Most of you know that I am a Mother to three littles, and our childcare situation has changed dramatically due to Covid. In an effort to protect those nearest and dearest to us who are at highest risk for Covid, my husband and I have quite literally been passing ships in the night as we work to find a new normal. With that, we have planned a much needed family vacay next week and I am so looking forward to disconnecting to reconnect with them. As I dive into the true history of the 4th of July I can’t say that I’m shocked. The Fourth of July commemorates the day the Declaration of Independence was adopted: July 4th 1776. Nearly ONE HUNDRED YEARS before the abolition of slavery. A day we celebrate freedom? Yet Juneteenth the day that the last slave was set free (true freedom) is not a national holiday. Something about celebrating this holiday esp. with so much injustice happening, just doesn’t sit right with me. (Just my truth) I am proud of us for opening our eyes to this injustice and using our voices as much as we have been. I truly do believe we are the generation of change. But we have a long way to go. “5 years. 6 babies. 97+ hours of labors. 1 Land Birth. 2 Waterbirths. 1 Scheduled Cesarean Section. This is ME, currently 3 months Postpartum, not 5 months pregnant... Everyday reminding myself of the blessings that have been bestowed upon me... everyday reminding myself that I’ve made so much progress from where I was May 22nd. You see, after my cesarean section, the nurses asked me to stand and I couldn’t. I will NEVER forget the look on their faces. Three times they asked, three times I tried, three times I gave it my all... with a shaking of my head “No” I could not stand. I could not breathe. I could not talk. & Each time they sat me back down. I was defeated. I wanted to so badly recover. My quiver was full and yet I couldn’t physically care for it. If I’ve never learned anything in three months I’ve learned to have GRACE... for myself and my body! I’ve learned to embrace this fragile phase for what it is despite how it’s often depicted. It hasn’t been easy and I still battle with limitations of diastasis recti and my physical appearance, but I’m so fulfilled knowing that I embraced the past few months with prayer + patience, while the intimacy of my support system has grown immensely! As Mothers, we’re way too hard on ourselves, we want our bodies to appear as they did before and we too often forget what we’ve done, how far we’ve come and all that we’ve accomplished. This year has been the most transformative year of my life. I have found another family so quickly, and the bonds I have made with each person on the team could never be replicated. Even on the most stressful days, these people made me feel so at peace and loved. Spent the day with my family in Talbot County, MD where Frederick Douglass was born in what was believed to be 1818. Engaging with public history and spending time at historical sites tied to Black life in this country has become increasingly important to me with every passing year. I’ve also found that I appreciate these visits most when I get to share them with my family, whether it be walking through a museum with my grandparents or bringing my son and daughter to places that made our lives possible. Douglass’ work has always been a source of guidance for me, his writing has helped me make sense of where we’ve been and how we got here. I also know that the remarkable work Douglass did over the course of his life was part of a much larger quilt of Black resistance. Millions of people whose names will never be known. When I think of Juneteenth—when I think of emancipation—I think of all the people who fought for freedom but who never got the opportunity to experience it themselves. Slavery in this country lasted 250 years. Its demise did not happen overnight, it came from intergenerational work by those who fought for a better world they understood they might never see. I’m reminded that Black people have fought for freedom from the moment we first arrived on these shores. And while the fight for abolition took on many different forms, that resistance, that fight, that push, was always present. It chipped away at the wall. It hammered away at oppression. It made the dream of freedom feel more possible. I think of this often, how my ancestors were fighting for something many of them knew they might not get to experience themselves, but they continued to fight because they knew that someone, someday, would benefit from the work they put in. That remains an important lesson for me. Douglass was able to accomplish what he did, because of the millions of people who fought both before him, and alongside him. We plan on making our salon more diverse and inclusive and a big step of that involves knowing how to cut, style, and overall understand curly hair. ⠀ ⠀ Those with curly hair are at a big disadvantage when it comes to their hair because not a lot of salons or people know how to cut curly hair (they also dont teach it in beauty school) so education is entirely up to the individual to find and learn if they want to. ⠀ ⠀ So cheers to the first of many!! 💃🏽and we hope to have more curly haired beauties in our salon. Natural Blonde Ok, ok so we’ve all learned (thanks to Covid-19) that I’m not a natural blonde. Some of y’all go way back to my brunette days so you already knew. Thing is I love being blonde, mostly. The one thing I don’t enjoy is that people actually think blondes aren’t as smart. People have said “That’s a blonde moment” or “Wow, you’re smart too.” 🙄 As a brunette people take me more seriously, but there are more acting roles for blondes. Happy Monday! This week is back to business as usual. Recently invested in some planners to help keep life organized and last week I slipped up and did not plan. HUGE MISTAKE. Pretty much winged it every single day last week and was a hot mess express trying to balance it all, which left me really anxious and overwhelmed. I found myself just doing way too much and feeling extremely burnt out by the end of the week. Getting back into a routine is helping me remain stress free (for the most part because, kids 🥴). It really just helps me stay focused on what my goals are so Im not piling more on my plate than I can realistically handle. Just wrapped up my past two years of doing lab research full time! It was challenging in the most rewarding of ways. I learned more than I could have imagined, met some brilliant people, saw the art in science on a daily basis, and my fro flourished while I did it👩🏾🔬 - My research looked at ancestral differences in Alzheimer’s Disease pathology, so it was empowering to be a part of project whose patient sample extended beyond just “Non-Hispanic Whites.” The ability of scientific research to have population wide impact is limited when its samples come from just one population. It was a reminder that having a diverse patient pool isn’t impossible, but it’s a choice that scientists have to willingly make. - There are many questions about how “race” is used as a category in science. Often, it only introduces more bias if it isn’t examined critically and with nuance. Often, it ignores that racism, not race, is the significant factor in pathological outcomes. Science is inherently political. The questions we ask are influenced by the things we care about. As a Black scientist, I’ve always been the only one in my immediate workspace & that can present with its challenges. Science is hard, but it’s fruitful & it’s dynamic. Today is my birthday! It has been a rough year, making it that much easier to reflect on what matters. I am thankful for the life I get to lead. I am a published author (it was once only a dream). I live in Manhattan (also another dream I had). The part of my life that I am the most grateful for is the part I didn’t dream up. It’s the family I have created. I didn’t know I would be married to a poet who constantly buys me flowers, gives me handwritten love notes and sets up a homemade spa day the Sunday before my birthday so that I get to relax a bit. That’s on top of the floral decorated cupcakes and champagne that started my early birthday celebration. We have been together for almost six years now (married for nearly 3). One message changed everything. He has been in my life ever since, and I am truly thankful for him Nugget, our sweet little baby boy. I didn’t know I would have a son. I really thought I was having a girl early on in my pregnancy. I found out on New Year’s Day via a loving text from my Husband that we were having a boy. I told him I wanted him to surprise me with the gender. I love him so much. He is the best part of us in human form. He is so happy and brings so much joy. He loves books, and I will read Sleepy Kitten or any book he wants, over and over, because he already enjoys storytime. He is my twin. His smile is captivating, and I love watching him grow. He is so clever, and watching his personality shape is everything. They are everything to me. This is my world.
