Juneteenth Emancipation Day celebration at Eastwoods Park on June 19, 1900 in Austin, Texas. Courtesy of Austin Public Library. ‪•‬ On “Freedom’s Eve,” or the eve of January 1, 1863, the first Watch Night services took place. ‪•‬ ‪On that night, enslaved and free African-Americans gathered in churches and private homes all across the country awaiting news that the Emancipation Proclamation had taken effect.‬ ‪•‬ ‪At the stroke of midnight, prayers were answered as all enslaved people in the Confederate States were declared legally free. ‪•‬ Union soldiers, many of whom were black, marched onto plantations and across cities in the south reading small copies of the Emancipation Proclamation spreading the news of freedom. ‪•‬ ‪But not everyone in Confederate territory would immediately be free. ‪•‬ Even though the Emancipation Proclamation was made effective in 1863, it could not be implemented in places still under Confederate control. ‪•‬ This meant that in the westernmost Confederate state of Texas, enslaved people would not be free until much later. ‪•‬ ‪On June 19, 1865 that changed, when enslaved African-Americans in Galveston Bay, Texas were notified by the arrival of some 2,000 Union troops that they, along with the more than 250,000 other enslaved black people in the state, were free by executive decree.‬ ‪•‬ ‪The post-emancipation period known as Reconstruction (1865-1877) marked an era of great hope, uncertainty, and struggle for America as a whole. ‪•‬ Formerly enslaved people immediately sought to reunify families, establish schools, run for political office, push radical legislation and even sue slaveholders for compensation. ‪•‬ This was nothing short of amazing! Not even a generation out of enslavement, African-Americans were inspired and empowered to completely transform their lives and their country.‬ #happyjunteenth #juneteenth #blackhistory #blacklivesmatter #repost via @blackhistory - @alexenglish_803 on Instagram

Happy National Public Lands Day! Check out these historic photos of Montezuma Well! #TodayILearned that Montezuma Well did not become part of Montezuma Castle National Monument until 1947. Before that, it was owned by the Back family. The previous owner of the Well bought the land for one horse, and later sold it to the Backs for two horses, which “doubled his profit.” We think this place is worth much more than that today! National Public Lands Day is a day to participate in service projects to help your national parks like Montezuma Well continue to thrive. How do you show #service to your public lands? -eh (Images: NPS, Arizona Memory Project) #FindYourPark #EncuentraTuParque #NPS #publiclands #LeaveNoTrace #RecreateResponsibly #NPLD #nature #service #parks - @montezumanps on Instagram

Today would have been my mothers 90th birthday. She was a fighter! You did not mess with Margarete or anyone that she loved! I am so grateful for her love, her teaching us to be mentally tough, and loving me even through my crazy ideas (going to college, studying tv/film, skydiving, moving away from LA, etc.) I miss you! 3 - @renodacampbellphoto on Instagram

I’ll never be the same again. You took the air out the room when you left. Taught me what it Is to be a man. Heart break is the only way to describe this. I wish we had more time because I owe you everything and didn’t even begin to repay you. The measure of a Man starts and ends with you. I’m grateful to have you for 39 years. Writing this with tears in my eyes. Never been afraid to call you Daddy cause you earned the title. I’ll truly miss you. . . . This Sculpture of Bukwus was an amazing piece to create with my dear friend and mentor @lindsaystudio for the @yvraf . This piece represents someone who has become so disconnected from themselves, that they have become consumed by supernatural forces. For me this symbolizes the people we have in our lives that have suffered through drug addiction, alcoholism, desensitization, and many other afflictions of today’s society. May it serve as a reminder to stay on the right path and never forget who you are. . . . . #art #northwestcoastart #firstnationsart #nativeart #nuuchahnulth #sculpture #clay #figurativeart #artistsoninstagram - @thejoshuawatts on Instagram

“Young couples, they face these challenges and they’re ready to give up because they think they’re broken. And I just want to say, look, if that breaks a marriage, then Barack and I have been broken off and on, throughout our marriage, but we have a very strong marriage. And if I had given up on it, if I had walked away from it, in those tough times, then I would’ve missed all the beauty that was there as well.” @michelleobama - @bridalinstaglam on Instagram

We are not only all responsible for each other’s security. We are also, in some measure, responsible for each other’s welfare. Global solidarity is both necessary and possible. It is necessary because without a measure of solidarity no society can be truly stable, and no one’s prosperity truly secure.” The Elders mark the International Day of Peace by sharing the words of our dear friend and former Chair of The Elders, Kofi Annan. . . . . . . #peace #internationaldayofpeace #peaceday #peaceday2020 #kofiannan #dayofpeace #peaceful #antiwar #peacebuilding #peacemaking #conflict #conflictresolution #kofi #nelsonmandela #mandela #madiba #TheElders - @theelders_org on Instagram

In 1918 businessman and community leader Frederick Madison Roberts earned the title of Californias first Black elected assemblyman. Roberts defeated his opponent who ran his campaign with nothing but racial slurs against him. Instead of race-baiting, Roberts ran his campaign on real policy. His candidacy was built on securing voting rights for Black males. Through his work he was able to pass a number of civil rights mesaures in the areas of public accomodations and education. He also sponsored legislation to establish UCLA, expanded the use of school textbooks, and proposed civil rights and anti-lynching measures. Frederick Madison Roberts won many elections, serving a total of 16 years in the state assembly. Another interesting fact about Frederick Madison Roberts is that he was the first recorded Black graduate of LA High School! Shoutout to all the Romans out there! Frederick Madison Roberts held notable firsts in our great city and was truly an agent of change for the rights we hold today! #StoriesOfBlackLA - @destinationcrenshaw on Instagram

TBS programming is designed by two artists/designers/educators with over twenty years of combined experience as multi-hyphenate creators and educators. Part of the reason we created TBS is to be able to bring University-level instruction to people who may not otherwise have access to it. In this direction, we are introducing a new series of IG posts that share elements from the syllabi we are currently teaching from at Universities including Parsons The New School of Design, Pratt Institute, and The City of New York. The first course we’ll be sharing as an open-source syllabus is Art & Protest, surrounding the concept that All art is political, there is art in all protests, and in every corner of life. The Umbrella content for the entire course are organized into modules, by the topics covered in the June 2020 Angela Davis Interview with Amy Goodman. Module I: On Police and State-Sanctioned Violence -Gaiter, C.
