Trader Joe’s does not have its own dairy cows, produce farm, and pasta manufacturing plant. Costco does not make yogurt. Kroger does not have an egg facility. Thanks to the proliferation of grocery store brands, such misconceptions aren’t entirely obvious. At a minimum, these products, also known as private label brands, imply a stamp of approval packaged with an enticingly low price. But private labels lack transparency, especially when the product is certified organic. Where do these store brand products come from? Typically, chain stores buy products wholesale at the lowest available market price and package them with their own branded labels. Because the chain store buys the cheapest products available at any given moment, a single store brand could come from numerous sources over time. National chain stores may source their organic dairy from one company in the Northeast for stores in that region, another in the Southeast, and another in the Midwest. This variability in product sourcing makes it difficult, sometimes impossible, for consumers to determine where and how the milk was produced. Store brand organic milk may come from highly rated producers or from factory dairies. Cornucopia generally recommends caution in buying store brands, but the exceptions prove the rule. PCC Community Markets, for example, sells store brand organic milk supplied exclusively from one highly rated dairy cooperative. And Natural Grocers sells store brand organic eggs supplied exclusively from one highly rated egg producer. Their prices are most often higher than other brand names on their shelves. PCC Community Markets and Natural Grocers offer trusted store brands that meet their in-house requirements for sustainability and transparency. Invested consumers can contact their local stores to confirm who is supplying their private-label organic food. But that answer is just a snapshot in time—one that may not be accurate. Suppliers often change without warning and store personnel may lack the most updated information. Still, consumer questions and requests help inform department managers and encourage transparency. End of an era. Opened in 1965 built on the site of a bomb damaged estate (The Elephant was the centre of the target zone for the German air raids on London on 10 May 1941). It blazed a trail as the first covered shopping mall in Europe. In recent years it’s been home to a host of Latin American businesses (and the best place to get my fave treat - Dulce de Leche). Bay Area you amaze me! I didn’t get to post and print a single poster (👆🏼) and barely had any vendor highlights. It was just a trailer video and a list on the website. Yet over 15K attended the night market- doubling attendance from last year. We deeply apologize for turning away many people on Friday due to capacity limits. But we had to keep it safe. Thank you for your continued support! I just want to thank the many people who jumped in and took on any position to make things smoother and even checked up on me with water and food. To the Castro Valley High School Key Club volunteers, I know everything we went over at orientation got thrown out the door and you got put into the lion’s den when you had to tell all the hangry people that box office was closed or sales are being suspended for an hour. Thank you for taking that on. To the individual volunteers who replied to the volunteer requests thank you for taking on new, multiple positions and even positions created on the spot to make operations run better. To the staff of Lucky 415 thank you for the professionalism under the most stressful conditions. To EMT Justin, @setch_ftw thank you for asking how you can help (stamping in attendees) after you ran out of bandaids. To the private security and mall security thank you for handling and maintaining the thousands of people. To Iman, @bayfood, we still haven’t met in person, but thank you for all of the vendor coverage before, during and post event. To Lanisha, @photos_by_lani thank you for the all of the vendor posts and the amazing pictures of Firelight Society. Even when you wanted to rest your feet you were up at the entrance checking in people. I truly appreciate you going to Home Depot to buy caution tape and sealing off areas where we thought attendees wouldn’t event go through. Thank you, thank you!
