Saddened to hear of the passing of Philippe Daverio. I had the great pleasure of photographing him for #WeAreDandy book with @nattyadams in 2016. Accompanied by @kellfire, we visited him at his cavernous home in Milan, filled with books, art, papers, Egyptian rolling papers, and inspiration everywhere. The lead image is how I recall my first glimpses of him, but it’s a bit of a lie: I didn’t feel right about pulling out my camera at his front door before I had properly met him, so when we were saying our goodbyes I coaxed him for a few last frames. To me it has the same energy—his mischievous bright smile. ✨ Philippe Daverio was a well known Italian art critic, historian, TV personality, and—of course—great dandy. Het coronavirus besliste er anders over. Met zijn openluchtshow ‘Huidhonger’ bedacht de cabaretier een waardig alternatief, vanavond om 21u50 op Canvas te zien. “Huidhonger gaat over de tijd van corona, het gebrek aan leiding van de minister van Cultuur en natuurlijk ook de evolutie van mijn liefde voor Vlaanderen. Zo heb ik bijvoorbeeld een week op hotel gezeten in Ninove. Ik wilde namelijk weten waarom zoveel inwoners daar op Vlaams Belang stemmen. Ik denk nu genuanceerder over mensen die extreemrechts stemmen: het zijn ook maar mensen met allerlei emoties. Ik weet niet hoe het bij jou zit, maar ik gebruik corona iets te gretig als een excuus. Zo kreeg ik het bijvoorbeeld aan de stok met een Nederlander bij de bakker in Frankrijk die te veel croissants en stokbroden had besteld. Ik hoorde mezelf opeens zeggen: ‘Kom op, man. Dat doe je toch niet. Het is corona!’ Het is even wennen om te spelen voor een publiek met mondmaskers. Maar goed, je hoort ze uiteindelijk wel. Ik doe dit ook al 22 jaar, dus in dat opzicht is het voor mij gesneden koek. Als ik zin heb om op te treden, dan is dat al de helft van de voorbereiding. A lot to say about this one. For years I used to be in the driver’s seat as @thedavidshaw and I cruised around the country on @therevivalists tour. For this project, it was now my turn to ride shotgun as he took the wheel and shifted gears on bringing yet another set of creative ideas to their full form. From that vantage point my opinion has only grown stronger that the ability to write, record and perform great songs is a rare and difficult skill to not only achieve but also maintain. David and his bandmates are so gifted and adept at all the above that we now have the opportunity to grab hold of all of their numerous sparks and see how far we can take them each time. Today that gives us the two new songs “Shaken” and “Promised Land” that serve as his debut singles, as well as a badass music video directed by @hc_kevin_ of @hometowncrewatl that David and I co-wrote and executive produced. I started in this business just wanting to archive the history of artists. I never thought I’d be trusted with the chance to help them make it. There is really nothing I love doing more, and doing it alongside our incredible @c3mgmt / @c3records team of Charlie Walker, @johnmorganyoung, @drewneedssleep, @whoisrussell, @hiitsmejoeg, @daguvnah and @thesarashah is a waking dream. Is your friendship and professional relationship hard to balance? A: It’s seamless. It’s the beauty about working with friends. I mean, I know now why people like to work together. It’s because you don’t have to go through that formality, that dance of introductions, the this-and-that. There’s a familiarity. We’re old buddies and so in the limited time that we have together; there’s a comfort factor. Plus, he’s funny. He’s funny off the set or on the set. He can’t help himself.
