For #mentalhealthawarenessweek, @boysbygirls invited me to discuss my experience with mental health issues, having suffered with emotionally unstable personality disorder (EUPD/BPD), self-harm addiction and substance misuse for the best part of 10 years - link in bio. Generally, EUPD manifests in response to trauma in childhood or adolescence, prompting sufferers to adopt irrational cognitive patterns and destructive coping mechanisms as means to regain a sense of control and agency of extreme shifts in emotions. A vast degree of heterogeneity exists between those diagnosed with EUPD, possibly attributed to the 200 different variations in which the disorder can be diagnosed, and the fact most patients present with comorbidities such as depression and drug-induced psychosis [in my case]. Subsequently, EUPD is largely misunderstood by society, sufferers and clinicians alike – directly implicating patient access to the correct forms of treatment required to meet each individual’s needs. Similarly, the biological basis of EUPD has yet to be defined or determined, thus no specific medications are formally recommended for the treatment EUPD, rather various medications are prescribed for symptom management but are seldom effective first-time, or at all. EUPD is a chronic disorder, but manageable. In December, I came off mood stabilisers and antipsychotics for the first time in 6 years; motivating me to re-evaluate the extent of my true capability and defy the internalised reliance I had on medication. Then COVID-19 came along, and it became apparent that I, like many others, was not prepared to deal with such a dramatic shift in my sense of normality, so I reluctantly went back on quetiapine and have 0 regrets in doing so - stigma around medication and mental health as a whole has fatal consequences. I’ll end this in 3 points: Progress is not linear, there is no set trajectory in recovery, and relapse is not always synonymous with regression.
