Pinto abalone (Haliotis kamtschatkanais) is the widest ranging abalone species in North America, occurring along the west coast from Alaska to Central Baja California, Mexico. This species has high economic, ecological, and cultural importance, and concern over declines in its abundance have led to its addition to the National Marine Fisheries Service “species of concern” list. A recent paper published by Melissa Neuman and colleagues in the October 2018 issue of the Journal of Shellfish Research provides the most current status review of pinto abalone populations along the west coast of North America and assesses the future risks for this important and wide-ranging marine invertebrate. Two entrants in our Left Behind challenge submitted photos of these beautiful spiral shells - well, theres more to these shells than meets the eye...... Many beachcombers find these shells washed up on the shore, but did you know they are the internal shell of the tiny 7cm long Rams Horn Squid (Spirula spirula)? Unfortunately, you probably wont ever see a live specimen, as it is a deep-sea creature: During the day the squid rests, head down, at around 550-1000m depth, with the multi-chambered shell helping control its buoyancy. At night, it rises to feed at around 100-300m. The shell is extremely light and durable, so when the squid dies, the shell floats to the surface and is blown ashore, staying relatively intact. It is also known as the Tail-light Squid because the live animal has a light-emitting organ in its butt 😱 So next time you see a Rams Horn Squid shell on the beach remember, the world is an amazing place and there is still lots to be discovered! Been feeling a little stuck lately... ha, get it? Because this sea star is stuck to the side of the tank? ... Nevermind 😂⁣ ⁣ There are around 2,000 species of sea star globally, and of those the most common are the five hand variety, however some species have up to forty hands! ⁣ ⁣ At present there is only one recorded Australian species of sea star that is endangered, and that is the Derwent River Sea Star (not pictured). On a global scale many more are endangered, however it is often difficult to record populations and population trends. ⁣ ⁣ We often forget about the little guys and the underdogs when we talk about #endangeredspecies ⁣ This photo pictures the underside of a sea star (I have no idea which species) that I photographed in a Sydney aquarium a few years ago. These unique critters can live to be 35 in captivity so hopefully one day I will visit it again! ⁣ ⁣ Sea stars are carnivorous and in this photo you can see their tiny, suction-cup feet which they use to pry open things like clams and oysters. Some species can also regenerate a whole new sea star from a single limb!⁣ ⁣ The Sea Star is an echinoderm, not a fish, and is more closely related to sand dollars and sea urchins. - Sea stars are able to regenerate limbs, and in some cases, entire bodies. Some require the central body to be intact to regenerate, but a few species can grow an entirely new sea star just from a portion of a severed limb. They have no brains and no blood.

GREAT STORY on making a difference... . “Once there was a wise man who used to go to the ocean to do his writing. He had a habit of walking on the beach before he began his work. . One day, as he was walking along the shore, he looked down the beach and saw a human figure moving like a dancer. He smiled to himself at the thought of someone who would dance to the day, and so, he walked faster to catch up. . As he got closer, he noticed that the figure was that of a young man, and that what he was doing was not dancing at all. The young man was reaching down to the shore, picking up small objects, and throwing them into the ocean. . He came closer still and called out Good morning! We have a very dazzling snail for today’s shellfish of the day - it’s the Jewelled Topsnail! (Calliostoma annulatum). This snail is found in kelp forests off the U.S. and Canadian pacific open coast. If you were to observe kelp, you’ll see a few species of topsnails inhibiting upper, central, and lower portions of the kelp stipe, the Jewelled Topsnail’s habitat niche is in the mid-stipe region. Here, they feed off the kelp and a variety of algae, hydroids and bryozoans. Although typically a sessile species, they are relatively quick (for a snail) as they can move 20-30 feet a day up and down their kelp stalk.
