It’s difficult to know where to start in introducing the magazine, as It doesn’t have a specific field of study or matter of interest. While the powers that be fail to provide, our communities in England continue to deliver, and only by supporting them will that continue. People are expressing their artistic styles in so many ways and we want to get as many people as possible involved in this project: so whether you’re a musician, photographer, artist, craftsperson, business owner, charity, social worker (anything that involves you loving what you do) please let us know and we’ll try and feature as many of you as possible! A whole week with Ro. Just me and him, father and son, while @portiajett was on her much deserved holidays. Wanted to post a nice pic of us two, til I realised I didn’t take any 😂 I did find this one though... it’s me blending into the sofa at 11.35 on Wednesday night, pram and schoolbag ready for nursery the next day, dinners cooked and kitchen cleaned, 6.30am alarm looming but still with 2 hours of life admin to complete and seriously considering cancelling all our plans for the rest of the week so I could find some sleep.. somewhere! Just SHATTERED!!!!!! So glad I didn’t cancel those plans. Ro and I have had the BEST week, can honestly say I’ve not had a week like it in his nearly 3 years. Could’ve cried multiple times just looking at my son and him looking at me in a way we’ve never been able to before. So incredibly proud of my boy. I tell him every day 🥰 he’s been a utter legend all week, I couldn’t have asked for a better boy. And truth is, this week HASN’T been overwhelming, it hasn’t been “testing” or “too much”. My first rejection slip! 1966. Beverly Sky (who is now my best friend of more than 50 years) and I were counselors at Blue Mountain Camp. After the kids were asleep, we’d sit on the porch of our cabin, smoke weed, and write (me) and illustrate (her) our opus, Grimm Tales for Fairy Children. I recently found this in some old papers and tacked it up on my wall because I love thinking about those two girls who were just excited about making art. It didn’t matter that our book was silly, that no one in their right mind would ever want to read it, let alone publish it. What mattered was that we were wading into the waters of creativity and we liked it there. Beverly was already living the life of an artist. She was my first role model and inspiration that I could also live that life. I don’t think we were discouraged by the rejection. The fact that someone—even “the rejection slip sender”—thought our work was “a groove,” was validation enough. I wish I’d saved all my rejection slips over the years so I could come into a workshop and dump a dozen big garbage bags filled with them into the middle of the floor! My dad introduced me to golf at a young age. He taught me how to hold a putter, swing a club and to respect the gentlemens game. Today, I still love and respect it. Roger Gonzalez, my dad, learned everything he taught me by watching golfs early pioneers that included the great Arnold Palmer. Last week, Palmer died just days before the Ryder Cup, which my dad had been anxiously awaiting for more than a year and traveled from Utah to Minnesota to attend. He reminded me that as a young boy I had met and talked to Palmer. My dad used to lug me along to the senior golf tournaments in Park City, Utah, he would volunteer at and one year Mr. Palmer took the time to greet and talk to a young version myself. My dad watched the moment from afar and still remembers it vividly. As he began to describe it, the memory resurfaced and I remembered looking up at Palmer and thinking how cool it was this old-timer had time for me. Fast forward 20-plus years later and my dad took advantage of another opportunity to thank Mr. Palmer for that moment. While attending the Ryder Cup, we came upon a wall signatures honoring Palmer. My dad had to stop. He waited patiently for a sharpie to thank the golf great for that moment he and I shared so many years ago and what Palmer had done for the sport. This is a picture of my dad signing the wall where thousands of other thankful fans honored The King one last time. I, too, signed it with a simple Thank you. Thanks Mr. Palmer for inspiring the many special memories my dad and I have shared through golf over the year and the new one we made last week at the Ryder Cup. Because at times, I struggle to remember what was the normal? Is this the normal or was that the normal. I went to office today after almost three weeks and stepping out felt so good, so normal. I hadn’t realised it while at home. And to be honest, staying home has been okay so far. But today it reminded me of the time when going to office everyday was routine. 𝘈𝘯𝘥 𝘐 𝘮𝘪𝘴𝘴 𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘦. We need to get justice for all victims of police violence. On July 3, 2019 Rocky Boy Cree Tribal Member Stonechild “Stoney” Chiefstick was killed by the Poulsbo Police Department Officer Craig Keller. Poulsbo is a small majority white town in Kitsap County, Washington—it borders the Suquamish Indian Reservation & the Port Gamble S’Klallam Indian Reservation, and like many “border towns” has historically had many racial problems towards Native people. Stoney is a loving father and was tragically taken from his babies by law enforcement, like so many Native people before him. We’ll tell more about Stoney’s story & the investigation & the family’s pursuit of justice. As the letter from Kitsap County Prosecutor Chad M. Enright says himself about reviewing when police kill people, “the current system does not appear fair.” All in due time. I and my fellow Native attorney Gabe Galanda have been retained as Advocate and attorneyfor three of his children and their mother. We are going to do our best to ensure that this precious Native brother’s life creates change in police culture. There will be more action steps later and we will keep you informed. But what I need for folks to do right now is to contact Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson ( @agbobferguson ) and tell him he must review this case independently. His number is 206-464-7744 and tell them they MUST independently review Stonechild Chiefstick’s case. The Attorney General has already said it will review 30-some other cases where police killed people in 2020. Stoney can’t be “just another” Native person who killed by the police or who died a violent death. It happens way too much. Stoney’s case also can’t be overlooked simply because it happened 4 months before the end of 2019. It must be independently reviewed and you all can help. Please make sure we hold his killer accountable. All the family members, friends, allies and accomplices who contacted me and said we have to work together, I’m inviting you to work with us during this time. Thank you.
