Viele Menschen engagieren sich in der #Kirche, obwohl sie keine Mitglieder sind. Das ist eine Chance, die wir viel mehr nutzen sollten. Vor Ausbruch der #Pandemie saß ich sonntags mit mindestens 400 Menschen im #Gottesdienst im Berliner Dom. Jetzt sind es etwa 50. Kommen die anderen zurück, wenn wir wieder unbeschwert feiern können? Oder gefallen ihnen die Fernseh- und Onlinegottesdienste, die in den vergangenen Monaten entwickelt wurden, so gut, dass sie auch künftig lieber von zu Hause aus mitfeiern? Auch ich habe diese Formate schätzen gelernt und wünsche mir, dass die neue Vielfalt geistlichen Lebens bestehen bleibt. Vielleicht haben etliche auch gemerkt, dass ihnen der sonntägliche Gottesdienst gar nicht fehlt? Wird #Gott in der Welt nach #Corona noch weniger gefragt sein als bisher? 2019 haben 270 000 Menschen der evangelischen Kirche den Rücken gekehrt, fast so viele, wie #Wiesbaden Einwohner hat. Andererseits engagieren sich viele in kirchlichen Projekten, die noch nie Mitglied in der Kirche waren oder ausgetreten sind. Sie machen in den Jugendkirchen mit, unterstützen Geflüchtete, organisieren Tafeln und begleiten Ältere und Kranke in der Nachbarschaft, weil ihnen diese Arbeit sinnvoll erscheint und Spaß macht. Andere besuchen zwar nie einen Gottesdienst, singen aber im #Kirchenchor, weil sie die Lieder und klassischen Oratorien lieben. Yousuf Karsh (1908-2002) // was an American-Canadian photographer known for his portraits of notable individuals. He has been described as one of the greatest portrait photographers of the 20th century. An Armenian Genocide survivor, Karsh migrated to Canada as a refugee. By the 1930s he established himself as a significant photographer in Ottawa, where he lived most of his adult life, though he traveled extensively for work. His iconic 1941 photograph of Winston Churchill was a breakthrough point in his 60-year career, through which he took numerous photos of known political leaders, men and women of arts and sciences. Over 20 photos by Karsh appeared on the cover of Life magazine, until he retired in 1992. His 1941 photo of Winston Churchill, the British Prime Minister, brought him prominence. The photo was taken on December 30, 1941 in the chamber of the Speaker of the House of Commons in the Canadian Parliament in Ottawa after Churchill delivered a speech on World War II to the Canadian members of the parliament. It was arranged by Canadian Prime Minister Mackenzie King. Churchill is particularly noted for his posture and facial expression, which have been compared to the wartime feelings that prevailed in the UK: persistence in the face of an all-conquering enemy. The photo session was short and, just before exposure, Karsh moved towards Churchill and removed the cigar which he had in his hand. Dont cry like a girl, be a man. Before you begin to read this, recall the last time you saw your father, brother or even male friends cry. Youll probably say when and why they cried to the exact moment, as you would have only witnessed rare moments of them crying or rather expressing their emotions. But have you ever wondered why? The answer is US; we the society who ask men not to cry and simultaneously wonder about male suicide. Yeah, pretty strange ! . Even today there is a double whammy when it comes to men and expressing emotions. The so called Strong Men find it particularly difficult to speak about their mental health. Ironic? So, the question is why do men keep quiet? Why cant they speak freely about their mental health? There seems to be a gender paradox when it comes to man and emotions. Not only do they struggle with the associated stigma, but men are also wired to believe that they cant show emotions. . Men raised in a system that promotes traditional mascularity, have complicated feelings towards emotions. The culprit is the stereotypes about what it means to be a man, the macho thing. Boys are still brought up to adhere to what society views as manly - men dont show emotions; only anger or frustration, men are stoic; they just get on with it. . Well, its high time we realize that men have been alienated from their right to feel. Its not unmanly to struggle. Next time, you notice your family or friends disturbed, take a moment to step out and listen to them, not to advice but to remind them that its perfectly okay to express their emotions. From beginnings in Scotland’s fabric mills to polo grounds in the UK, John E. Brooks ultimately brought the OCBD to the international market. In the early 1900’s, however, the iconic button down was still limited in styling; formal suiting was perhaps the only place you’d see an Oxford. Then, along came John F. Kennedy. . Possibly the most notable wearer of the OCBD, Kennedy explored the idea that button downs can be dressed up or dressed down. From White House meetings to New England sailboat tours,JFK was often spotted with his trusty Oxford. But the Oxford shirt earned this versatility. The relaxed nature of the fabric and unstructured collar gives the OCBD an inherently more casual appearance than its starched counterparts. However, correlation to a history of formalwear gives the Oxford enough authority to wear even with a five-piece suit. . JFK’s sartorial influence was ultimately appropriated by Ivy League students in the 1960’s. Students paired their Oxfords with shorts, boat shoes, casual sweaters, and more, echoing Kennedy’s informal take on the shirt. The paradigm of the formal button down thus began to shift, and we’ve never looked back. . The great “de-formalizing” of the Oxford proved that the shirt is perhaps the most versatile piece in any wardrobe. We look at Ivy League’s appropriation of the OCBD less as a stylistic trajectory, but rather as a case study of the shirt’s versatility. Since its departure from formality, the OCBD has been worn in business casual, vacation-wear, and even in streetwear. It’s now difficult to say what genre the Oxford belongs to because it simply transcends style. But after such a long sartorial history, perhaps that was inevitable. After all, the OCBD isn’t the most iconic button down shirt for no good reason.
