn Owl who ate tofu! These guys flew everything from a Bateleur to a white Gyr Falcon. They were funny, educational and generally awe-inspiring to watch. Mark Naguib MRCVS did his normal vet seminar, outside this year to enable social distancing. As expected it was very well attended, as it should be. Alan Walker did a grand job organising the Eagle Group - what an amiable Geordie he is 😀 We were down on stand holders this year - but the ones who came reported record sales and they all did a great job of setting up some fantastic stands selling the best furniture you’ll find anywhere. Guys - I’ll be in touch soon regarding next year. Thank you for coming in challenging circumstances. The Fair can take place because our landlords, Jake and Raffa Duncombe. ‘A little disappointment on its face after an unsuccessful dive’ -White bellied Sea eagle. First BIF shot on the feed - hope you like it! I apologise in advance for the drastic cropping - I still have a lot to learn in BIF, like tracking the bird and keeping it in the centre of the frame😅. One of the best outing ever! 🎵Carrion my wayward son🎵 If you look to the sky above Tonto National Monument, you may notice this seasonal resident. Often seen riding thermals in a wobbly circle, turkey vultures, soar above in search of carrion. Instead of hunting down prey, these birds clean up the countryside by using their noses to find already dead animals (carrion). Regardless of how the animal died (predator, disease, car), these birds dive down and begin to feast. Luckily for them, their bright red head is featherless to help them stay clean in the process. We are very sad to share the news that our beloved North Island kaka Monty has passed away. At 50 years old, Monty, who hatched at Auckland Zoo in January 1970, was the worlds oldest known kaka in captivity. He arrived at Staglands in 1999 and lived here alongside his kea cousins in The Kea Aviary, where he endeared himself to our many visitors with his cheeky antics. Did you know that a birds’ feathers provide insulation against the cold? A birds body heat warms up the air between their feathers, so birds often fluff up in the cold to trap as much air as possible; the more air they trap, the warmer they are. In addition, a special oil that birds rub onto their feathers from a gland near their tails also provides waterproofing, so that they can stay warm and dry! Today is Threatened Species Day. This day commemorates the tragic death of the last remaining Thylacine (Tasmanian Tiger) at Hobart Zoo on Sept 7, 1936. The death of this animal led to the thylacine species becoming extinct, which is a fate shared by more than 100 Australian animal and plant species over the past 200 years. With the Blue Mountains alone having over 160 rare or threatened plants and animals, it is also a day to celebrate the amazing conservation work done via Council’s conservation and restoration programs – that are supported by hundreds of volunteers – including Bushcare, Remote Bushcare, Swampcare and the Bush Backyards programs.
