- The lives of both Judson Box and Erik Troelsen were changed by the events of September 11th, 2001. A photograph brought them together. The pair met for the first time onstage at a Manhattan fundraiser for the National September 11th Memorial and Museum, when Judson fervently thanked the man who had brought his family a measure of peace. Erik had posted photographs on the museums online archive of 9/11 images, videos and stories. One showed a firefighter in full gear striding through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel ahead of his traffic-stalled fire truck shortly after the World Trade Centers Twin Towers came under attack. Having entered the tunnel before the first plane hit, Erik was unaware of the tragedy that was unfolding outside when he snapped the photograph. Suddenly, the girl in the car ahead of us got out crying, he said. Then we turned on the radio and heard what was going on. Soon after, fire trucks started racing through the tunnel, but a car that had broken down jammed traffic, he said. Some of the trucks got stuck, so the firefighters decided to walk instead, Erik recalled. Thats when I took the photograph. Scrolling through the archive, Judson came face to face with his son, Gary, a firefighter with Brooklyns Squad 1. Its the last known photo of Gary, then 35, who died less than an hour later when the towers came toppling down. Gary, who was among 12 members of Squad 1 to die at the World Trade Center, was a veteran of the citys fire department. He was married, with two children when he died working as a firefighter — the job he had dreamed of since he was a kid. It was a shock emotionally, yet a blessing to find this photo, recalled Judson. Its like looking at a walking dead man. You know what happened to him within 45 minutes. His voice quaking with emotion from recounting his discovery of the photo, he said that he can no longer bring himself to look at it. Judson said hes pored over the photo with a magnifying lens, trying to look into my sons eyes, just trying to see. One thing I can tell you, there was no fear in his eyes.
